Choose for climate first, then airflow: a direct evaporative cooler is most useful in dry air, but it adds moisture and needs an open route for air to leave. For a portable unit, use its stated CFM and coverage as rough guides—not a promise of a particular room temperature. Whole-home systems require a different, volume-based sizing calculation.
1. Check whether your climate suits evaporative cooling
A “desert air cooler” is a direct evaporative cooler: it pulls air through water-saturated pads, cooling the incoming air as water evaporates and adding moisture to that air. Hot, dry conditions generally suit this process better than humid ones. High humidity and high wet-bulb temperatures limit how much useful cooling evaporation can provide.

The U.S. Department of Energy describes evaporative coolers as useful in arid climates and unsuitable where humidity is high. Honeywell says its portable coolers work best at relative humidity around 60% or lower; that is manufacturer guidance, not a universal cutoff, and actual results depend on outdoor temperature and humidity. Check current local conditions when deciding whether a direct cooler makes sense for the hours you plan to use it. Direct, indirect, and combined designs
- Direct: Water-saturated pads cool and humidify the supply air. This is the common portable-room-cooler design.
- Indirect: A heat exchanger transfers cooling while keeping the supply air separate from the wet secondary air stream, so that stage does not add moisture to the supply.
- Indirect/direct: Combines the two approaches; check the product specifications to understand how its stages operate.

2. Size a portable cooler by airflow, not tank size
For a portable room cooler, start with the manufacturer’s rated airflow in cubic feet per minute (CFM) and any coverage guidance stated for that product. Coverage is a practical shopping aid, not a guaranteed room-temperature result. Heat load, humidity, room layout, and the path air takes through the space all affect comfort.
As examples—not a universal sizing formula—Honeywell suggests about 200 CFM for a 50-square-foot spot and about 2,000 CFM for an area around 500 square feet. The company cautions that heat and humidity affect results. These portable-cooler examples should not be used to size an installed whole-home system. Honeywell: Portable Evaporative Cooler FAQ

Do not judge cooling capacity by a large water tank or fan speed alone. Honeywell says tank size mainly affects how often you refill and the unit’s physical size, rather than necessarily determining cooling performance. Compare the actual CFM rating and coverage guidance for the model you are considering.
3. Size a whole-home system with a separate calculation
Installed systems are sized by conditioned air volume and a climate-dependent air-change rate—not by applying a portable cooler’s square-foot example to an entire house. The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) Building America Solution Center describes this method:

- Use regional guidance to determine the required air changes per hour (ACH). PNNL says typical manufacturer recommendations are roughly 20–40 ACH, varying with location and outdoor conditions.
- Calculate conditioned volume: floor area multiplied by average ceiling or wall height.
- Calculate airflow: (volume in cubic feet × ACH) ÷ 60 = CFM.
PNNL’s worked example is a 2,000-square-foot home with 8-foot ceilings near Salt Lake City: 16,000 cubic feet at 20 ACH requires 5,333 CFM. This is an example for a whole-home system, not a portable bedroom cooler. Installed design also has to account for airflow distribution and exhaust openings, so use the manufacturer’s sizing instructions or consult an HVAC professional. 4. Plan for ventilation and moisture
A direct cooler needs an exit path for the air it supplies. Open a window or door, ideally arranging cross-ventilation so fresh cooled air can move through the occupied area and warmer, humid air can leave. In a sealed room, moisture can build up and undermine comfort. The Department of Energy’s guidance says a window or vent must be open during operation. U.S. Department of Energy: Evaporative Coolers

Before buying, consider whether the room has a practical way to exhaust air. If you cannot leave an opening available, a direct evaporative cooler may not be a suitable choice for that space.

5. Compare the details that affect everyday use
- Noise: Look for a rated noise level if the manufacturer provides one, especially for a bedroom or workspace.
- Placement and mobility: Check the unit’s dimensions, weight, caster design, and whether its airflow can reach the occupied part of the room.
- Water supply: Compare tank size, refill frequency, and whether the model supports a water connection. A larger tank can reduce refills but does not by itself establish stronger cooling.
- Cleaning and seasonal care: Check how the pads, reservoir, and other water-contact parts are cleaned, drained, or maintained.
- Controls: Compare fan speeds, timers, and other controls that matter for your use.
- Design and ventilation: Confirm whether the unit is direct or indirect and what opening or exhaust arrangement it requires.
- Rated airflow and coverage: Compare CFM and the maker’s stated coverage, keeping in mind that room conditions affect results.

6. Treat energy and installation comparisons as broad estimates
A Department of Energy Home Cooling infographic published around 2017 says evaporative coolers cost about half as much to install and use about one-quarter the energy of central air conditioning. These are broad, dated comparisons—not current quotes or guarantees for a particular cooler, home, or installation. Compare current product specifications and local installation estimates for a purchase decision. U.S. Department of Energy: Energy Saver Guide (PDF)
7. Maintain the cooler
Regular cleaning and draining help keep an evaporative cooler operating efficiently, and the reservoir needs regular maintenance. Follow the model’s instructions for cleaning its pads and water-contact components and for draining it when it will not be used. The Department of Energy specifically recommends regular cleaning and draining. U.S. Department of Energy: Home Cooling infographic; PNNL Building America Solution Center
