There is no single universal mobile screenshot size. Choose the store first, then the device classes and orientation your app actually supports. For a current iPhone listing, begin with Apple’s largest required class—6.9-inch at 1320 × 2868 pixels portrait (2868 × 1320 landscape)—and let Apple scale accepted larger screenshots for smaller classes when appropriate. For Google Play phone listings, use at least 1080 × 1920 pixels portrait or 1920 × 1080 landscape, while staying within Google’s 320–3840 pixel validator range.
Start with the destination, not the phone in your hand
A screenshot for App Store Connect has different rules from one for Google Play, a help article, a social post or a presentation slide. Write down the destination before opening your design or capture tool.
- Apple App Store: organize assets by iPhone and, if supported, iPad display classes.
- Google Play: choose each supported device type—phone, tablet, Chromebook, Android TV, Wear OS, Android Automotive OS or Android XR.
- Other channels: use the target surface’s aspect ratio and display size, then verify its file and transparency rules.
Store validators check the exported file’s pixel dimensions, format and other properties; they do not infer your intended device from a file name.

| 4.7-inch | 750 × 1334 |
If you do not provide a 6.9-inch set for an iPhone app, Apple marks the 6.5-inch set as required. Apple states that accepted larger screenshots can be scaled down for smaller device sizes when those smaller sets are not supplied. Scaling saves production time, but inspect the reduced artwork: fine captions, thin lines and UI details can become difficult to read.
iPad requirements
An iPad app requires a 13-inch iPad screenshot set. Listed portrait examples are 2064 × 2752 and 2048 × 2732 pixels; use the reversed dimensions for landscape. Treat iPad screenshots as a separate composition rather than stretching an iPhone canvas: navigation, text density and feature emphasis often differ.
Apple file rules and upload count
Apple allows one to 10 screenshots per supported set. Upload JPEG, JPG or PNG files without an alpha channel or transparency. Confirm the exported color and alpha properties in your image editor or build pipeline, because a visually opaque image can still contain an alpha channel that fails validation.
Google Play screenshot sizes
General validator limits
Google Play accepts JPEG or 24-bit PNG files without alpha. The shortest dimension must be at least 320 pixels, the longest no more than 3840 pixels, and the longest dimension cannot exceed twice the shortest. These are validator boundaries, not necessarily good promotional targets.

Phone recommendations
For broad phone promotion and recommendation surfaces, Google recommends at least four app screenshots at 1080 × 1920 pixels portrait (9:16) or 1920 × 1080 pixels landscape (16:9). Games have a separate recommendation threshold of at least three screenshots. A file below these recommendation sizes may upload successfully yet receive less promotional eligibility.
Other device types
Google Play supports separate screenshot sets for 7-inch and 10-inch tablets, Chromebooks, Android TV, Wear OS, Android Automotive OS and Android XR. Select only the types your app genuinely supports. A phone image placed in a tablet set can pass a basic dimension check while presenting an inaccurate experience.
Google advises showing the actual in-app or in-game experience, keeping added text minimal, and creating localized screenshots when images contain text. Do not use marketing captions to hide a UI that users will not see after installation.
A practical sizing workflow
- Name the destination. Record App Store Connect, Google Play or another surface.
- List supported device classes. For Apple, mark iPhone, iPad or both. For Google, mark phone, tablet, Chromebook, TV, watch, car or XR.
- Choose the real orientation. Use portrait for portrait-first flows and landscape for landscape-first flows. Export both only when the app genuinely supports both or the listing requires both.
- Pick the largest accepted or recommended canvas. Use Apple’s largest required class for the supported iPhone set. For Google phone promotion, target 1080 × 1920 or 1920 × 1080.
- Capture the actual UI. Include core screens and realistic content. Avoid status-bar artifacts, emulator borders and unrelated browser chrome.
- Add restrained captions. Keep type large enough to read at listing scale. If captions are language-specific, create a localized set for each supported store language.
- Export and inspect properties. Verify exact width and height, JPEG or 24-bit PNG format, and no alpha channel.
- Preview at listing scale. Check legibility on a smaller display and confirm that important controls are not hidden by device masks or store UI.
- Upload a test set. Let the store validator identify class, orientation or file-property errors before producing every localized variant.
Choosing between one source asset and multiple sets
| Decision axis | Question to answer |
|---|---|
| Platform compliance | Does each file meet the exact store dimensions, format and alpha rules? |
| Device coverage | Will one source scale cleanly, or do iPhone, iPad, phone and tablet need separate layouts? |
| Orientation | Does the composition match the app’s real portrait or landscape experience? |
| Promotion quality | Does it meet Google’s larger recommendation thresholds and remain readable? |
| Localization | Are embedded captions translated for every supported store language? |
| Maintenance | How many source layouts must be revised when the UI changes? |
Use a single high-resolution source only when scaling preserves readable text and correct framing. Build separate artboards when an iPad layout, landscape flow or localized headline changes the visual hierarchy.

Common mistakes and fixes
“The dimensions look right, but upload is rejected”
Check the file type, bit depth and alpha channel. Google requires JPEG or 24-bit PNG without alpha; Apple also disallows transparency. Re-export as an opaque JPEG or 24-bit PNG.
“The image is accepted but looks blurry”
You may have enlarged a smaller capture. Recapture at the target pixel dimensions, rather than upscaling a 320- or 750-pixel source. Inspect text at the store’s thumbnail size.
“Apple asks for a different iPhone class”
Review the app’s supported devices and provide the required 6.9-inch set when applicable. If that set is absent, Apple can require the 6.5-inch set.
“Google accepts my phone screenshots but they are not promotional-ready”
Meet the recommendation target: at least four 1080 × 1920 portrait or 1920 × 1080 landscape screenshots for apps. Games use the separate minimum of three screenshots.

“A tablet screenshot feels like a stretched phone”
Design an iPad, tablet or Chromebook composition around its wider layout. Show additional navigation or content only when it exists in the real build.
“Localized text is unreadable or incorrect”
Generate a screenshot set per supported language when text is embedded in the image. Allow for longer translations instead of shrinking type until it becomes illegible.
Automating captures without losing control
For a handful of screens, a simulator or device capture followed by exact-dimension export is simplest. For many routes, automate navigation, wait for content and export each target canvas. Keep a manifest containing URL or screen name, device class, orientation, pixel size, locale and revision. Re-run property checks after every UI change.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its clean-shot workflow accepts cookie and consent banners like a visitor, then removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each step can be disabled. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and whether it was billed.
Use the API for web-based screenshots that feed your store-design workflow. The endpoint supports PNG, JPEG, WebP and PDF output, full-page captures with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element captures, dark mode, device presets or custom viewports, retina scale, custom CSS and JavaScript, clicks, selector or network-idle waits, request blocking, headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, chosen cache TTLs, signed image links, asynchronous webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, usage reporting and an OpenAPI specification. Familiar parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work.

Cost, reliability and maintenance notes
- Capture only the screens and device classes required by each store; every extra locale multiplies maintenance.
- Wait for fonts, lazy images and network data before capture, or your “correct” dimensions may contain incomplete content.
- Use deterministic test data so screenshots remain comparable between releases.
- Keep source layouts separate from exported files, and record the exact pixel dimensions in filenames or metadata.
- Review screenshots after store UI changes; a validator pass does not guarantee readable promotional artwork.
Final checklist
- Destination and supported device classes are documented.
- Orientation matches the real app experience.
- Apple sets use the required iPhone class and, where applicable, 13-inch iPad.
- Google phone sets meet 1080 × 1920 or 1920 × 1080 recommendations.
- Files are JPEG or 24-bit PNG with no alpha channel.
- Dimensions fall within each platform’s limits.
- Captions are minimal, legible and localized.
- Every screenshot shows genuine in-app content.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I design screenshots at CSS points or physical pixels?
Export the final files in the store’s pixel dimensions. Your design tool may use points or density-independent units internally, but the uploaded bitmap must match the required pixel width and height.
Can I submit portrait screenshots for a landscape-only game?
No. Compose screenshots in the orientation users experience and reverse the platform dimensions for landscape where the store supports that orientation.

Only when the composition remains sharp and readable. A larger canvas with tiny captions is less effective than a correctly framed image with legible UI.
The Bottom Line
Choose the store and supported device class first, then export at the largest accepted Apple class or Google’s 1080 × 1920 phone recommendation. Verify orientation, format, alpha, localization and listing-scale legibility before uploading.
