How to Choose the Right Capacity and Dimensions for a Side-by-Side Refrigerator

The right side-by-side refrigerator is chosen in this order: measure the kitchen opening and delivery route, verify the model’s clearances and door swing, then select enough interior capacity for the way your household shops and stores food. A refrigerator can have suitable cubic feet yet fail to fit through a doorway or open beside a wall, so capacity and exterior dimensions must be checked separately.

The three decisions that determine whether a refrigerator will work

  1. Measure the opening and route. Record height, width and depth at several points, including obstructions, then measure every doorway, turn and stairway between the delivery entrance and the kitchen.
  2. Filter by installation requirements. Check hinge height, door and handle depth, ventilation gaps, door-opening space and the exact installation guide for each candidate.
  3. Match interior capacity to habits. Consider shopping frequency, bulk purchases, meal preparation, entertaining and the amount of frozen food you keep. Household headcount alone is not a reliable capacity formula.

Only models that pass all three tests belong on your shortlist. Capacity is an interior-volume measurement; width, height and depth describe the outside fit.

What refrigerator capacity actually tells you

Cubic feet describe the manufacturer’s total interior volume. They do not tell you how much usable shelf space remains after ice makers, water filters, drawers, door bins and insulation, nor do they predict the appliance’s exterior dimensions. Two refrigerators with similar advertised capacity can have different shelf layouts and different fresh-food/freezer splits.

Use household behavior, not a head-count formula

GE Appliances says capacity guides are difficult to apply universally and gives 25 cubic feet or more as a broad rule of thumb for a typical family of four. That is guidance, not a minimum or a guarantee. A one-person household that buys in bulk, cooks several meals ahead or hosts frequently may need more room than a larger household that shops several times a week and stores little food.

Ask these questions before choosing a capacity:

  • How many days of fresh food do you normally keep between shopping trips?
  • Do you buy warehouse-size packages, large drinks or whole produce boxes?
  • How many prepared meals, leftovers or meal-prep containers occupy the refrigerator?
  • Do you freeze meat, baked goods, garden produce or prepared meals for long periods?
  • Do holidays, sports events or regular guests create temporary storage peaks?
  • Would a narrow side-by-side freezer be practical for the shape of food you store?

Write down the answers for a normal week and for your busiest week. The larger requirement is the one your refrigerator must accommodate without unsafe overpacking.

Capacity is not the same as usable space

Side-by-side designs divide the cabinet vertically, so each compartment is relatively narrow. Tall bottles may fit conveniently in the door, while wide trays, pizza boxes and large roasting pans can be harder to place. Compare the stated total capacity and the refrigerator/freezer allocation, then inspect shelf width, drawer dimensions, door-bin layout and the location of the ice maker. Features that improve convenience can also consume interior volume.

Measure the opening before comparing models

Do not measure only the old refrigerator. Measure the finished opening and every protrusion that can interfere with the new one. GE’s measuring guidance identifies height to the top of the hinge, width and case depth without the handle as key side-by-side measurements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Take accurate opening measurements

  1. Height: Measure from the finished floor to the lowest obstruction at the front, middle and back of the opening. Check crown molding, cabinets, soffits and light fixtures. Record the smallest result.
  2. Width: Measure side to side near the floor, at counter height and near the top. Check both the front edge and the rear of the cavity, especially if walls are not parallel. Use the narrowest measurement.
  3. Depth: Measure from the back wall to the front edge of the counter, cabinet or island. Note baseboards, rear trim, outlets, water lines and any pipe that reduces usable depth.
  4. Obstructions: Record countertop overhangs, wall trim, cabinet fillers and heating or ventilation grilles. A few millimetres can determine whether a door clears an adjacent surface.
  5. Repeat the measurements: Measure again after moving the old appliance. A floor that slopes or a wall that bows can make one reading misleading.

Keep the measurements in a diagram with the location of each obstruction. When you read a product listing, distinguish case depth from depth including doors and handles. Check whether the listed height includes the hinge; a cabinet that fits below the case may still collide with an upper cabinet when the hinge is included.

Check the open-door position

A refrigerator that fits with its doors closed may be unusable if the doors cannot open far enough to release bins or drawers. GE notes that many models need a 90-degree opening or wider for access to interior storage. Measure from the hinge side to the nearest wall, island, cabinet or appliance, and draw the door’s swing into the floor plan.

  • Confirm that each door can open without striking a wall or handle on a neighboring appliance.
  • Check that crisper drawers and freezer baskets can be pulled out with the doors at the available angle.
  • Make sure an open door does not block the main walkway, oven, dishwasher or entry door.
  • For a model with a water or ice dispenser, verify that the dispenser side can be used without forcing the opposite door against a wall.

Measure the delivery route

Measure the complete route, not just the final alcove. Include the exterior entrance, security door, hallway, stairwell, elevator, turns and the approach to the kitchen. At every point, record the narrowest width and the lowest height. Look for railings, door closers, baseboards and ceiling lights that cannot be removed.

Ask the retailer or carrier how the model is packaged and whether doors can be removed for delivery. Do not assume that a refrigerator will be delivered in the same orientation as the one it replaces. A unit can meet the kitchen measurements and still fail at a tight turn.

Clearance, ventilation and installation requirements

Manufacturers specify clearances for airflow, electrical and water connections, door movement and service access. There is no universal clearance number for every side-by-side refrigerator. Use the installation guide for the exact model after the opening has been measured.

Example: Samsung’s published installation guidance

Samsung’s guidance illustrates why model-specific instructions matter. It calls for at least 1 inch behind the refrigerator for ventilation and connections, 3/8 inch on both sides and at the top for installation, and at least 2.5 inches on the wall side where an open door could contact the wall. Those figures apply to the Samsung guidance cited here, not to every manufacturer or installation.

Clearances can change with a built-in water line, an unusually deep counter, a tight corner or a door that must open beyond 90 degrees. Treat the manufacturer’s minimum as a starting condition, then allow practical room to clean behind the cabinet and to level or service it if the installation guide requires that access.

Closed dimensions versus operating space

Record three separate footprints:

  • Closed footprint: the cabinet, doors and handles in the normal shut position.
  • Installation envelope: the closed footprint plus the manufacturer’s top, side and rear ventilation or connection clearances.
  • Operating envelope: the space occupied when doors, drawers and bins are opened far enough for normal use.

Compare all three with the room plan. A cabinet can fit inside the installation envelope while its operating envelope blocks a walkway or prevents a drawer from opening.

Typical side-by-side exterior dimensions

Whirlpool publishes these rough ranges for side-by-side refrigerators:

Dimension Published rough range How to use it
Width 30 to 39¾ inches Initial screening only; compare the exact model width at the cabinet and the doors.
Height 68 to 71¼ inches Check the lowest ceiling or cabinet point and whether height includes the hinge.
Depth 23 to 31⅛ inches Check case depth, door depth and handle depth separately.

These are typical ranges, not a promise that a particular refrigerator will fit. Dimensions vary by manufacturer and model, and the listed measurement may be taken with or without handles. Use the exact specification sheet and installation manual for every finalist.

How much capacity do you need?

After eliminating models that cannot fit, compare capacity against your actual storage pattern. The following framework avoids treating a general household-size chart as a guarantee.

Your storage pattern Capacity implication What to inspect
Frequent small shopping trips You may value organization and accessible shelves more than maximum total volume. Adjustable shelves, drawer layout and door-bin access.
Bulk buying or infrequent shopping Allow additional headroom for large packages and several days of food. Wide shelves, strong drawers, tall-bottle storage and freezer width.
Meal preparation and leftovers Prioritize clear, continuous shelf space for containers rather than only headline cubic feet. Shelf depth, drawer dimensions and removable shelf positions.
Frequent hosting Plan for temporary peaks in drinks, platters and prepared food. Door-bin capacity, adjustable shelves and the ability to remove or reposition bins.
Heavy frozen-food storage Check the freezer share and the shape of its shelves and baskets; total capacity alone can hide a cramped freezer. Freezer width, basket pull-out clearance and ice-maker location.

ENERGY STAR consumer guidance identifies 16 to 20 cubic feet as the typical range of the most energy-efficient models. That is a description of efficient-model sizing, not a household recommendation. If your habits require more space, choose the smallest capacity that handles your peak load rather than buying excess volume solely because it is available.

Compare models that pass the fit test

Once two or more candidates fit, compare them on the same specification basis. A useful comparison sheet includes:

Comparison item Why it matters Verification method
Total capacity Shows total interior volume but not layout quality. Use the manufacturer’s stated cubic feet.
Fresh-food/freezer split Reveals whether the allocation matches your shopping and freezing habits. Read the detailed specification, not just the headline capacity.
Width and hinge height Determine whether the cabinet and top hinge clear the opening. Compare exact measurements with your smallest opening readings.
Depth with doors and handles Controls counter projection and route clearance. Check every depth notation in the listing and manual.
Door swing and wall clearance Determines whether drawers and bins can be used. Use the installation diagram and your floor plan.
Ventilation and connections Insufficient space can prevent correct installation or service. Follow the model-specific installation guide.
Energy information and certification Allows a fairer operating-cost comparison among models. Compare the exact model’s energy data and configuration.
Ice and water features Can change usable storage and energy use depending on design. Verify the feature’s placement and published specifications.

A specification example

The ENERGY STAR listing for the Hamilton Beach HBF2064/HZ4602 identifies a side-by-side refrigerator with 20.7 cubic feet of total volume, a height of 70.1 inches and a width of 35.9 inches. The listing reported market availability and certification on November 5, 2024, in the United States and Canada. This is an example of how capacity and exterior dimensions appear together in a real listing; it does not establish current retail stock, price or fit in your kitchen.

Energy use and certification

ENERGY STAR states, “Generally, the larger the refrigerator, the greater the energy consumption.” Its buying guidance also notes that top-freezer refrigerators tend to use less energy than side-by-side models. These are broad comparisons, not a prediction of any particular household’s bill.

ENERGY STAR’s refrigerator criteria depend on configuration, size, defrost type and ice-maker configuration. For refrigerators and refrigerator-freezers of at least 7.75 cubic feet, the criteria page says a qualifying model must use 10% less measured energy than federal minimum standards. Certification is a useful screening signal, but compare the specific models’ energy information and features rather than assuming every certified design performs identically.

Through-door ice and water systems, automatic ice makers and unusual cooling configurations can affect both usable storage and energy use. Compare like-for-like models and read the manufacturer’s specifications before treating a feature as an advantage.

A practical selection workflow

  1. Draw the opening. Mark the narrowest height, width and depth, plus baseboards, overhangs, trim, outlets and water connections.
  2. Draw the operating envelope. Mark the hinge side, door arcs, drawer pull-out space and any wall or island that could stop a 90-degree opening.
  3. Measure the route. Record every doorway, turn, stair and hallway from the delivery entrance to the final position.
  4. Set a capacity target from habits. List normal and peak food loads, then decide how much refrigerator and freezer space each requires.
  5. Screen the market by exact dimensions. Reject any model whose hinge height, width, depth or required clearance fails before comparing features.
  6. Read the installation guide. Confirm ventilation, connection, wall-side and door-opening requirements for each remaining model.
  7. Compare usable layout. Check shelf width, drawer dimensions, freezer organization and the space consumed by ice or water hardware.
  8. Compare energy information. Consider certification, configuration and model-specific energy data alongside capacity.
  9. Confirm delivery conditions. Ask about packaging dimensions, door removal and the carrier’s route requirements before ordering.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Choosing by cubic feet alone

Problem: A large capacity number hides narrow shelves, an inconvenient freezer split or an ice maker that occupies prime space.
Fix: Compare the interior layout and the refrigerator/freezer allocation after confirming the total volume.

Measuring only the old appliance

Problem: The old unit may be shorter, narrower or less deep than current models, and its doors may swing differently.
Fix: Measure the finished opening, all obstructions and the exact candidate’s hinge, door and handle dimensions.

Ignoring the top hinge

Problem: A cabinet appears to clear the refrigerator case but catches the hinge cap.
Fix: Compare the opening’s lowest height with the manufacturer’s height to the top of the hinge.

Using a generic clearance number

Problem: A gap suitable for one model may not satisfy another model’s ventilation, connection or wall-contact requirement.
Fix: Use the exact installation manual; treat published figures such as Samsung’s 1-inch rear, 3/8-inch side and top, and 2.5-inch wall-side guidance as model-specific examples.

Forgetting the route

Problem: The refrigerator fits the kitchen but cannot pass a doorway or turn.
Fix: Measure the packaged route and confirm whether delivery personnel can remove doors or other components.

Buying more capacity than you use

Problem: A larger cabinet can consume more energy and floor space without improving daily organization.
Fix: Choose the smallest model that accommodates your busiest normal load, then compare energy data among models that fit.

Final checklist before ordering

  • Opening height measured at several points, including the hinge area.
  • Opening width measured at the floor, counter and top, with the narrowest value recorded.
  • Depth checked against counters, islands, baseboards, trim, outlets and water connections.
  • Case, door and handle dimensions distinguished in the product specification.
  • Door swing, 90-degree access and drawer pull-out space tested on the floor plan.
  • Ventilation and connection clearances taken from the exact installation guide.
  • Every delivery doorway, turn, stair and hallway measured.
  • Total capacity and fresh-food/freezer allocation matched to normal and peak storage habits.
  • Shelf, drawer, bin and ice-maker layout checked for usable space.
  • Model-specific energy information and any ENERGY STAR certification compared.
  • Delivery packaging and possible door removal confirmed before purchase.

The best side-by-side refrigerator is not the one with the biggest capacity number. It is the smallest, most efficient model that clears the complete route, installs with the required ventilation, opens fully in the kitchen and provides the refrigerator/freezer space your household actually uses.
