For most iPhone owners who want noise cancellation without paying for the top model, AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation are the sensible starting point at Apple’s current U.S. list price of $179. Choose standard AirPods 4 at $129 if you want an open-fit design and do not need noise cancellation. Choose AirPods Pro 3 at $249 if you prefer silicone tips in the ear and want its added workout and hearing-health features. Choose AirPods Max 2 at $549 only if you want over-ear headphones and accept a much higher price and a different form factor.
The right pick depends on fit, whether you need active noise cancellation (ANC), your budget, and which iPhone software you run. The sections below walk through each decision in that order.

How to choose by budget and fit
Lowest price with an open fit: AirPods 4 at $129
Standard AirPods 4 suit people who mostly listen in quiet rooms, on calls, or during short commutes, and who want to stay aware of their surroundings. The open fit leaves the ear canal unsealed, which many people find comfortable for long wear. The trade-off is the absence of ANC, so loud environments such as trains, offices, or aircraft will let more background sound through.

- LIVE TRANSLATION — Communicate across language barriers using Live Translation,* enabled by Apple Intelligence.*
- EXTENDED BATTERY LIFE — Get up to 8 hours of listening time with Active Noise Cancellation on a single charge. Or up to 10 hours in Transparency using the Hearing Aid feature.*
Noise cancellation at a moderate price: AirPods 4 with ANC at $179
This is the default recommendation for most buyers who want ANC but do not want to spend on AirPods Pro 3. It keeps the same open-fit design as standard AirPods 4, so the ear feels unsealed, and it adds Adaptive Audio and Transparency mode for hearing the outside world when you need it. Expect a shorter battery claim with ANC on: up to 4 hours, compared with up to 5 hours for the model without ANC. Apple’s ANC comparisons are Apple’s own claims, measured against the comparison models and test notes it publishes, so treat them as a manufacturer’s assessment rather than an independent ranking.

In-ear comfort and added features: AirPods Pro 3 at $249
AirPods Pro 3 use silicone tips that create a seal in the ear canal. That seal changes both passive isolation and how the earbuds feel, and fit is highly individual. Buyers who find open-fit earbuds fall out of their ears, or who want the workout and hearing-health features Apple advertises for this model, should consider it. Because comfort depends on your ear shape, confirm that the tip fit suits you, and confirm that the features you want are available on your iPhone and in your region before paying the extra $70 over AirPods 4 with ANC.

- HEAR THE WORLD AROUND YOU — The powerful H2 chip comes to AirPods 4. Over-ear preference: AirPods Max 2 at $549
AirPods Max 2 are over-ear headphones rather than earbuds, which makes them a different purchase. They are the right choice if you spend long sessions listening, prefer the over-ear form, or want the lossless and low-latency audio over USB-C that Apple advertises for this model. They cost more than twice as much as AirPods 4 with ANC, so they only make sense if the form factor itself is the reason you are buying.
Questions to settle before you buy
- Fit: open fit, silicone-tip in-ear, or over-ear. This matters more than any other factor, and fit is personal.
- ANC: whether you need it at all, and whether you want the open-fit ANC version or the in-ear version.
- Battery claim conditions: compare figures only for the same model and the same ANC setting.
- Case and charging: AirPods 4 with ANC include a wireless charging case. Check the case that comes with the exact generation you are buying.
- Model-specific extras: workout sensing, hearing-health features, lossless audio, and Live Translation only matter if you will use them.
- Software and region: confirm your iPhone model and iOS version before buying for a feature.

It is also available only in supported languages and regions. Before treating Live Translation as a reason to buy, check:

What the figures do and do not establish
The ANC comparisons and battery figures on this page are Apple’s own claims. No independent side-by-side listening or noise-measurement tests of these four models are covered here. Prices, the product lineup, software features, and regional availability can change without notice, so check the buying page for your country before ordering. Local prices and retailer terms may differ from Apple’s U.S. list prices.
For most buyers, the decision comes down to two questions: do you need ANC, and do you want earbuds that seal in the ear? If you need ANC and want to keep the open fit, AirPods 4 with ANC are the efficient choice. If you need a seal, look at AirPods Pro 3. If neither matters and you want the lowest price, standard AirPods 4 remain the simplest option.
