Choose a recycling bin only after checking your local collection provider’s rules. Then match the bin’s compartments, size, opening, labels and location to those rules and the way your household sorts waste. Start with your local recycling rules
Accepted materials vary by community, even between neighboring towns. A plastic resin code on packaging does not guarantee that your program accepts it, and glass collection also differs by location. Before shopping, check the provider’s current accepted-material list and find out whether it supplies a curbside cart or requires a particular container, size, lid or placement. Ask whether accepted items are collected together or must be separated.

Choose a bin arrangement that matches collection
Single-stream collection
If your provider accepts the listed materials together, one main container may be all you need. Use the provider’s instructions to decide which materials belong in it.

Multi-stream collection
If the provider requires separation, use separate bins or compartments for the categories it specifies. Avoid adding sorting categories simply because another community uses them; the local system determines what separation is useful.
Size the bin for your space and pickup routine
There is no established universal household capacity formula. Think about how much recyclable material you accumulate between collections, how often pickup occurs, and where the bin will sit. Check the container’s dimensions as well as its stated capacity, and consider whether you can carry, empty and clean it easily.

Limited storage and infrequent collection can pull in opposite directions: a larger container holds more between pickups but takes up more room. If your provider supplies a cart, follow its requirements rather than buying a replacement based on a general size rule.

Make it easy to recognize and use
Choose a container that looks different from your trash can. Label it with clear, readable words and pictures showing the materials your provider accepts. If you use more than one bin, make each label correspond to the required collection stream.

The EPA’s venue recycling guide describes shaped openings that admit intended items and sloped lids as possible design approaches. These are optional ways to discourage incorrect disposal, not household requirements; a specialized lid is unnecessary if it makes the bin impractical.
Place the bin where recyclables are generated
A small indoor collection point near where your household handles packages, mail, bottles or cans can make sorting convenient. If your provider uses a larger outdoor cart, treat the indoor bin as a temporary collection point and empty it into the cart as needed.

EPA program guidance recommends convenient locations near where recyclables are generated and placing recycling near trash. The venue guide and EPA recycling program setup guidance address program planning rather than tested household behavior, so use proximity as a practical placement principle, not a guarantee of results.

EPA lists common curbside recyclables such as cardboard, paper, food boxes, mail, beverage and food cans, glass bottles and jars, jugs, and plastic bottles and caps. Confirm each item against your provider’s current instructions before putting it in the bin.

Plastic bags and wraps, electronics and textiles generally do not belong in curbside bins according to EPA’s recycling FAQ, though local services may differ. Plastic film may have a separate collection route. Batteries and household hazardous waste need special handling or designated collection; do not casually put them in a recycling bin or regular trash. Check local guidance for drop-off or other approved options.
Keep accepted materials clean and dry. EPA says plastic, metal and glass should generally be empty and rinsed of food debris, while paper should be empty, clean and dry. Follow your provider’s instructions where they specify different preparation steps.
