Choose Free for occasional personal questions, Pro for regular individual work, Max 5x or Max 20x when a personal workflow repeatedly hits Pro limits, Team for organizations that need shared administration and at least five seats, and Enterprise when security controls, compliance, integrations, or very large context windows justify a sales-led contract.

Claude chat subscriptions and Console/API charges are separate. Check Anthropic’s upgrade page for your country, currency, taxes, current model availability, and the exact treatment of Claude Code before paying.

Quick answer: which Claude plan fits?

Your situation Best starting point Why it fits Main caution
Occasional personal questions or experiments Free No subscription fee and the core chat features Usage is limited and availability depends on location
Regular writing, research, coding, or analysis by one person Pro More capacity, model selection, Projects, Research, and priority access API usage is billed separately; choose monthly or annual billing carefully
Daily individual use that often reaches Pro limits Max 5x Five times Pro’s session capacity and higher output limits The monthly price only pays off when the additional capacity is genuinely used
Claude is central to nearly every work task Max 20x Twenty times Pro’s session capacity and priority during heavy traffic It is expensive and still has additional usage limits
A small or midsize organization wants shared billing and administration Team Per-user allowances, centralized administration, collaboration, and shared knowledge At least five members and a business email are required
A regulated or large organization needs formal controls Enterprise SSO, SCIM, audit logs, retention controls, compliance tooling, integrations, and enhanced context Pricing is not public; sales must scope seats and requirements

Understand what you are buying

Claude’s individual subscriptions are designed around a person’s chat account. Team and Enterprise are organization accounts with seats, domains, administration, and collaboration controls. The distinction matters more than the model name: a company may need Team or Enterprise even if each employee uses Claude less than a heavy individual user.

A Claude chat plan is not a universal Anthropic account balance. Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise cover their respective chat experiences and plan entitlements. Console/API usage has separate billing, and the treatment of Claude Code can vary by plan, so verify both items on the purchase screen.

Personal plans

Free: test the workflow before paying

Free costs $0 and is available through the web, iOS, Android, and desktop applications where Claude is supported. Anthropic lists writing and editing, text and image analysis, web search, code generation, data visualization, and desktop extensions among the included capabilities.

The trade-off is limited usage. A free account is suitable for occasional questions, trying a prompt workflow, or checking whether Claude’s style fits you. It is a poor foundation for a deadline-driven routine because the allowance can be exhausted when demand is high. Location eligibility and feature availability also need to be checked for your country.

Pro: the default for regular individual work

Anthropic’s US plan-selection guidance lists Pro at $20 per month. The pricing page also lists an annual option equivalent to $17 per month, billed as $200 up front. The annual figure is a discount only when you are comfortable committing to the full year; monthly billing costs more over twelve months but preserves flexibility.

Pro provides at least five times the usage per session compared with Free, plus priority access, model selection, Projects, and knowledge bases. Anthropic’s pricing information also lists unlimited Projects, Research, Google Workspace connections, remote MCP connections, extended thinking, access to more models, and Claude Code access. These features make Pro the practical starting point for a person who writes, studies, analyzes documents, programs, or conducts research every week.

Pro is not automatically the right choice for API development. Console/API consumption is outside the chat subscription and must be funded separately. If your main goal is an application, automation, or a service that calls a model programmatically, evaluate Console billing rather than upgrading the chat plan for that purpose.

Max 5x: a capacity upgrade for heavy personal use

Anthropic’s plan guide lists Max 5x at $100 per month. It is aimed at people using Claude throughout the day or for most tasks. The plan guide describes five times more usage per session than Pro, with higher output limits, early access to advanced features, and priority access when traffic is high.

Max 5x is sensible when you can identify a recurring Pro-limit problem: long coding sessions, repeated document analysis, extensive project work, or several demanding tasks every day. It is not a general quality guarantee; the principal benefit is capacity and access. If you rarely see a limit message, the extra $80 over monthly Pro is unlikely to produce proportional value.

Max 20x: for a Claude-first personal workflow

Max 20x is listed at $200 per month and provides twenty times Pro’s session capacity according to Anthropic’s plan guide. It targets users whose work is organized around Claude for most of the day and who regularly exhaust lower tiers.

Before selecting it, record how often Pro actually interrupts your work and whether those interruptions have a measurable cost. Max still has additional usage limits, so a very high-volume developer or team should not treat it as unlimited infrastructure. If multiple people need access, an organization plan is usually a better account model than buying several individual Max subscriptions.

Business plans

Team: shared administration for five or more people

Team is priced at $25 per person per month with annual billing or $30 per person per month with monthly billing. Anthropic requires a minimum of five members, so the minimum subscription is five seats. At the listed rates, that is at least $125 per month equivalent when billed annually (with the annual commitment paid according to Anthropic’s checkout terms) or $150 per month when billed monthly, before taxes and regional adjustments.

Team adds increased usage per user, centralized billing and administration, Projects, Knowledge Bases, and collaboration features. Anthropic’s Team documentation describes a 200,000-token context window. That is useful for large working documents, but context size is only one part of performance: model choice, output limits, file handling, and the quality of your prompts still affect results.

Signup guidance requires a business email and does not accept public email domains in the cited flow. Confirm the current rule if your organization uses a special domain or a nonprofit address. Team is appropriate when you want one administrator to manage seats and payment without needing Enterprise-grade identity, audit, or retention controls.

Enterprise: governance, compliance, and scale

Enterprise pricing is contact-sales rather than a published monthly rate. It includes Team capabilities plus SSO and domain capture, just-in-time provisioning, role-based permissions, audit logs, SCIM, custom retention controls, a compliance API, increased usage, native data-source integrations such as GitHub, and enhanced context.

Anthropic documents a 500,000-token context window with Claude Sonnet 4 for Enterprise. The same Enterprise article lists a standard 200,000-token context window with Claude Opus 4.1, Opus 4, or Sonnet 3.7. These figures are model-specific; do not assume every Enterprise model accepts 500,000 tokens.

Enterprise uses standard and premium seats. Standard seats provide the core Enterprise features. Premium seats add Claude Code and higher usage, so a quote should distinguish how many employees need premium capabilities rather than pricing every employee at the premium level by default.

Education: a separate university-wide option

Anthropic also presents an Education plan for universities, with student and faculty access, discounted rates, academic research and learning mode, API credits, and training resources. The reviewed public material does not state a price. A university should request a current quote and confirm eligibility, provisioning, data controls, and which users receive which entitlements.

Compare plans by the factors that affect your decision

Usage capacity

Free has limited usage. Pro supplies the standard paid individual allowance, while Max 5x and Max 20x scale that allowance by the multiples in their names relative to Pro’s session capacity. Team and Enterprise set allowances per user or seat and may offer higher limits than individual plans. Limits can change with traffic, model, message size, and policy, so treat published multiples as plan guidance rather than a promise of unlimited messages.

Account model and collaboration

Free, Pro, and Max are optimized for one person. Team introduces seats, centralized payment, administration, Projects, Knowledge Bases, and collaboration. Enterprise adds domain capture, automated provisioning, and granular permissions for larger deployments. If employees need separate ownership, offboarding, or a central record of activity, do not solve that problem by sharing an individual login.

Security and governance

Enterprise is the tier with the documented SSO, SCIM, role-based permissions, audit logs, custom retention controls, and compliance API. Those controls matter for regulated data, formal identity lifecycle management, legal discovery, and security monitoring. Team may be enough for a small company that only needs billing and basic administration, but it should not be represented as a substitute for Enterprise governance.

Context and long documents

Team documents a 200,000-token context window. Enterprise can reach 500,000 tokens with Sonnet 4, while the listed Opus and Sonnet models use a standard 200,000-token window. A larger window helps when a task genuinely requires many source documents in one conversation; it does not remove the need to manage instructions, retrieve relevant passages, or protect sensitive information.

Developer access

Pro’s chat subscription does not include Console API usage. Claude Code access is listed for Pro and as a premium-seat addition in Enterprise, while current Team treatment should be confirmed at checkout. Developers should price chat seats, Claude Code usage, and API calls as separate line items until Anthropic explicitly combines them in the selected plan.

How to choose step by step

  1. Define the user count. If only one person needs Claude, compare Free, Pro, and Max. If five or more people need managed access, evaluate Team. If you need formal identity, audit, retention, or compliance features, begin with Enterprise requirements.
  2. Measure your actual workload. For two to four weeks, note how often you hit limits, how long tasks run, which models you use, and whether interruptions affect paid work. This prevents choosing Max based on an occasional spike.
  3. Separate chat from development. List conversational work, Claude Code, and API calls separately. A chat upgrade will not automatically pay for Console usage.
  4. List governance requirements. Ask whether your organization needs SSO, SCIM, role-based permissions, audit logs, custom retention, a compliance API, domain capture, or native data-source integrations. Any required Enterprise control should be treated as a hard requirement, not a nice-to-have.
  5. Estimate the seat mix. For Team, count all required seats because five is the minimum. For Enterprise, identify standard versus premium users so the sales quote reflects who needs Claude Code or higher usage.
  6. Check regional checkout details. Confirm local currency, tax treatment, supported location, model availability, annual commitment terms, cancellation rules, and the current wording for usage limits before completing payment.
  7. Choose the lowest tier that meets the constraint. Start with Free or Pro when the issue is personal usage, move to Max only for persistent capacity pressure, and choose Team or Enterprise when administration and governance—not just message volume—drive the purchase.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Buying Max to solve an API problem: Max increases chat capacity; Console/API charges remain separate.
  • Assuming “unlimited” means no limits: Pro’s Projects are described as unlimited, but plan usage, output, traffic, and safety limits still apply.
  • Ignoring the Team minimum: A two-person company cannot buy only two Team seats under the stated five-member minimum; compare the cost of five seats with the value of centralized administration.
  • Using personal accounts for company data: Individual plans lack the documented Enterprise identity, audit, and retention controls. Use an organization plan when ownership and offboarding matter.
  • Assuming every model has the largest context: Enterprise’s 500,000-token figure is documented for Sonnet 4; other listed models use 200,000 tokens.
  • Locking into annual billing without checking usage: Pro’s annual price is billed up front. Validate that your workload and location support the commitment before selecting it.
  • Expecting one plan to cover every employee equally: Enterprise premium seats cost more because they add Claude Code and higher usage. Match seats to job requirements.
  • Forgetting taxes and currency conversion: Published US or US-dollar figures are reference prices. The upgrade page is the authority for your checkout total.

Practical examples

Independent writer or student

Start with Free if you ask a few questions each week. Move to Pro when you need Projects, Research, model selection, or dependable access for ongoing assignments. Max is justified only if repeated limits interrupt daily work, not simply because a larger plan exists.

Software developer working alone

Use Pro for regular code generation, analysis, and Projects, then track Claude Code and API consumption separately. Choose Max 5x when interactive work repeatedly reaches Pro capacity. If the main product is an application calling Claude, budget Console/API usage independently from any chat subscription.

Five-person consultancy

Team meets the stated seat minimum and centralizes billing, Projects, Knowledge Bases, and administration. Before buying, verify the business-email requirement and whether the current Team offering includes the Claude Code treatment your developers need.

Large or regulated employer

Document identity, provisioning, audit, retention, compliance, integration, and context requirements first. Request an Enterprise quote that separates standard and premium seats, confirms model-specific context windows, and states usage allowances and data controls in writing.

Final decision rule

Pay for Pro when regular personal work is the problem, for Max when measurable individual capacity limits are the problem, for Team when shared administration across at least five people is the problem, and for Enterprise when governance, compliance, integrations, or enhanced context are the problem. Recheck Anthropic’s current upgrade and pricing information immediately before purchase because prices, taxes, availability, model access, limits, and Claude Code entitlements can change.
