Choose AirPods first by the fit you will actually wear, then by whether you need active noise cancellation (ANC), and finally by checking that your preferred features work with your Apple devices and software. AirPods can pair with iPhone, Mac, and Apple TV, but pairing does not guarantee every model-specific feature or automatic switching convenience.
Start with the fit you prefer
Apple’s current comparison includes three distinct form factors: open-fit earbuds, in-ear earbuds with silicone tips, and over-ear headphones. Comfort is personal, so treat these as design categories rather than a guarantee that one style will suit everyone. If possible, confirm the fit before buying, especially if you are unsure about silicone tips.

| Model | Fit | Noise control | Consider it if… |
|---|---|---|---|
| AirPods 4 | Open-fit earbuds; no silicone tips | No ANC listed | You prefer an open earbud design and do not need ANC. |
| AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation | Open-fit earbuds; no silicone tips | ANC | You want an open-fit option with noise control rather than an in-ear Pro design. |
| AirPods Pro 3 | In-ear earbuds with silicone tips | ANC and the Pro feature set | You are comfortable with silicone tips and prioritize noise control and Pro features. |
| AirPods Pro 2 | In-ear earbuds with silicone tips | ANC; listed features differ from the current generation | A specific Pro 2 feature or compatibility is what you need; compare its specifications with the newer model. |
| AirPods Max 2 | Over-ear headphones | ANC | You prefer full-size headphones, for example for focused listening or TV at home. |
| AirPods Max | Over-ear headphones | ANC | You want the over-ear form factor; check its exact listed capabilities against Max 2. |
Apple lists the generations separately and distinguishes their features; do not assume that a feature available on one model carries over to another. Check Apple’s AirPods comparison for the specifications of the exact model you are considering. The comparison also lists case types and charging capabilities, so verify those details rather than relying on a family name.

ANC is a useful dividing line, but it does not by itself settle the choice. If you want noise control and dislike silicone tips, AirPods 4 with ANC is the open-fit option in Apple’s lineup. If you are comfortable with an in-ear seal and want the Pro feature set, compare the current Pro model with the prior generation feature by feature. Choose standard AirPods 4 if you want open-fit earbuds without ANC. For listeners who prefer full-size headphones, Max is the over-ear alternative rather than a default choice for every AirPods buyer.

Apple publishes battery and noise-cancellation performance claims, but they are vendor figures tied to specified models and test conditions, not promises of your everyday results. Fit, use, device settings, and other conditions can affect actual experience. For this decision, compare the model features you need instead of treating a single “up to” figure as a universal outcome.

iPhone and Mac
AirPods connect to a Mac over Bluetooth. Apple says that if they are set up with an iPhone and the Mac uses the same Apple Account, they should connect automatically. If they do not, select them in the Mac’s Bluetooth settings. Automatic switching has account and operating-system requirements, and support varies by model; basic Bluetooth playback does not establish that every ecosystem convenience is available.

Apple TV
You can pair AirPods to Apple TV through Settings > Remotes and Devices > Bluetooth. This establishes an audio connection; it is separate from conveniences such as automatic switching. Keep Apple TV and AirPods on compatible current software, and select AirPods as the audio destination when needed. Apple’s AirPods pairing guide covers pairing with Apple devices and notes that some functions may be limited on older Apple software or non-Apple devices.

Advanced features can depend on the exact AirPods generation, companion device, software, firmware, language, and region. Personalized Spatial Audio
Creating a personal audio profile requires an iPhone with a TrueDepth camera. Apple says the profile can sync across supported Apple devices, but the feature still depends on compatible hardware and software. Confirm your devices are supported on Apple’s comparison page.
Live Translation
Live Translation illustrates why the whole setup matters: Apple Support lists supported AirPods models and requires an iPhone 15 Pro or later, iOS 26 or later, Apple Intelligence enabled, Apple’s Translate app, and current AirPods firmware. Feature availability may vary by region and language. Translation models download to the iPhone and processing takes place there. Check Apple’s current Live Translation requirements before buying specifically for this feature.

Hearing-health features
Apple supports Hearing Test and Hearing Aid features on AirPods Pro 2 and later with current firmware when paired with compatible iPhone or iPad software; Hearing Aid is also supported with a compatible Mac. Apple describes these features as intended for people aged 18 or older with perceived mild to moderate hearing loss. Hearing Protection has separate device, software, and regional requirements; Apple says it is not suitable for extremely loud impulse sounds or sustained sounds above 110 dBA. These features are not a substitute for advice from a clinician. Check Apple’s current model comparison for the exact compatibility details.
