For everyday tablet use on a budget, start with the standard iPad (A16). Choose the iPad mini if a compact 8.3-inch screen matters most, the iPad Air if its larger-screen options or Pencil Pro support fit your work, and the iPad Pro only if you have a clear use for its premium display features. In Apple’s U.S. store listings observed October 7, 2026, family starting prices range from $449 to $1,199; your total will be higher if you add storage, cellular service, a keyboard, or a stylus.

Everyday use, school basics, and a tighter budget
The iPad (A16) is the sensible place to start for browsing, video, general apps, and school tasks when its screen and listed accessory support meet your needs. It has the lowest family starting price in Apple’s cited U.S. lineup. Before buying, consider how many apps and offline files you expect to keep on the device: the sources here do not establish one storage capacity that is sufficient for everyone.

Reading, travel, and small-bag portability
The iPad mini is the compact choice, with an 8.3-inch display. That smaller format can be easier to carry and hold, but gives you less screen area than the standard iPad, Air, or Pro. At a $599 starting price in Apple’s U.S. listing, it also costs more than the standard iPad despite being smaller.
Handwritten notes, drawing, or a larger workspace
Compare the Air’s 11-inch and 13-inch sizes against the space you need for notes, drawing, or multiple views. Apple lists Pencil Pro support for Air, as well as Pencil (USB-C). Pick this tier when its screen size or accessory compatibility serves a real workflow; a newer-sounding chip name alone is not a reason to pay more.

Professional creative work or display-sensitive use
The Pro is the tier to consider if you specifically value its listed Ultra Retina XDR display and ProMotion. Those features may matter for particular visual or performance-oriented workflows, but the product listings do not establish that every professional needs a Pro. Its $1,199 U.S. starting price is a substantial premium over the other families, so weigh that cost against how often the features will matter to you.

If you plan to type often, identify the keyboard compatible with your exact iPad and add its separate cost to your budget. Apple lists different Magic Keyboard variants for the standard iPad, Air, and Pro; the mini supports Bluetooth keyboards. Do not assume a keyboard will fit across generations or families without checking Apple’s compatibility information.

Budget for the complete setup, not just the iPad
The $449–$1,199 spread is the listed U.S. starting-price range for the four families, not the price of a fully equipped device. Your actual cost depends on configuration and the accessories or connectivity you choose.
- Storage: Choose capacity based on your apps, downloads, photos, and offline files. No universal storage recommendation is established by the cited product material.
- Keyboard and stylus: Add only the accessories that support how you will use the iPad, and verify compatibility for the exact model.
- Cellular: Consider it if you need the iPad to connect independently away from Wi-Fi. Apple says cellular data plans are sold separately, and compatibility and availability depend on the carrier; not all carriers support eSIM. See Apple’s cellular iPad information.
If reliable Wi-Fi is available where you use the iPad—or a phone hotspot is sufficient—Wi-Fi may meet your connectivity needs without a separate iPad data plan. Cellular is an ongoing service consideration, not just a device purchase choice.

Check the details that can change your decision
Screen size and display
Apple lists an 8.3-inch display for mini, an 11-inch-class display for the standard iPad, and 11- and 13-inch options for Air and Pro. A larger screen may suit split views, drawing, or keyboard use, while mini prioritizes compactness; these are practical implications of screen size, not measured productivity results. Apple’s comparison material lists Liquid Retina for the standard iPad, mini, and Air, and Ultra Retina XDR plus ProMotion for Pro. Whether those distinctions are worth paying for depends on your visual priorities and use.
Software features
Do not assume every current iPad supports every iPadOS feature. Apple’s iPadOS 26 “All New Features” document, dated September 2025, provides feature-specific device lists. Check the entry for the particular feature you need and the latest system requirements before buying; the document’s publication date means it should not be treated as a timeless compatibility list. See Apple’s iPadOS 26 feature document.

Battery, ports, and external displays on the standard iPad
For iPad (A16), Apple specifies “Up to 10 hours of surfing the web on Wi-Fi or watching video” and “Up to 9 hours of surfing the web using cellular data network.” Apple’s technical page says its tests used preproduction units in January and February 2025, and that battery life varies with settings, use, network, and other factors. These are Apple’s test-based maximums for this model, not independent comparative results or a promise for every iPad. See Apple’s iPad (A16) technical specifications.
That same specification page lists USB-C with charging, DisplayPort, and USB 2.0 data transfer up to 480 Mb/s, plus support for one external display up to 4K at 60 Hz. These details are specific to iPad (A16); check the technical page for any other model rather than assuming identical port or display capabilities.
Quick Recap
A practical way to make the final choice
- Set a realistic total budget. Start with the family’s U.S. starting price, then account for the storage, keyboard, stylus, and connectivity you actually need.
- Decide whether portability or workspace matters more. Choose mini for the smallest screen and device in this lineup; compare the standard iPad’s 11-inch class with Air and Pro’s 11- or 13-inch options if you want more screen area.
- Identify must-have features. If you need Pencil Pro, a particular display feature, a keyboard, or a specific iPadOS capability, verify that the exact model supports it before deciding.
- Pay for the tier that solves your problem. The standard iPad is the budget starting point; the mini, Air, and Pro make sense when their specific size, accessory, or display distinctions justify their higher starting prices for you.
- Recheck price and compatibility before purchase. Apple’s listed prices, lineup, and availability can change, and accessory fit depends on the exact model.
