How to Choose the Best Champions for Your Marvel Contest of Champions Team

There is no single best Marvel Contest of Champions team. The right lineup is the one that meets the current activity’s objective, handles its opponents’ mechanics, fits your restrictions, and can actually be fielded from your roster. Start with the quest or match, identify the class counters and abilities you need, compare the champions you own at their real rank and rarity, then add a synergy only when its documented benefit is worth the team slot.

This approach works because Marvel Contest of Champions is built around collecting, upgrading and managing champions rather than copying one permanent five-champion lineup. The official game listing describes story quests, Alliance Wars, Battlegrounds and Incursions as separate activities, with class advantages, counters and relationship-based synergies shaping team construction.

Why “the best team” changes by activity

A champion who is excellent for a long story quest may be a poor choice for a short Battlegrounds fight, while an Alliance Wars defender can be selected for a purpose that has little to do with your attacking team. Before choosing any champion, write down the activity, the win condition and the restrictions.

Activity First question to answer What your team usually needs to balance
Story quests Which nodes, opponents and quest objectives must I clear? Reliable damage, utility for the path, survivability over multiple fights and enough flexibility for unknown matchups.
Alliance Wars Am I placing defenders or building an attack team for a specific war map? Map and node requirements, defender or attacker purpose, class counters, alliance strategy and the restrictions of that season’s rules.
Battlegrounds Can this champion win or defend efficiently under the current victory conditions? Speed, consistency, matchup value, attack or defense role and the draft or deck rules in effect.
Incursions Can the team survive a run while taking advantage of the rooms and hacks available? Sustain, repeatable utility, compatibility with your partner and a plan for increasingly difficult encounters.

The game’s official listing names these modes but does not declare a universal “best five.” Any guide that gives one fixed answer without asking what you are playing, what you own and which rules are active is leaving out the decision that matters most.

Logitech G F310 Wired Gamepad Controller Console - Blue/Black | Console-like layout, 4-switch D-pad
  • With broad game support, the Logitech Gamepad F310 works with old standbys to today's biggest titles, so it's easy to set up and use with your favorite games.
  • Profiler software allows the gamepad to be programmed to perform keyboard and mouse commands for games without gamepad support.* * Requires software installation.
  • A familiar control layout that doesn't require a learning curve to be able to use, with all the same buttons as on an Xbox 360.
  • The unique floating D-pad rests on four switches-instead of a single pivot point-making it responsive to quick changes in direction.
  • The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.

Start with the roster you can actually use

Theoretical rankings are irrelevant if you do not own the champion, cannot bring it into the mode, or have it at an investment level that makes it competitive. The Google Play listing, updated September 4, 2026, advertises more than 350 champions, but that figure describes the listing at that date; it is not a guarantee that every account or every live game build contains exactly the same number.

Make an availability filter

  • List champions you own in the required class, rarity or mode eligibility.
  • Remove champions locked by a quest rule, ban, roster limit or rank requirement.
  • Note each candidate’s rank, level, signature level and awakening status where those affect the ability you intend to use.
  • Separate champions already developed for the task from champions that would consume scarce catalysts, gold, ISO-8 or other resources before they are ready.

A lower-ranked champion with the correct utility can be the practical answer today, while a highly rated champion may be a longer-term project. Compare what your account can field now, not an idealized future roster.

Read the matchup before choosing a champion

The official listing specifically presents class advantages and counters as strategic tools. Use that system as your first filter, then inspect the opponent’s abilities, nodes and victory conditions. Class advantage alone does not tell you whether a champion can deal with a specific mechanic.

Identify the encounter’s actual demands

  • Opponent effects: Determine whether the fight requires a particular way to remove, avoid or convert a buff, debuff, heal, power effect or other defensive mechanic.
  • Node rules: Read global and local nodes before selecting a counter. A champion that works in an ordinary fight may fail when the node changes timing, damage, power or control.
  • Damage pattern: Decide whether you need burst damage, dependable damage over time, control of the opponent’s power, or safe damage while staying defensive.
  • Survival requirement: For a long quest or Incursions run, recovery and consistency can matter more than the fastest single fight.
  • Role: In Alliance Wars and Battlegrounds, establish whether the champion is attacking, defending or filling a specific draft need.

Consult a current ability reference for the exact opponent and your candidate champions. The available evidence supports the class-counter and synergy systems, but it does not support a complete champion-by-champion counter matrix. Do not assume that a champion is a universal answer merely because it belongs to the favored class.

Compare candidates with the same six questions

When two or more champions can handle the encounter, compare them consistently instead of choosing by reputation. The following framework keeps a tier-list label from overriding the details of your account.

Comparison Questions to ask Evidence you need
Mode and encounter fit Does the champion solve the objective, node and opponent problem in this activity? The current mode rules, path or matchup and the champion’s documented abilities.
Class and utility Does the class advantage help, and does the kit address the specific mechanic rather than only the opponent’s class? Class chart plus current ability descriptions and interaction notes.
Damage and survival Can the champion finish within the time or health limits, and can it repeat the plan without excessive risk? Your actual rank, rarity, awakening and the content’s duration or scoring rules.
Investment Will this option perform now, or require a large resource commitment first? Current rank, signature requirements and the resources available on your account.
Synergy value Does a relationship or affiliation bonus materially improve this plan? The documented synergy effect and the opportunity cost of replacing another slot.
Roster opportunity cost What flexibility do you lose by committing this slot or resources? The other viable champions you would have to bench or delay.

The “winner” can change between accounts. A champion with a stronger theoretical ceiling is not automatically better if your alternative is awakened, ranked and familiar while the higher-ranked option is unbuilt.

Use synergies as an amplifier, not a substitute for a counter

The official listing says that relationships and affiliations can provide synergy bonuses. That makes synergies useful, but the bonus should support a sound matchup rather than dictate the entire team.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When a synergy earns a slot

  • The core champion already answers the encounter and the synergy improves damage, control, safety or consistency in a way you can use.
  • The partner is independently useful for another fight on the path or for the team’s defensive role.
  • The bonus removes a meaningful weakness, such as a timing problem or a repeated failure point.
  • The content rewards a specialized five-champion plan and you are not giving up a required counter to activate it.

When to leave it out

  • The synergy partner cannot handle any relevant fight and occupies a slot needed for a class counter.
  • The bonus is small for the specific objective, while the replacement would add essential utility or survivability.
  • You are building for a mode where the draft, deck or node rules make the relationship difficult to use.

Synergy value is therefore contextual. The game mechanic is official; the recommendation to weigh the bonus against matchup fit is a practical decision rule, not a promise that any particular pairing is optimal.

How to use tier lists without letting them choose for you

A current tier list is useful for discovering candidates, especially when your roster is large, but it is not an official Kabam ranking or a guarantee for your mode. One October 2026 independent fan utility aggregates four creator lists—Vega, Lagacy, MetalSonicDude and Seatin—and displays 330 champions. It says its ratings represent general value across game modes.

Its method converts each creator’s tier into a score and averages the ratings for champions that have been rated. A newly added or newly reviewed champion may initially have only one creator rating, so the apparent precision can be misleading. The page also identifies the rankings as creator opinions.

Read the list as a dated signal

  1. Record the list’s month and version before relying on it.
  2. Use the upper tiers to create a shortlist of champions you already own or could reasonably develop.
  3. Check whether the list’s stated scope—general value across modes—matches your immediate activity.
  4. Verify each shortlisted champion’s current abilities and requirements against the encounter.
  5. Prefer the option that solves your matchup with your available rank and resources.

The October 2026 snapshot shows examples in its S+ tier including Aegon, Archangel, Bastion, Crossbones, Doctor Strange, Hulkling, Human Torch, Jean Grey, Knull, Kushala, Onslaught, Photon and Kingpin, among others. These names describe what that snapshot lists; they do not establish that every one is optimal for every quest, node, account or mode.

A repeatable team-building workflow

Use this sequence whenever you enter new content or your roster changes.

  1. Name the activity and objective. Write “story,” “Alliance Wars attack,” “Alliance Wars defense,” “Battlegrounds” or “Incursions,” then add the current win condition, path and restrictions.
  2. Inspect the opponents and nodes. List the mechanics that can end the fight, prevent damage, limit timing or change scoring. Do not choose from memory if the node rules have changed.
  3. Filter your owned roster. Keep champions with the relevant class advantage, immunity or utility, plus any candidates that solve the mechanic without relying on class advantage.
  4. Confirm the ability interaction. Read current ability descriptions and interaction notes for the specific opponent. Remove candidates whose apparent counter does not address the actual rule.
  5. Compare real account strength. Put rank, rarity, awakening, signature requirements and familiarity beside each candidate. A champion that needs an expensive rank-up should be marked as a future option, not treated as ready today.
  6. Assign roles. Decide which champion handles which opponent or objective. If two champions perform the same job, keep the one with better safety, speed or flexibility for this content.
  7. Test a synergy. Add a relationship or affiliation bonus only after the required counters are covered. Check what champion or utility you sacrifice for the bonus.
  8. Review resource cost. Before ranking anyone, ask whether the champion also solves future content or is a narrow answer to one fight. Spend scarce materials where the account gains the most usable coverage.
  9. Recheck changing content. For competitive modes and newly updated quests, review the current rules and rankings rather than carrying an old lineup forward.

Applying the method to common decisions

“Who should I use for a story quest?”

Build for the entire path, not only the first defender. Identify the nodes, list the mechanics that recur, and select a core that can survive multiple fights. Fill the remaining slots with coverage for the path’s unusual opponents. If a synergy helps only one fight but displaces the champion that handles a recurring node, it is usually the weaker choice for that quest.

“What is the best Battlegrounds team?”

Battlegrounds rewards a pool that can attack and defend under the current rules, not one scripted quest team. Compare candidates on fight speed, reliability, defensive pressure and how many opposing options they force. The correct choice can change with the season’s victory conditions and with the champions available in your deck or draft.

“How should I approach Alliance Wars?”

Separate attack and defense decisions. For attack, map the nodes and assign specific counters before entering. For defense, evaluate how the champion interacts with the node, what attackers are likely to bring and whether the placement creates difficult timing or control problems. Alliance strategy and the current war map matter more than a general tier label.

“What works in Incursions?”

Prioritize repeatable plans. A champion that wins one fight quickly but loses health or relies on a rare setup may be less valuable than one that remains stable through several rooms. Consider the hacks, your partner’s team and the increasing difficulty before committing to a synergy-heavy lineup.

Which champions should you rank up?

Rank-up decisions should follow coverage and account needs rather than a list’s order. Start with champions that solve content you are actively blocked by, then favor options that remain useful in several modes or cover mechanics your roster lacks.

  • Immediate progression: Choose the highest-impact counter for the quest, war map or objective you are attempting now.
  • Account coverage: Prefer a champion that adds a class, utility type or role you do not already have at the same level.
  • Resource efficiency: Compare the cost of raising the champion with the number of fights and modes in which you can use it.
  • Reliability: If two options solve the same problem, favor the one with the safer and more repeatable execution for your skill level.
  • Future flexibility: Keep enough resources for changing content instead of spending everything on a narrow answer.

There is no evidence for a universal win-rate advantage from following a particular team-selection method, so do not treat a tier position as a guaranteed result.

Why recommendations change over time

New champions, balance changes, nodes and mode rules can alter the value of an established lineup. Kabam’s official V59.0 release notes, dated October 2, 2026, announce new champions including Ghost Rider (Robbie Reyes) and Colossus (Age of Apocalypse). The announcement confirms roster change, but it does not provide enough ability detail to infer either champion’s strength or role from the announcement alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That is why the date and version belong beside every recommendation. Recheck ability descriptions, mode rules and community rankings after a major update, and distinguish official game information from independent creator opinion.

PC controls do not determine team quality

The official Steam listing gives the PC release date as June 18, 2025 and states: “Marvel Contest of Champions has been rebuilt for Steam, offering native support for controllers, keyboard, and mouse with customizable bindings.” This confirms that those input methods are supported on Steam. It does not show that a controller is required or that one input method improves champion selection. Choose the control scheme you can use accurately; team quality still comes from matchup analysis and roster fit.

Common mistakes and fixes

Copying a “best starting five”

Problem: The lineup may ignore your mode, nodes or owned roster.
Fix: Use the five-step filter: activity, opponent mechanics, available counters, real investment and synergy value.

Picking by class alone

Problem: Class advantage does not guarantee that the champion handles the opponent’s ability or node.
Fix: Confirm the specific interaction in a current ability reference.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Forcing a synergy

Problem: A relationship bonus can remove a needed counter or reduce flexibility.
Fix: Build the matchup team first, then measure whether the bonus changes the outcome enough to justify its slot.

Treating a tier list as official or permanent

Problem: Independent lists combine opinions, use different update schedules and can lag behind a new version.
Fix: Note the date, understand the methodology and use the list only to create candidates.

Ignoring rank and signature requirements

Problem: A highly rated champion may not perform at an unbuilt rank or without a needed ability level.
Fix: Compare candidates at the investment your account can actually provide.

Spending all resources on one narrow answer

Problem: The champion solves one encounter but leaves the roster unable to handle the next update or mode.
Fix: Consider repeat use, account coverage and upcoming restrictions before committing scarce materials.

A compact decision checklist

  • Have I named the exact activity and current objective?
  • Did I read the opponent and node mechanics rather than relying on memory?
  • Which owned champions have the needed class advantage or utility?
  • Does each candidate address the specific mechanic?
  • What are the candidates’ actual rank, rarity, awakening and signature requirements?
  • Which option is safest and most repeatable for this content?
  • Would a synergy improve the plan enough to replace another slot?
  • Am I using a dated community ranking as a shortlist rather than a verdict?
  • Will this rank-up help beyond one encounter?
