Check chemistry and size first
Read the markings on both the battery and charger. Confirm the battery chemistry—such as NiMH or NiCd—and whether the charger supports its size, such as AA or AAA. For rechargeable AA or AAA NiMH cells, look for a charger specified for NiMH AA/AAA batteries, then verify the exact model in its instructions. Panasonic’s battery selection guidance identifies chemistry and size as core considerations.

Do not assume that a charger designed for one chemistry can charge another. Panasonic warns that NiMH batteries should not be charged in a NiCd-only charger; check the NiMH and NiCd-only charger guidance if this is your situation.
Compare the compatible chargers against your needs
Once chemistry and size match, compare the practical details that affect how you will use the charger:

- Charging indicators and speed: A completion display can help you know when charging is done, while faster charging may be useful if you often need cells quickly. These are convenience choices, not a substitute for compatibility.
- Exact model and power supply: Check the charger’s manual or the manufacturer’s compatibility information for model, series, and any included or required power adapter. Panasonic notes that compatibility can vary with specifications and product series in its charger compatibility FAQ.
If you have NiCd cells or another less common rechargeable chemistry, use the battery and charger manufacturers’ compatibility tables or the exact product manuals. Do not transfer compatibility assumptions from a different charger model or generation.
Never charge disposable batteries
Put only cells labeled rechargeable—and supported by the charger—in a charger. Do not attempt to recharge ordinary alkaline, carbon-zinc, or primary lithium batteries. Duracell warns that charging a non-rechargeable battery can cause rupture or leakage in its FAQ; Panasonic also warns of leakage and possible rupture, fire, or explosion in its dry-battery FAQ.

Follow the specific charger’s instructions
Use the charger manual for cell placement and polarity, which combinations can be charged together, charging duration, and when to remove the batteries. Do not assume that a time estimate or protective feature described for one charger applies to another.

This is guidance from that manufacturer’s charger-family document, not a universal charging formula; follow the instructions for your own charger instead.
