Use an Oura Ring Gen3 sizing kit before ordering. Gen3 uses its own sizing, whole sizes only, and does not reliably match a conventional US ring chart or a Gen4/Gen5 kit. Try the sizers on several fingers and both hands, wear the leading candidate for at least 24 hours including sleep, and choose the smallest size that remains snug and comfortable. If you are between sizes, Oura recommends the smaller one for steadier sensor contact.
For the finished ring, place a Gen3 Horizon dimple toward your palm. Place a Gen3 Heritage with its flat side facing up.

The short answer: buy the Gen3 kit, then test the fit for a full day
The most dependable way to select an Oura Ring 3 size is physical testing with a sizing kit made specifically for Gen3. The plastic sizers reproduce the ring’s inner profile and sensor-bump position closely enough to reveal problems that a chart or an online calculator cannot: a loose base, a gap when you make a fist, pressure at the knuckle, or sensor contact that disappears when your hand moves.
Recommended Free Tools
Oura’s sizing guidance is deliberately conservative. A ring should pass over the knuckle, sit securely at the base, and feel comfortable through ordinary activity and sleep. It should not spin freely, leave a visible gap above the finger, or cause pain. Because finger dimensions change with temperature, activity and overnight fluid retention, a quick five-minute try-on is not enough.

Why Gen3 sizing is different from a normal ring chart
Oura states that each generation has different sizing. The Gen3 ring therefore should not be ordered by assuming that a standard US whole size, a familiar jewelry-ring measurement, or a size from another Oura generation will match. The ring’s inner contour, sensor placement and available size increments all affect how a number feels on your finger.
Gen3 uses whole sizes; half sizes are not available. That makes the physical fit test especially important when your finger falls between conventional sizes. A chart can suggest a circumference, but it cannot show whether the ring will maintain contact with the three infrared sensors while your finger bends or swells.
Oura’s current online sizing guide lists ranges for Oura Ring 4 and Oura Ring 5, but it does not publish a Gen3 range on that page. Do not infer a Gen3 choice from those newer ranges. A Gen4 or Gen5 sizing kit is evidence for those generations, not a substitute for a Gen3 kit.
Get the correct sizing kit before you order
The kit is the central tool for this purchase. Check the packaging or product description for an explicit “Gen3” designation before paying or entering an order. A listing that only says “Oura sizing kit” is ambiguous because the generations use different sizing.
Oura’s current guidance says its online store does not sell individual sizing kits. Authorized retailers may sell kits separately and may sometimes provide a purchase credit. Credit rules, stock and eligibility vary by retailer, so confirm those terms at checkout rather than assuming that a kit purchase will automatically reduce the ring price.
Do not use a paper strip, a generic ring mandrel or a sizing kit intended for another generation as your final authority. Those tools may help you estimate a starting point, but they cannot validate Gen3 sensor contact or model orientation.
Prepare your hands for a useful test
Before trying a sizer, remove other rings from the test finger and wash away lotion or oil that could make plastic slide. Oura notes that fingers are smallest when hands are cold. Allow cold hands to return to a normal, comfortable temperature before deciding; otherwise you risk choosing a size that becomes restrictive as your fingers warm.

Test at a normal time of day rather than immediately after intense exercise, a hot shower or prolonged heat exposure. Those conditions can temporarily change finger volume. You do not need to force your hand into a particular state; the goal is to observe the fit across ordinary conditions during the 24-hour trial.
Step 1: Try multiple fingers on both hands
Oura permits any finger, but recommends the index finger for the best accuracy. The middle and ring fingers are also suitable. Try each of those options on the left and right hands because finger dimensions and daily swelling can differ from one hand to the other.
Slide each candidate sizer over the fingertip and knuckle without forcing it. A suitable size passes the knuckle with steady pressure and then settles at the base without wobbling. Avoid a finger whose knuckle is much wider than its base: the ring may be difficult to remove even when the base fit is loose, leading you to compromise between security and comfort.
Use the finger you can realistically wear every day. If an index-finger fit is comfortable and stable, it is Oura’s preferred position for signal quality. If your index knuckle or work routine makes that impractical, evaluate the middle or ring finger using the same contact and overnight tests rather than assuming a different finger needs a different standard.

Step 2: Check the knuckle, base and movement
A sizer should require gentle, even pressure to cross the knuckle. Once it is on, it should rest at the finger base instead of stopping halfway up the finger. Move your hand through normal gestures, type, grip an object and flex the finger.
- Too loose: the sizer spins freely, slides toward the fingertip, or loses contact with the palm-side skin when you bend your finger.
- Too tight: it causes pain, numbness, throbbing or discoloration; cannot be removed without twisting excessively or using soap; or cannot turn at all when you need to reposition it.
- Potentially correct: it stays in place, can be removed with deliberate but ordinary pressure, and does not distract you during movement.
Do not judge by whether the ring turns easily. A small amount of rotation can be normal, while free spinning usually means the sensor bumps will not remain aligned with the skin.
Step 3: Verify the three sensor bumps and the fist test
Look inside the plastic sizer. The three raised bumps represent the Gen3 infrared sensors. They should sit snugly against the palm-side skin, without a visible gap. This contact is more important than matching a number printed on another ring.

Make a relaxed fist while watching the top of the finger. A visible gap between the sizer and your skin indicates that the size is too large; try the next smaller size. Open and close your hand several times. The bumps should remain against the skin rather than lifting away or shifting to the side.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repeat the check after the sizer has been on for several minutes. A fit that looks secure immediately but loosens as your hand warms is not a reliable fit. Conversely, a sizer that leaves deep pressure marks or produces discomfort should not be kept merely to preserve contact.
Step 4: Sleep in the candidate for at least 24 hours
Oura’s General FAQs, updated September 18, 2026, advise wearing the sizing ring for at least 24 hours, including while sleeping, before finalizing a size. The overnight period matters because finger dimensions vary over the day and night. A size that feels ideal in the afternoon can feel restrictive after sleep, while a borderline loose size may reveal gaps when your hand is cool.
Keep the sizer on during normal work, meals, exercise that is safe with the plastic piece, hand washing and bedtime. Notice whether it catches on clothing, interferes with gripping, or becomes difficult to remove. Check sensor contact again in the morning and after periods when your hands feel warmer or more swollen.
If you remove the sizer during the trial, note the time and reason. Restarting the 24-hour period gives you a cleaner comparison, particularly if you have not yet experienced sleep-related swelling.
What to do when you are between sizes
Gen3 does not offer half sizes, so some buyers will have a close call between two whole sizes. Oura recommends the smaller size when both appear workable because close contact supports consistent sensor readings. Apply that recommendation only if the smaller sizer remains comfortable, passes over the knuckle and can be removed without pain or excessive twisting.
Plastic sizers can feel stickier than the finished ring. Do not reject a smaller candidate solely because the plastic drags slightly during removal. Instead, distinguish friction from harmful pressure: mild material drag can be acceptable, whereas pain, numbness, discoloration or an inability to remove the sizer is not.

If the smaller option fails the overnight comfort test, use the larger size and reassess the finger. A different finger may provide a stable base without requiring you to tolerate pressure at a wide knuckle.
Choose the finger using accuracy and daily comfort
| Finger option | What Oura says | What to verify during your trial |
|---|---|---|
| Index | Recommended for best accuracy | Stable base fit, unobstructed use of your hand, and sensor bumps touching skin through movement and sleep |
| Middle | Suitable alternative | Comfort at the knuckle and no conflict with neighboring rings or work tasks |
| Ring | Suitable alternative | Secure contact without trapping the finger against another ring |
| Other finger | Oura allows any finger | Use the same 24-hour contact and comfort standards; accuracy may depend on the chosen placement |
There is no requirement to wear the ring on the same hand as a watch or phone. Select the hand and finger that keep the ring secure and allow you to wear it consistently. Consistency is more useful than a theoretically ideal location that you remove frequently.

Gen3 has two designs with different visual alignment instructions. On Gen3 Horizon, the dimple belongs on the palm side of the finger. On Gen3 Heritage, the flat side faces up. Confirm the model before putting on the finished ring, because applying the Horizon instruction to Heritage reverses the intended orientation.
The orientation does not replace the fit checks. Even when the ring is positioned correctly, a loose fit can let the sensor bumps drift away from the skin. Recheck contact after putting on the finished ring, especially if you selected a different finger from the one used during early testing.
Gen3 versus newer kits: what can and cannot transfer
| Choice | Generation compatibility | Useful for a Gen3 purchase? | Reason |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gen3-specific sizing kit | Gen3 | Yes | Matches the generation’s sizing and internal sensor profile |
| Gen4 sizing kit | Gen4 | No | Oura says generations use different sizing |
| Gen5 sizing kit | Gen5 | No | Newer-generation dimensions are not a Gen3 measurement |
| Standard US ring chart | Conventional jewelry sizing | Not sufficient | Cannot confirm Gen3 sensor contact, rotation or overnight comfort |
| Generic paper or plastic gauge | Not stated | Only a rough estimate | Does not reproduce the Gen3 interior bumps and profile |
Oura’s current guide, updated October 7, 2026, publishes size ranges for Oura Ring 4 and 5 but not for Gen3. That omission is a reason to test the physical Gen3 sizers, not a reason to map a Gen3 finger measurement onto a newer chart.

Symptoms and fixes if the fit seems wrong
The ring spins or loses contact
Try the smaller sizer on the same finger and repeat the fist test. If the smaller size is painful or cannot pass the knuckle, test another finger rather than forcing the fit. Free spinning is a stronger warning than a slight ability to rotate.
You see a gap when making a fist
A gap at the top of the finger means the candidate is too large according to Oura’s sizing guidance. Move down one whole size and repeat the contact check. If the smaller size causes pressure, move to another finger and restart the overnight test.
The sizer is painful or will not come off
Remove it safely with ordinary methods; do not keep wearing a painful ring to complete the trial. Swelling, numbness or color change indicates excessive tightness. After your finger returns to normal, test a larger size or another finger.
The fit changes between morning and evening
That variation is precisely why the full-day test is required. Compare both sizes across waking and sleeping conditions. Choose the candidate that maintains contact without becoming painful at the largest normal finger size you observe.
The plastic feels tackier than expected
Oura notes that plastic sizers can feel stickier than the finished ring. Judge the underlying pressure and contact rather than expecting identical surface glide. A sticky sensation alone is not proof that the size is wrong.
Common mistakes that produce a bad Gen3 size
- Ordering directly from a conventional ring-size number without a Gen3 sizer.
- Using a Gen4 or Gen5 kit because it is easier to find.
- Testing only one finger or one hand.
- Making the decision with cold hands, immediately after heat or right after exercise.
- Wearing a sizer for only a few minutes and skipping sleep.
- Choosing the larger size solely because it slides over the knuckle more easily.
- Choosing the smaller size when it causes pain, numbness or removal problems.
- Ignoring the sensor bumps and judging only by appearance.
- Putting a Horizon ring on with the dimple facing up or a Heritage ring with the flat side toward the palm.
- Discarding the kit before checking the delivered ring and before the retailer’s exchange period ends.
A practical decision framework
Use this sequence when two options remain after the first try:
- Discard any size that causes pain, numbness, discoloration or unsafe removal.
- Discard any size that spins freely, leaves a gap during the fist test or repeatedly loses sensor contact.
- Of the remaining candidates, compare the finger that Oura recommends first—the index—with the middle and ring fingers.
- Wear the best candidate for a complete 24-hour cycle including sleep.
- If two sizes still pass, select the smaller whole size, provided it remains comfortable at your warmest and most swollen normal condition.
- Record the model orientation before placing the order.
This method prioritizes reliable sensor contact while preserving everyday comfort. It also separates a generation mismatch from a finger-specific problem: if every size feels wrong on one finger, the finger—not the entire Gen3 range—may be the issue.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhen a return or exchange is the safer choice
Contact the seller about an exchange if the delivered ring does not match the tested size, if the model is not the one ordered, or if the ring fails the same contact and comfort checks after normal acclimation. Keep the original packaging and sizing kit until you are satisfied, and follow the seller’s stated window and condition requirements.
Do not attempt to solve a poor fit by wearing the ring upside down or by adding an improvised spacer. Those changes can move the sensors away from the skin and defeat the purpose of the sizing process. Re-test the next whole size or another finger with the proper Gen3 sizer instead.
The final pre-purchase check
Before submitting the order, you should be able to answer “yes” to each applicable question:
- Is the kit explicitly for Oura Ring Gen3?
- Did you test more than one finger and both hands?
- Did you warm cold hands before judging?
- Does the sizer pass the knuckle but stay secure at the base?
- Do all three internal bumps remain against the palm-side skin?
- Is there no gap when you make a fist?
- Did you wear the candidate for at least 24 hours, including sleep?
- If you were between sizes, did you select the smaller comfortable whole size?
- Do you know whether your ring is Horizon or Heritage and how it should face?
Meeting those checks gives you the best available basis for ordering a Gen3 ring without relying on a newer generation’s measurements or a generic ring chart.
