There is no single correct PSI for every car or bicycle. For a car, use the vehicle’s recommended cold pressure on its tire-and-loading placard or in the owner’s manual—not the tire’s sidewall maximum. For a bicycle, stay within both the tire’s and rim’s pressure limits, then choose a setting that suits the rider-and-luggage load, tire width, and riding conditions.

What PSI should my car tires be?

Use the cold-pressure value specified by the vehicle manufacturer. Find it on the tire-and-loading placard, commonly on the driver-side door edge or pillar, or in the owner’s manual. Follow separate front, rear, and spare-tire values if the vehicle lists them. The correct pressure is vehicle-specific, not a universal number.

NHTSA defines a tire as cold when the vehicle has not been driven for at least three hours. Check pressure under that condition whenever possible. If you have to add air after driving, use the placard value and recheck once the tires are cold.

How to check and adjust car tire pressure

  1. Locate the vehicle’s tire-and-loading placard or owner’s manual and note the prescribed pressure for each tire position.
  2. After the car has been parked for at least three hours, remove the valve cap and measure each tire with a pressure gauge.
  3. If a tire is below its listed cold pressure, add air. If it is above the listed pressure, release air gradually. Measure again and replace the valve cap.
  4. Check the spare as well if it has a listed specification.

NHTSA recommends checking all tires, including the spare, at least monthly. A tire-pressure monitoring system is not a substitute for manual checks: it warns when pressure is significantly low, rather than confirming that every tire is at its recommended setting.

AstroAI Digital Tire Pressure Gauge 150PSI, ±1PSI Accuracy for Car Truck | Industrial Tire Gauge Calibrated to ANSI B40.7 with 4 Settings for Motorcycle Bikes, Silver
  • Accurate, Dependable Readings: Factory‑calibrated to ±1 PSI, so you can confidently match your vehicle’s recommended PSI (check the door jamb sticker). Ideal for monthly checks and road trips — consistent results every time, cold or warm.
  • Bright Backlit Display & Nozzle Light: The illuminated nozzle helps you find the valve stem in the dark, while the backlit LCD makes readings crystal clear in dim garages or at night. No more squinting or holding a flashlight.
  • 4 Measurement Units, One Button: Quickly switch among PSI, Bar, Kgf/cm², and KPA with a single press. No complex settings — just press and cycle to your preferred unit. Perfect for drivers who need multiple scales.
  • Broad Compatibility for Everyday Vehicles: 0–150 PSI covers cars, SUVs, motorcycles, and spare tires (often 60 PSI). Fits standard Schrader valves; just press on for a reading.
  • Auto‑Off to Extend Battery Life: The gauge automatically powers down after 30 seconds of inactivity, so the included 2*AAA batteries last longer. Always ready for your monthly checks without surprise dead batteries.

Do I inflate car tires to the PSI on the tire?

No. The number on a tire’s sidewall is its maximum permissible pressure, not the vehicle-specific recommended setting. Use the cold pressure on the car’s placard or in its manual instead. NHTSA explains the distinction in its tire guidance.

What PSI should bicycle tires be?

Bicycle tires do not have one pressure that suits every bike. Start with the pressure range printed on the tire, then check the wheel or rim maker’s pressure limits—especially for tubeless and hookless setups. Never exceed either maximum; if the tire and rim limits differ, use the lower limit.

Within those limits, pressure is a setup choice. The most useful setting depends on tire width and construction, total rider-and-luggage load, the surface, and the balance you want among comfort, grip, and rolling resistance. Schwalbe says a general pressure recommendation cannot be made for a particular bicycle or tire.

How to choose and check bicycle tire pressure

  1. Read the pressure range on the tire sidewall and consult the rim or wheel manufacturer’s limits.
  2. Account for total load, including the rider and luggage. In general, a narrower tire or heavier system load calls for more pressure than a wider tire under a lighter load.
  3. Choose a setting within the permitted limits for the terrain and your preferences. Higher pressure can favor lower rolling resistance on smooth roads; lower pressure can improve comfort and grip over bumps. These are broad tendencies, not guarantees for every tire or riding condition.
  4. Measure with a pressure gauge on a pump or a separate gauge. Do not rely on squeezing the tire with your thumb; Schwalbe cautions that this is inaccurate.

Manufacturers give different check-frequency advice: Schwalbe recommends checking bicycle pressure at least monthly, while Continental recommends checking before every ride. Temperature also affects pressure. Continental advises accounting for temperature differences between where a tire is checked and where it will be ridden or stored.

What to use for an accurate pressure check

A pressure gauge lets you compare a measured value with the right reference: the vehicle’s cold-pressure placard for a car, or the tire and rim limits for a bicycle. NHTSA recommends keeping a gauge in the car; Schwalbe suggests a floor pump with a gauge for cyclists who ride regularly. A gauge-equipped bicycle pump or a separate gauge can make routine checks straightforward.
