Then compare the particular wrap’s fiber blend, weight, weave, care instructions and post-wash length. For any fabric, safe positioning and a secure fit matter more than a “newborn” label.
How to choose a wrap size
Start with the maker’s size chart for the exact wrap. Numbered sizes are not a universal conversion: confirm the finished length in metres or feet, and consider both the wearer’s build and the tying method. A multi-pass front carry generally uses more fabric than a shorter carry.

BabyMonkey offers size 6 as a general starting point, size 5 for shorter or slimmer wearers, and size 7 for taller or sturdier wearers. These are that manufacturer’s guideposts, not a rule for other brands; it also says a child’s age and weight are not indicators for choosing wrap length. See BabyMonkey’s size guide.
If two caregivers will share one wrap, BabyMonkey advises choosing the larger of the sizes they need. Check whether the seller gives preshrunk dimensions or a finished length after washing. Extra yardage suggested for fabric used in a do-it-yourself wrap is not a universal allowance for a finished commercial product.

Compare fabric, weight and care
Fiber content is only one part of how a wrap handles. Weave, weight, finishing and care requirements also vary, even among wraps made with the same fiber. Manufacturer descriptions can help narrow the choice, but they are not a guarantee of how a specific wrap will feel or suit a particular carry.

Check newborn positioning and the carrier instructions
A newborn’s face and airway need regular attention. Connecticut Department of Public Health guidance says the baby should be visible and the chin off the chest; NATIBABY’s manual says to keep the face uncovered and clearly visible, and prevent the chin from resting on or near the chest. - Use the wrap within the limits and tying instructions stated by its own manufacturer; do not apply another brand’s age or weight limits.
- Inspect the wrap for damage and make sure knots and adjustments are secure, as the product manual directs.
