How to Choose the Right Power Supply for a Gaming PC with an RX 9060 XT

Start with AMD’s 450 W minimum PSU recommendation for either reference RX 9060 XT, and confirm the power supply has a PCIe 8-pin lead. Treat 450 W as a baseline for the graphics card configuration—not proof that a particular PSU is sufficient for every gaming PC. Your CPU, the exact graphics-card model, and the rest of the system determine the final choice.

What PSU does an RX 9060 XT need?

AMD lists the same minimum PSU recommendation and power connector for its reference specifications for both memory versions:

AMD reference card Typical board power Minimum PSU recommendation Additional power connector
Radeon RX 9060 XT 16 GB 160 W 450 W One 8-pin
Radeon RX 9060 XT 8 GB 150 W 450 W One 8-pin

These are AMD’s published reference specifications, not a measurement of total PC power use. The card’s typical board power is not the wattage your complete system needs from its PSU. See AMD’s RX 9060 XT 16 GB specifications and RX 9060 XT 8 GB specifications.

Is a 450 W power supply enough?

It may be enough for a particular system, but the GPU specification alone cannot establish that. AMD’s 450 W figure is a manufacturer recommendation for the reference GPU configuration; it does not account for every possible CPU and collection of other components. Check the exact graphics card’s manufacturer recommendation and assess the full parts list before choosing a PSU.

How to choose a PSU for your build

  1. Identify the exact graphics card. Check its manufacturer’s product page and manual. A partner model may have its own power guidance, so do not assume the reference specification covers every card sold as an RX 9060 XT.
  2. Check the whole build. Include the CPU and all other system components when deciding whether the PSU’s rated wattage is suitable. The GPU’s typical board power is not total system draw.
  3. Verify the power lead. Make sure the PSU provides a compatible PCIe 8-pin lead for the graphics card, and confirm the connection requirements in that card’s manual.
  4. Confirm physical fit. Check that the PSU’s form factor fits your case and that its cables can reach the required connections.
  5. Compare the remaining trade-offs. Once capacity and fit are appropriate, compare current price, warranty, noise, and efficiency using manufacturer documentation and current listings.

Should you buy a 550 W PSU?

A 550 W unit can be a practical shopping target to compare, but AMD does not state 550 W as the RX 9060 XT requirement, and that capacity is not a universal recommendation for every build. Judge a candidate against the exact card maker’s guidance and the complete system configuration. Do not select it by wattage alone: it also needs the required PCIe 8-pin lead and must fit the case.
