The best ultra-high-definition video pass-through receiver is not automatically the one carrying an “8K” badge. Choose the model whose specific HDMI inputs and outputs support the exact resolution, refresh rate, HDR format and gaming features used by your sources and display. Then confirm that it has enough HDMI connections and the audio channels your room requires.

The specification examples below show why that process matters. A 9.2-channel receiver with seven inputs and three outputs serves a different system from a 5.2-channel model with four inputs and one output, even when both advertise 4K/120Hz and 8K/60Hz pass-through. These are manufacturer specifications, not an independently tested ranking, and the current manual for your regional model remains the final authority.

What video pass-through does in a home theater

In a pass-through system, a source such as a game console, disc player or streaming device connects to an HDMI input on the AV receiver. The receiver extracts and processes the audio, while forwarding the video signal through an HDMI output to a television or projector. Your speakers therefore use the receiver as the audio hub without requiring every source to connect directly to the display.

Pass-through does not mean that the receiver creates 4K or 8K detail. The source must generate the resolution, the receiver must accept and forward it on the selected ports, and the display must support it. A failure at any one of those three points can force a lower resolution, lower refresh rate or reduced HDR mode.

Because manufacturers can implement different capabilities on different connectors, “HDMI 2.1,” “8K” or “4K/120” printed on a product page is only a starting point. Read the input/output table for the exact port you plan to use.

Start with your signal path, not the receiver label

List every source and display

Write down each HDMI source, the display or displays, and the modes you expect to use. Include a current-generation console at 4K/120Hz, a PC capable of 4K/120Hz, a disc player with Dolby Vision, a television, a projector and any second-zone display. Count connections needed now and leave room for likely additions.

Record the required video mode

For each source, note resolution, refresh rate, color depth if specified, HDR format and gaming features. “4K” can mean 24, 30, 60 or 120Hz; those modes have different bandwidth requirements. Similarly, 8K/60Hz is not the same signal as 8K/30Hz. Match the complete mode rather than a single headline number.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Map the ports

Check the receiver’s detailed table to see which inputs accept the desired mode and which outputs can forward it. If a model has one high-bandwidth input but you have two 4K/120Hz consoles, it cannot meet the requirement without reconnecting cables or using a different path. Multiple outputs matter when a television and projector, or a main display and second zone, must remain connected.

How HDMI bandwidth affects 4K/120Hz and 8K/60Hz

The HDMI Licensing Administrator describes HDMI 2.1b as supporting modes including 4K/120Hz and 8K/60Hz, with bandwidth capability up to 48 Gbps. That is a specification ceiling, not a promise that every receiver input reaches 48 Gbps. Some products advertise lower bandwidth while still supporting selected 4K/120Hz or 8K/60Hz formats with particular signal settings.

For example, the Yamaha RX-A6A specifications list 4K120AB and 8K60AB at 40 Gbps. The Denon AVR-X6800H lists up to 40 Gbps pass-through on seven inputs and two outputs for 4K/120Hz and 8K/60Hz. Those figures should be read alongside the manufacturer’s format table and the display’s own limits.

Choose the right cable category

HDMI Licensing Administrator identifies the Ultra High Speed HDMI cable category for configurations requiring up to 48 Gbps and says certified cables carry an official certification label. Use a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable when your planned mode requires that bandwidth, especially for long or in-wall runs.

A more expensive cable does not improve picture quality when an existing cable already carries the required signal reliably. Replace a cable when you see dropouts, sparkles, intermittent black screens or a mode that disappears from the display menu. For long installations, test the complete source-to-receiver-to-display path at the target resolution and refresh rate before closing walls.

Specification-based receiver examples

The following models illustrate different design priorities. They are not ranked test results. Manufacturer pages state the listed capabilities, but they do not establish that every source/display combination will behave identically in practice.

Model Published UHD pass-through HDR and gaming features listed HDMI inputs/outputs Audio channels Best fit by specification
Yamaha RX-A6A 4K120AB and 8K60AB at 40 Gbps Dolby Vision, HDR10+, VRR, ALLM, eARC 7 / 3 9.2 Several sources, more speakers, or multiple displays
Yamaha RX-V6A 4K120AB and 8K60B Dolby Vision, HLG, VRR, ALLM, eARC 7 / 1 7.2 Mid-size system needing many inputs but one display
Denon AVR-S570BT 4K/120Hz and 8K/60Hz Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HLG; VRR and ALLM-related support; Quick Media Switching listed as No 4 / 1 5.2 Simple five-channel system with fewer sources
Denon AVR-X6800H Up to 40 Gbps on seven inputs and two outputs for 8K/60Hz and 4K/120Hz Dolby Vision, HDR10+, Dynamic HDR, ALLM 7 / 2 11.4 Large speaker layouts and multiple high-bandwidth sources or displays

Yamaha RX-A6A: connection headroom

The RX-A6A is the most flexible example for a system that may outgrow a single display. Yamaha lists seven HDMI inputs, three outputs and 9.2 channels, along with 4K120AB and 8K60AB at 40 Gbps. Dolby Vision, HDR10+, VRR, ALLM and eARC are also listed. The three outputs can be useful when a television, projector or second-zone display must remain wired, but verify which output combinations support the mode you need in the current manual.

Yamaha RX-V6A: many inputs, one output

The RX-V6A lists seven HDMI inputs and one output, 7.2 channels, 4K120AB and 8K60B, plus Dolby Vision, HLG, VRR, ALLM and eARC. Its seven inputs can accommodate a substantial source collection, while the single output suits a room with one display. The different 8K notation compared with the RX-A6A is a reminder to compare the exact published mode table rather than assume that two receivers from one manufacturer behave identically.

Denon AVR-S570BT: compact 5.2-channel path

The AVR-S570BT lists four HDMI inputs and one output, 5.2 channels, 4K/120Hz and 8K/60Hz pass-through, Dolby Vision, HDR10+ and HLG. Its table also lists VRR and ALLM-related support, while Quick Media Switching is marked “No.” It is a specification fit for a straightforward system with one display and no more than four HDMI sources, provided those sources use the listed formats.

Denon AVR-X6800H: high-channel-count expansion

The AVR-X6800H lists 11.4 channels, seven HDMI inputs and two outputs. Denon states up to 40 Gbps pass-through on seven inputs and two outputs for 8K/60Hz and 4K/120Hz, with Dolby Vision, HDR10+, Dynamic HDR and ALLM listed as supported features. This combination is aimed at larger speaker layouts or systems requiring two displays. Confirm regional specifications, current availability and the exact output behavior before purchase.

Compare HDR and gaming support separately from resolution

HDR formats

Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HDR10 and HLG are different formats. A receiver that lists one does not necessarily pass through all of them. Compare the formats generated by each source with the formats accepted by the display, then verify that the receiver’s input and output tables include the combination. If a source falls back to standard HDR or SDR when routed through the receiver, test the same source connected directly to the display to identify which link is limiting it.

Variable refresh rate and automatic low-latency mode

VRR synchronizes the display’s refresh behavior with a game source to reduce tearing, while ALLM allows a compatible display to switch to a low-latency mode. Yamaha lists both for the RX-A6A and RX-V6A; the AVR-S570BT specification table lists VRR and ALLM-related support. Enable the features on the source and display as well as the receiver when required. A single unsupported link can disable the feature even if all three devices advertise it.

Quick Media Switching

Quick Media Switching is a separate feature intended to reduce blanking when changing modes. The AVR-S570BT table marks it “No.” Do not infer its availability from 4K/120Hz or 8K support; look for an explicit entry in the specification sheet.

Will my receiver pass through 4K/120Hz? A practical verification procedure

  1. Confirm the source output. Set the console or PC to 4K at 120Hz, then enable its HDR, VRR or ALLM option if required. Check that the source actually reports the selected mode rather than merely offering it in a menu.
  2. Check the receiver manual. Find the HDMI input/output table for your exact model and region. Confirm that the physical input used by the source and the physical output used by the display support 4K/120Hz with the desired HDR and gaming features.
  3. Use a certified cable path. Connect the source to the receiver and the receiver to the display with cables rated for the required bandwidth. Remove switches, splitters and capture devices during the first test.
  4. Enable enhanced HDMI mode. Many receivers and displays have a setting that changes an HDMI port from standard to enhanced, 8K or high-bandwidth operation. Use the label and menu path in the current manuals; do not assume every port is enabled by default.
  5. Select the correct receiver input and display input. An otherwise capable system can appear limited when the cable is connected to a different port from the one listed in the specification table.
  6. Verify the received signal. Use the display’s information panel or the source’s signal-information screen to confirm 3840×2160 at 120Hz and the expected HDR/VRR state. A picture alone does not prove that the full mode is active.
  7. Test one variable at a time. If the signal fails, first lower refresh rate, then disable HDR or VRR, and finally connect the source directly to the display. The step at which the signal returns identifies the limiting feature or link.

Port-planning examples

One television and two 4K/120Hz consoles

You need two receiver inputs that both accept 4K/120Hz, one output that forwards it, and enough additional inputs for disc players or set-top boxes. A receiver with four total inputs may be sufficient only if the rest of the system is simple. Count the actual sources rather than choosing by channel count alone.

Television plus projector

Use a receiver with two outputs that support the required UHD modes. Check whether both outputs can be active simultaneously and whether one output has reduced bandwidth or different HDR support. The RX-A6A lists three outputs and the AVR-X6800H lists two, but the model manual determines how those outputs operate together.

One display, many sources, modest speaker layout

A seven-input, one-output receiver such as the RX-V6A specification example may provide more connection room than a five-channel receiver with four inputs. If your speaker plan is 5.1 or 5.2, prioritize the necessary HDMI count and formats after confirming that the channel layout meets the room’s needs.

Choose audio and room features after the video path

Once the HDMI route is confirmed, compare channel count, speaker-layout support, room-correction tools, subwoofer outputs, pre-outs, network functions and eARC/ARC behavior. A receiver with excellent video specifications can still be a poor fit if it cannot drive or expand the intended speaker system.

  • Channel count: The examples range from 5.2 to 11.4 channels. More channels allow larger layouts, but they do not improve a two-speaker or five-speaker room by themselves.
  • Subwoofer and pre-out needs: Count powered subwoofers and external amplifiers before selecting a chassis. The published channel figure does not describe every pre-out or amplifier assignment.
  • eARC: eARC can return high-quality audio from compatible television apps to the receiver. Confirm eARC on both devices and use the display port identified for it.
  • Room correction: Compare the correction system, microphone procedure and adjustment options for your room. These functions affect setup and speaker integration, not HDMI video bandwidth.
  • Installation space: UHD receivers can run warm. Leave the ventilation clearance specified by the manufacturer and avoid placing another heat-producing component directly on top.

Common pass-through problems and fixes

The display falls back to 60Hz

Check that the source is set to 120Hz, the receiver input supports 4K/120Hz, the output supports it, and the display’s enhanced HDMI mode is enabled. Replace or shorten the cable path, then test the source directly on the display.

HDR disappears through the receiver

Compare the source’s HDR format with the receiver and display tables. Try a different HDMI input listed for that format and remove intermediary devices. If direct connection restores HDR, the receiver port or configuration is the constraint.

The screen intermittently goes black

Intermittent black screens usually indicate a marginal link, an incorrect high-bandwidth setting or a device that cannot maintain the selected mode. Re-seat connectors, use certified Ultra High Speed cables, reduce unnecessary adapters and test at a lower mode to isolate the failure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Only one of several sources works

Different inputs may have different capabilities. Move the source to an input explicitly listed for its mode, and verify that the output selected for the display has the same support. Keep a simple port map beside the equipment so each source remains connected to a known-capable input.

Audio works but video does not

Audio success does not prove UHD video pass-through. Confirm the display input, receiver video output assignment and source resolution separately. A receiver can decode audio while forwarding a video mode that the display or cable cannot accept.

A decision framework for selecting your receiver

  1. Define the highest required mode. Write the exact combination, such as 4K/120Hz with Dolby Vision and VRR, or 8K/60Hz with HDR10+.
  2. Filter by port capability. Reject models whose required input or output does not list that combination. Do not substitute the general HDMI version for a port-level specification.
  3. Count connections. Include every current source, every display and any planned addition. Check simultaneous-output behavior for television/projector systems.
  4. Match the audio system. Select channel count, subwoofer connections, pre-outs and room-correction features for the actual speaker layout.
  5. Plan cabling and installation. Use the appropriate certified cable category, allow ventilation and confirm that cable lengths work at the target bandwidth.
  6. Validate before final installation. Test each source at its intended resolution, refresh rate, HDR mode and gaming feature before concealing cables or mounting equipment.

Applied to the examples here, the RX-A6A and AVR-X6800H offer the most published connection and channel headroom; the RX-V6A emphasizes seven inputs with one display output; and the AVR-S570BT is the simplest 5.2-channel, four-input path. None is universally “best.” The correct choice is the one whose documented ports, formats and audio capacity match your system without paying for connections or channels you will not use.
