Quick answer: choose the QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) if you want Bose’s fullest feature set, including CustomTune, Immersive Audio, Cinema Mode, ActiveSense and up to 30 hours of claimed battery life. Choose the QuietComfort Headphones (2nd Gen) if you want a newer, less expensive standard model with TrueSpatial modes and wired USB-C audio. Consider the earlier QuietComfort Headphones only when its live price is substantially lower and you do not need USB-C audio.
Which Bose QuietComfort model is right for you?
Bose’s current over-ear comparison centers on three generations: QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen), QuietComfort Headphones (2nd Gen), and the earlier QuietComfort Headphones. The two newer models share USB-C audio, but they target different budgets and feature priorities. The Ultra is the premium model; the standard 2nd Gen is the newer mainstream option; the earlier model is mainly a value candidate if you find remaining stock at a compelling price.

The Ultra 2nd Gen adds Bose’s premium processing and personalization features. Bose lists CustomTune, which adapts the listening experience to the individual wearer, plus Immersive Audio modes, Cinema Mode and a refined ActiveSense algorithm. The standard QuietComfort 2nd Gen introduces TrueSpatial technology with Still, Motion and Cinema modes, but it is positioned below the Ultra in the range.

Noise-control features
Ultra 2nd Gen provides Quiet, Aware, Immersion and Cinema listening modes in Bose’s comparison. Aware is intended for hearing the environment, while ActiveSense dynamically adjusts noise cancellation when surrounding sound changes. Bose also lists ActiveSense for the standard 2nd Gen when it is in Aware mode. These descriptions explain how the modes are designed to behave; they are not independent measurements of noise reduction.
Spatial and video listening
Ultra’s Immersion and Cinema modes are Bose’s virtualized listening features. Cinema Mode is designed to spatialize video audio while keeping dialogue clear. The standard 2nd Gen brings three TrueSpatial modes—Still, Motion and Cinema—that Bose says were previously exclusive to the Ultra series. Still is intended for a stationary listener, Motion for movement, and Cinema for video-style presentation. Whether these modes improve your experience is subjective, so they should be treated as a preference feature rather than a guaranteed sound-quality upgrade.
Wired audio
Both 2nd Gen models add USB-C audio. Bose specifically states that the standard QuietComfort 2nd Gen supports playback up to 24-bit/48 kHz over USB-C. Bose describes the Ultra 2nd Gen’s USB-C connection as lossless and low latency. The earlier QuietComfort comparison does not list USB-C audio, so it should not be assumed to support digital audio through its charging port.
Controls and design
Bose’s support comparison identifies push buttons on the standard models. The Ultra also has a volume slider. Bose describes generation-specific design refinements, but no independent fit or comfort testing is established here. If you are sensitive to clamp pressure, glasses contact or ear-cup depth, buy from a seller with a return period and test the fit at home.
QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen): who should buy them?
Choose the Ultra 2nd Gen when you want the broadest Bose feature set and are willing to pay the premium position. It is the logical choice for someone who will actually use CustomTune, spatial listening, Cinema Mode, multipoint Bluetooth or adaptive awareness features rather than simply needing basic active noise cancellation.
Battery figures and what they mean
Bose rates the Ultra 2nd Gen for up to 30 hours under its stated conditions. Bose also lists up to 23 hours with Immersive Audio enabled and up to 45 hours with ANC turned off. “Up to” is a laboratory-style maximum, not a promise of identical runtime for every listener. Volume, wireless behavior, temperature, call use and processing modes can change endurance.

Included hardware and connectivity
Bose’s specifications list Bluetooth 5.4, a rechargeable replaceable lithium-ion battery, a carry case, a 3.5 mm-to-2.5 mm audio cable and a USB-C cable. Multipoint Bluetooth is included in Bose’s comparison, useful when you alternate between two paired devices. If you are considering Snapdragon Sound or related aptX Adaptive behavior, Bose requires a compatible Snapdragon Sound-certified source device. A phone that lacks that certification will not necessarily provide the same codec features.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhen the Ultra premium is justified
- You want CustomTune or Bose’s Immersive Audio processing.
- You watch a lot of films or streamed video and specifically want Cinema Mode.
- You need the longest stated wireless endurance among these models with ANC enabled.
- You switch regularly between two Bluetooth sources and value multipoint.
- You want both USB-C digital audio and a supplied analog cable.
If none of those points matters, compare the current price gap with the standard 2nd Gen before buying. Paying the announced $449 launch price only makes sense if the premium functions are relevant to your routine; the actual price may now be different.
QuietComfort Headphones (2nd Gen): the standard-model choice
The standard QuietComfort 2nd Gen is aimed at buyers who want a current QuietComfort design without moving to the Ultra tier. Bose announced it on August 6, 2026, with U.S. preorders opening August 8 at $359 and shipping announced from August 13. Those are launch-period figures, not a verified current retail price.
What TrueSpatial adds
TrueSpatial gives this generation Still, Motion and Cinema immersive listening modes. Bose describes these as virtualized presentation options; they do not turn the headphones into a multichannel speaker system. Use Still when you remain seated, Motion when you want the presentation to accommodate movement, and Cinema for video. If you prefer an unprocessed stereo presentation, leave the immersive modes off.
USB-C audio and ANR Off
Bose states that wired USB-C playback supports up to 24-bit/48 kHz. This can be useful with a laptop, tablet or phone that has no headphone jack, and it avoids Bluetooth transmission while listening. The support comparison also lists an ANR Off mode, allowing you to disable active noise reduction instead of choosing only between noise cancellation and Aware.

Bose describes improved voice pickup for calls. That is a manufacturer claim rather than an independent microphone test, so people who rely on the headphones for long conference calls should confirm the return policy and test them with their own laptop and meeting software.

Choose this model when USB-C audio, a refreshed standard design and TrueSpatial are useful, but CustomTune, the Ultra’s full Immersive Audio feature set or premium controls are not worth the additional cost.
Is the earlier QuietComfort Headphones model still worth considering?
Bose’s support comparison lists the earlier QuietComfort Headphones as sold from October 2023. It distinguishes that model from the August 2026 standard 2nd Gen and September 2025 Ultra 2nd Gen. The key documented difference for buyers comparing generations is USB-C audio: the two newer generations include it, while the earlier model is not listed with USB-C audio.
Buy the older model only after checking the exact listing, warranty and live price. Bose’s comparison also notes QuietComfort SC and Club bundle variants with a soft case; the headphones themselves are identified as identical. Do not assume a bundle name means a different acoustic design, but do verify which case and accessories are included.
- Good reason to choose it: the discount is large enough to outweigh the missing USB-C audio and newer processing features.
- Reason to skip it: you plan to listen digitally over USB-C, want TrueSpatial or Cinema Mode, or need the newest generation’s call and awareness updates.
- Before ordering: confirm generation, included case, seller authorization, return period and battery condition if the item is not new.
Which Bose QuietComfort headphones are best for flying?
For flying, start with the model that gives you the noise-control behavior and battery reserve you will actually use. The Ultra 2nd Gen has Bose’s Quiet and Aware modes, ActiveSense and the highest stated ANC-on endurance at up to 30 hours. The standard 2nd Gen also offers Aware with ActiveSense and adds ANR Off. Either newer model can therefore cover a flight where you want cancellation during the engine’s steady noise and awareness when listening for announcements.
Do not interpret the battery ratings as guaranteed flight duration. Immersive Audio reduces the Ultra’s stated figure to up to 23 hours, and real use varies. Charge before departure, carry the supplied cable and keep a wired fallback available. If your seatback system or phone requires a particular connector, check the included cable and the source device before traveling.
Which model is best for video, podcasts and audiobooks?
Choose based on whether you want spatial presentation or straightforward speech. Bose describes Cinema Mode as spatializing sound while keeping dialogue clear. Ultra 2nd Gen includes Cinema alongside Immersion, while standard 2nd Gen offers TrueSpatial Cinema. For podcasts and audiobooks, many listeners may prefer normal stereo or a mode that does not make voices sound distant; test with familiar speech and disable processing if it distracts you.

- LEGENDARY NOISE CANCELLATION: Effortlessly combines noise cancelling headphones technology with passive features so you can shut off the outside world, quiet distractions, and take music beyond the beat
- PREMIUM COMFORT: Plush earcup cushions softly hug your ears, while a secure and comfortable padded band gently keeps your over ear headphones in place for those extra-long listening sessions
- 2 LISTENING MODES: These wireless Bluetooth headphones feature Quiet and Aware Modes that let you toggle between full noise cancelling or full awareness of your surroundings for seamless sound control
- HIGH-FIDELITY AUDIO/EQ CONTROL: Supercharge your favorite tracks with high-fidelity audio and Adjustable EQ that puts you in control of the bass, mid-range, and treble for unmatched bold sound
- ALL DAY BATTERY LIFE: Bose QuietComfort wireless headphones provide up to 24 hours of battery on a single charge, plus a 15-minute charge gives you up to 2.5 hours of additional play time
USB-C is useful for laptop and tablet video because it provides a wired path and avoids Bluetooth delay. The standard 2nd Gen’s specified ceiling is up to 24-bit/48 kHz. Ultra’s USB-C mode is described by Bose as lossless and low latency. These specifications describe the connection, not a guarantee that every streaming service supplies high-resolution audio.

Which model should you choose if you need to hear your surroundings?
Use Aware mode when you need environmental sound. Bose describes ActiveSense as a dynamic adjustment that responds to surrounding sound, and its support comparison places ActiveSense in Aware mode for the standard 2nd Gen. This is useful when a quiet commute suddenly becomes noisy, but it should not replace ordinary situational awareness near traffic, bicycles or machinery.
Ultra offers Quiet, Aware, Immersion and Cinema modes; standard 2nd Gen adds ANR Off as a separate option. ANR Off disables active noise reduction rather than trying to blend external sound through microphones. Select the mode that matches the situation instead of assuming one setting is safest everywhere.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How comfort, controls and fit should affect your decision
Feature lists cannot predict whether a headphone will fit your head. Bose markets the line as comfortable and identifies design differences by generation, but there is no independent fit test to establish a universal winner. Pay attention to:
- Clamp and weight: wear the headphones for at least 30 minutes, not just a quick fit check.
- Glasses and hair: check whether the seal breaks or pressure builds at the temple.
- Controls: Ultra combines push buttons with a volume slider; the standard models use push buttons.
- Case and bundle: confirm whether the package includes a hard carry case or the soft case associated with SC/Club variants.
- Returns: choose a seller whose return terms allow a genuine comfort trial.
Replacement-cushion compatibility is model-specific. Verify the exact generation before ordering cushions; a generic listing is not proof that it fits your headphones.
How to compare prices without being misled
Use the announced figures only as historical reference points. Bose announced a U.S. retail price of $449 for Ultra 2nd Gen in 2025 and a U.S. preorder price of $359 for standard QuietComfort 2nd Gen in 2026. Neither figure establishes the current price, a sale price, stock status or the price in another country.

Can you use Bose QuietComfort headphones with a USB-C cable?
Yes for the two 2nd Gen models, according to Bose’s release material. Connect a USB-C cable between the headphones and a compatible computer, tablet or phone, then select the headphones as the device’s audio output if the operating system does not switch automatically. Standard QuietComfort 2nd Gen is specified for up to 24-bit/48 kHz USB-C playback; Ultra 2nd Gen is described as supporting lossless USB-C audio.
The earlier QuietComfort comparison does not list USB-C audio. Its USB-C port should not be assumed to carry digital audio simply because it can charge the battery. If wired digital playback is essential, choose one of the 2nd Gen models and test the connection with your source during the return period.
A practical decision checklist
- Set your use case: flying, office calls, video, music, commuting or mixed use.
- Decide whether spatial modes matter: Ultra offers Immersion and Cinema; standard 2nd Gen offers TrueSpatial Still, Motion and Cinema.
- Choose your wired requirement: select a 2nd Gen model if USB-C audio is important.
- Check awareness needs: both newer generations document Aware and ActiveSense behavior; standard 2nd Gen also documents ANR Off.
- Check device compatibility: Snapdragon Sound features on Ultra require a certified compatible source device.
- Check comfort and returns: fit cannot be inferred from Bose’s specifications alone.
- Verify the live deal: compare current prices and stock rather than relying on launch figures.
