For most routine questions, start with Instant. Switch to a reasoning option when the task involves several steps, conflicting information or a difficult decision. Reserve Pro for unusually difficult or long-running work when your account offers it and the extra allowance is worthwhile. Your best choice also depends on plan, workspace permissions, available usage and the controls shown in your model picker.
What the ChatGPT model choices mean
ChatGPT’s model picker is no longer simply a ranking from “weakest” to “strongest.” The practical difference is how much reasoning effort and time a task deserves. OpenAI’s March 17, 2026 release note describes the choices this way: “Instant – fast responses for everyday questions,” Thinking as “deeper reasoning for more complex tasks,” and Pro as “the most advanced reasoning models.” Those descriptions are useful starting points, but labels and access can change as models roll out.

With GPT-6 selected, the picker can show Instant, Medium, High and Extra High. These are GPT-6 Sol effort levels where available. Pro uses GPT-6 Pro, powered by GPT-6 Astra. The separate GPT-5.6 Sol selections can remain visible even while GPT-6 replaces the former “Latest” choice for eligible accounts.
Recommended Free Tools
Free and Go accounts receive GPT-5.6 Luna and can select Think for harder questions. A paid account may see GPT-6 options during the rollout, while a Business or Enterprise workspace administrator can restrict which models employees may use. Consequently, the right answer is not always the model with the most impressive name; it is the highest-effort option that your task needs and your account can use without exhausting its allowance.

The quickest way to choose
- Routine question, short explanation or quick draft: choose Instant, or the normal GPT-5.6 Luna experience on Free or Go.
- Several steps, detailed comparison or difficult reasoning: choose a reasoning level available to your account. Free and Go users can choose Think; GPT-6 users may see Medium or High.
- Unusually difficult or long-running workflow: consider Pro only when it appears in your picker and the task justifies its higher allowance and slower response.
- A choice is missing: check your plan and any workspace-admin restrictions before assuming the model has been removed.
This sequence is practical guidance based on OpenAI’s descriptions, not a claim that one model wins every independent benchmark. No universal winner has been established for all everyday tasks.
Compare the available choices
| Choice | Best fit | What to expect | Access notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Instant | Everyday questions, quick drafts and straightforward explanations | Fast response with the least deliberate reasoning effort among GPT-6 Sol levels | Shown to eligible GPT-6 users; exact availability varies by plan and workspace |
| Medium | Tasks that need more checking than a quick answer | Standard GPT-6 Sol thinking effort, trading some speed for analysis | Available only where the account exposes this GPT-6 level |
| High | Multi-step analysis, complex planning and ambiguous problems | Extended GPT-6 Sol thinking effort; responses may take longer | Plan, workspace and allowance controls apply |
| Extra High | The most demanding GPT-6 Sol tasks | Highest GPT-6 Sol effort level described in the current guide | Not guaranteed for every account; inspect the picker and allowance |
| Pro | Difficult or long-running workflows that merit the strongest available reasoning | Uses GPT-6 Pro, powered by GPT-6 Astra; usually a deliberate choice rather than a default | Only offered on eligible plans and workspaces, with its own allowance |
| Think | Harder questions for Free and Go users | A higher-effort mode available with GPT-5.6 Luna access | Free and Go users can select it; limits and safeguards still apply |
| GPT-5.6 Sol | Users who explicitly need that model family when it is listed | A separate model selection from the GPT-6 rollout choices | Availability depends on the account and workspace |
| GPT-5.6 Luna | General Free and Go usage | The model family provided to those plans, with Think available for harder questions | Free and Go access is subject to safeguards and tool-specific limits |
Which model should you use for common everyday tasks?
Quick factual questions and explanations
Start with Instant. It is designed for fast responses to ordinary questions such as defining a term, explaining a setting, drafting a short message or turning notes into a simple checklist. If the question is self-contained and the consequence of a minor misunderstanding is low, extra reasoning usually adds waiting time without a clear benefit.
Email, summaries and rewrites
Use Instant for a short email, a tone change, a concise summary or a first-pass rewrite. State the audience, desired length and tone in the prompt. Move to Medium or Think when the material contains competing instructions, legal or contractual language, or several documents that must be reconciled; those cases require more than surface-level rewriting.
Planning and decisions
Choose Medium, Think or High when you want a plan with dependencies, trade-offs or contingencies. Examples include comparing several travel routes, creating a study schedule around fixed commitments, or evaluating options against a list of constraints. Ask the model to show assumptions and identify missing information. Pro is appropriate only when the plan is unusually complicated or will run for a long time and your account provides enough allowance.
Analysis of files or data
A higher reasoning setting can help with a multi-step analysis, but model choice does not remove separate tool limits. OpenAI says file uploads and data analysis have allowances distinct from everyday text chats. Check both the model allowance and the tool allowance before starting a large job. If an upload or analysis control is unavailable, changing models may not fix it.

Voice, images and other tools
Voice, image generation and other tools also have separate limits. An account may have room for text conversations but still be unable to generate another image or use voice at that moment. Treat the model picker and the tool’s own limit indicator as separate controls.
How to select a model in ChatGPT
- Open the model picker in the ChatGPT conversation or workspace you are using. The labels shown there are the authoritative list for your account.
- Identify the task’s difficulty. Decide whether you need a quick answer, standard thinking, extended thinking or the strongest available reasoning for a long-running workflow.
- Choose the matching level. Select Instant for routine work; Medium or Think for a moderate step up; High or Extra High for demanding GPT-6 Sol work; or Pro when the task genuinely warrants GPT-6 Pro.
- Read the allowance or reset information. Before a heavy session, note the displayed usage allowance and when it resets. Thinking and Pro allowances depend on plan, model and workspace.
- Run a small first prompt. Give the model the actual constraints and ask it to state assumptions. This lets you detect a poor fit before spending a large allowance on a long request.
- Escalate only if needed. If the first response misses requirements, clarify the prompt first. If the problem itself needs deeper analysis, move up one reasoning level rather than jumping directly to Pro.
- Return to a faster level for routine follow-ups. Once the difficult part is solved, use Instant for formatting, short edits or simple questions so you do not consume high-effort allowance unnecessarily.
Choosing between speed and reasoning effort
Use Instant when latency matters
Instant is the sensible default for a high volume of small requests. It keeps a conversation moving when you are brainstorming titles, checking grammar, asking for a definition or requesting a short set of instructions. The choice is about response speed and proportionality, not a promise that every answer will be correct.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Use Medium or Think for a balanced step up
Medium provides standard GPT-6 Sol thinking where that level is available. Think gives Free and Go users a harder-question mode with GPT-5.6 Luna access. These are useful when an answer requires a few connected inferences but is not a long research or planning workflow. They are often the best compromise when Instant produces an answer that is too shallow.
Use High or Extra High for complex reasoning
High and Extra High are intended for tasks where the model must track many conditions, inspect alternatives or work through a difficult chain of reasoning. Extra High is the highest GPT-6 Sol effort level described in the current guide. Because higher effort can take longer and consume a limited allowance, reserve it for problems that actually benefit from additional analysis.
Use Pro selectively
Pro uses GPT-6 Pro, powered by GPT-6 Astra, and is described for difficult or longer-running workflows. It is not automatically the best choice for a two-sentence email or a basic explanation. Select it when the task’s complexity, duration or consequences justify the additional resource use and your account offers it.

Plan, rollout and workspace caveats
Rollout status
OpenAI’s current ChatGPT guide says GPT-6 is replacing the “Latest” choice as it rolls out to eligible users. Explicit GPT-5.6 Sol selections can remain separate. During a staged rollout, two people can see different pickers without either account being misconfigured.
Free and Go plans
Free and Go users receive GPT-5.6 Luna and can select Think for harder questions. OpenAI describes everyday text chats on these plans as unlimited subject to safeguards, but that does not mean unlimited access to every capability. File uploads, image generation, voice, data analysis and other tools have separate limits.
Paid plans and allowances
Thinking and Pro usage depends on the plan, model and workspace. Before using a high-effort option repeatedly, inspect the allowance and reset information displayed in your account. A model can be visible yet temporarily unavailable after its allowance is reached, or available with a lower limit than another model.
Managed Business and Enterprise workspaces
Workspace administrators may control model access in Business and Enterprise. If Instant is visible but High, Extra High or Pro is missing, the cause may be an administrator policy rather than a product change. Contact the workspace administrator or review the workspace’s model policy instead of changing prompts to compensate.
What to do when the model you want is missing
- Check the plan: GPT-6 and Pro are not guaranteed on every plan. Free and Go accounts should expect GPT-5.6 Luna with Think rather than the full GPT-6 picker.
- Check workspace permissions: Business and Enterprise administrators can limit model access.
- Check the rollout: GPT-6 availability is being staged, so eligible accounts may receive it at different times.
- Check the allowance: A temporary usage limit can make a choice unavailable even when it normally appears.
- Check the task tool: If the problem involves files, images, voice or data analysis, that tool may have its own limit independent of the selected model.
- Use the visible alternative: Start with Instant or Think, improve the prompt and escalate when a higher level becomes available. Do not assume a hidden model is required for an ordinary task.
A practical decision framework
| Question to ask yourself | If the answer is yes | Recommended action |
|---|---|---|
| Is this a routine, low-consequence request? | You need speed more than extensive deliberation | Use Instant, or the standard GPT-5.6 Luna experience on Free or Go |
| Must the answer connect several steps or constraints? | A quick response may overlook relationships | Choose Medium or Think |
| Are there many alternatives, exceptions or ambiguous requirements? | The task needs deliberate checking | Choose High when available |
| Will the workflow be unusually difficult or long-running? | Time and deeper reasoning matter more than speed | Consider Pro, or Extra High for GPT-6 Sol work |
| Are you working under a tight allowance? | Every high-effort request has a cost in available usage | Start lower, escalate only after clarifying the prompt |
| Is the desired option absent? | Access may be controlled by plan, rollout or workspace policy | Verify eligibility and permissions before troubleshooting the task itself |
How to get better results regardless of model
Model selection cannot compensate for an underspecified request. Include the outcome you want, the relevant context, constraints, audience, format and a definition of success. For a difficult task, ask the model to list assumptions, identify uncertainty and separate facts from recommendations. These instructions help you judge whether a higher reasoning level is actually helping.

Break a long workflow into stages when possible. Ask for a plan first, provide corrections, then request the final output. This can be more efficient than sending one enormous prompt to Pro. Conversely, if the task genuinely requires holding many interdependent constraints at once, a higher reasoning level may be appropriate.
Do not treat a more expensive or slower option as a guarantee of accuracy. OpenAI’s public descriptions support task-based selection, but they do not establish that one model is objectively best for every everyday request. Verify important outputs yourself, especially when the answer affects money, health, safety, employment or legal obligations.
Examples of sensible model choices
“Rewrite this message to sound friendlier.”
Use Instant. Specify the recipient and tone, then review the result. There is no reason to spend a high-effort allowance on a short stylistic edit.
“Compare these three offers against my budget and list the trade-offs.”
Use Medium or Think. Supply the complete figures and ask for assumptions to be shown. Move to High if the offers contain many conditions or the initial comparison misses relationships between them.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
“Build a project plan with dependencies, risks and fallback dates.”
Use High when available. Pro is justified only if the plan is unusually extensive or part of a long-running workflow and the account provides it.
“Analyze an uploaded data file and explain anomalies.”
Choose a reasoning level suited to the complexity, then confirm that file-upload and data-analysis allowances are available. A model upgrade cannot bypass a separate tool limit.
Bottom line for everyday use
Make Instant your default. Move to Medium or Think when the answer needs connected reasoning, use High or Extra High for genuinely complex GPT-6 Sol work, and reserve Pro for difficult or long-running workflows that justify it. Always follow the options, allowance and reset information shown in your own account, because plan eligibility, workspace controls and the GPT-6 rollout determine what you can actually select.
