Choose storage for AI inference as a hierarchy, not as a contest between interchangeable drives. Keep model execution state, active weights, KV cache and other latency-sensitive data in accelerator memory and DRAM. Keep persistent models, datasets and capacity-heavy tiers on NVMe SSDs. Consider Z-NAND or Z-SSD only as a specific, verified enterprise product option, and treat Samsung’s newer zNAND-O as a development concept rather than a retail choice.
The correct tier depends on the complete serving path: model size, batch and context, concurrency, read pattern, tail-latency target, bandwidth, endurance, power, cooling, host platform and software support. A fast SSD can reduce model-load time or support a measured cache/offload design, but it does not become DRAM merely because it uses NVMe.

The storage hierarchy an inference system actually uses
Inference moves data through several layers. Accelerator memory holds tensors and execution state closest to the GPU or other accelerator. Host DRAM supplies additional working space and staging capacity. Persistent storage holds model files, tokenizer data, retrieval indexes, checkpoints and datasets. Data may travel between those layers during startup, cache fills, retrieval and model swaps.

That description is useful because it prevents a common design error: treating a storage interface as a substitute for working memory. Even a high-end NVMe drive still depends on its controller, firmware, PCIe path, operating-system queues, host CPU, filesystem and application data movement.

Accelerator memory and DRAM
Use accelerator memory and DRAM for data that the model needs repeatedly while serving requests. This includes active weights, activations, attention state, KV cache, batching buffers and latency-sensitive retrieval data. Capacity and cost are the constraints, but moving a hot working set out to an SSD can add enough latency and jitter to undermine the target response time.
HBM is normally integrated into an accelerator platform rather than installed as a generic retail upgrade. Samsung’s 2026 HBM4 material reports up to 3,300 GB/s; that is a vendor figure for HBM4 and context for accelerator-memory bandwidth, not a DRAM or NVMe result and not an apples-to-apples comparison with Z-NAND.
NVMe SSDs
NVMe SSDs are the normal persistent tier for model repositories, datasets, vector indexes, logs and checkpoints. They can also be used for caching, staged loading or selected offload paths when measurements show that the extra data movement is acceptable. Capacity is their major advantage, but application-visible latency is determined by the entire path rather than by the drive’s sequential number alone.

Samsung’s Z-NAND and the historical SZ985 Z-SSD were positioned as specialized enterprise flash intended to narrow the latency gap between DRAM and conventional NVMe SSDs. The available product material is historical and vendor-authored. It explains the intended role of a low-latency flash tier, but old comparisons should not be presented as current results for today’s flash products.
zNAND-O
Samsung introduced zNAND-O at FMS 2026 as a next-generation NAND direction for edge AI. Samsung describes versions as in development and presents the technology as a concept. It is therefore not an ordinary, generally available retail alternative to DRAM or an NVMe SSD.
DRAM, Z-NAND and NVMe compared
| Tier | Best-supported role | Strengths to investigate | Limitations and checks |
|---|---|---|---|
| DRAM and accelerator memory | Active working set, model execution state and latency-sensitive data | Closest practical location to the CPU or GPU; very high bandwidth; predictable access when the working set fits | Capacity and cost limits; exact performance depends on the platform and memory configuration. HBM is generally part of an accelerator platform, not a generic upgrade. |
| Z-NAND or Z-SSD | Specialized enterprise flash tier proposed between DRAM and conventional NVMe storage | Low-latency design intent and a possible intermediate tier for carefully measured workloads | Much of the concrete evidence is historical and vendor-authored. Confirm current availability, firmware, host qualification and software support before buying. |
| NVMe SSD | Persistent model and dataset storage; selected cache or offload tiers | High capacity, standard NVMe software paths and enterprise products aimed at AI and HPC servers | End-to-end latency includes controller, host, software and data movement. Check endurance, thermal behavior, form factor, queue-depth behavior and platform support. |
| zNAND-O | Developing NAND direction for edge-AI designs | Samsung reports goals for higher density, high I/O and lower latency than conventional NAND | Concept and development status. Vendor design targets are not independent measurements or proof of broad availability. |
Start by identifying what is slow
Before selecting a device, divide the data path into distinct jobs. “The model is slow” is not a storage diagnosis; model loading, token generation, retrieval and cache eviction can have completely different bottlenecks.
- Model loading: Measure the time to read weights from persistent storage, decode or transform them, copy them through host memory and place them in accelerator memory. A large sequential read may dominate cold-start time.
- Active weights and execution state: Determine which tensors must remain in accelerator memory and which can reside in host DRAM. Include the model, batch size, context length, precision, framework buffers and concurrency.
- KV cache and other working state: Estimate how the cache grows as context and simultaneous requests increase. If it spills, measure the resulting transfers rather than assuming SSD capacity solves the problem.
- Retrieval and feature data: Separate vector-index lookups, metadata reads and large document fetches. These often create small random reads under concurrency, unlike model loading.
- Archive and training-adjacent data: Keep infrequently accessed datasets, checkpoints and model versions on capacity-oriented storage unless startup or swap frequency justifies a faster tier.
Classify the observed bottleneck as capacity, bandwidth, latency, queueing, CPU overhead or data movement. The classification determines the fix. More SSD capacity cannot repair an accelerator-memory shortage; a lower-latency flash device cannot compensate for an undersized PCIe link or a serialized software pipeline.

Check accelerator and DRAM capacity before buying flash
Calculate the working set for the intended model and serving policy. Include weight storage at the selected precision, runtime overhead, activations, KV cache, batching buffers, tokenizer and retrieval components. Then test the largest context and concurrency that the service must support, not only a single short prompt.
- If the working set fits in accelerator memory, keep the hot path there and use DRAM and NVMe for staging and persistence.
- If it does not fit, determine whether reducing precision, changing batching, sharding across accelerators or adding host DRAM is acceptable before considering SSD offload.
- If the model library is large but only a few models are active, store the library on NVMe and stage selected models into DRAM and accelerator memory.
- If requests repeatedly trigger model swaps, measure swap frequency and cold-start impact. A faster persistent tier may help, but reducing swaps can be more effective.
Do not describe SSD capacity as “memory” in an architecture document. That wording hides the latency and software work required to move data into an address space the accelerator can use.
When NVMe SSD is the right choice
Persistent models, datasets and indexes
NVMe is the default starting point for persistent inference data. Choose capacity for the active model set plus datasets, indexes, checkpoints, temporary files and growth. Leave free space for over-provisioning and maintenance rather than filling a drive to its nominal limit.
Enterprise server versus workstation
Enterprise NVMe drives are designed and qualified for sustained server workloads, higher write endurance, predictable thermal behavior and platform management features. A consumer NVMe SSD can be sensible in a workstation that stores local model files and datasets, but it is not equivalent to a data-center eSSD. The choice should follow duty cycle, write volume, cooling and qualification requirements rather than interface name alone.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCurrent enterprise example
Samsung announced mass production of the PM1763 on July 8, 2026, describing it as a PCIe 6.0 enterprise SSD for AI and HPC servers. Samsung’s example says a 40 GB large-language-model transfer can take approximately 1.4 seconds. That is Samsung’s use case and stated figure, not a universal model-load time or an independent benchmark; actual startup also includes filesystem work, decoding, host copies and accelerator transfer.
Samsung’s 2026 material also references the PM1753 in an inference-storage architecture. The information available here does not establish general retail availability or a direct, controlled performance comparison between PM1753 and PM1763, so treat the reference as an architecture example rather than a purchasing verdict.
Specifications that matter more than a headline number
- Capacity: Size for the model repository, active datasets, indexes, checkpoints, temporary staging and expected growth.
- Read pattern: Establish whether the workload is large sequential reads, small random reads, mixed reads and writes, or bursts during model swaps.
- Tail latency: Measure p95 and p99 behavior under the actual concurrency. Average latency can conceal stalls that users experience as delayed responses.
- Queue depth and IOPS: Check behavior at the queue depths generated by the serving stack. A specification measured at a queue depth your application never reaches is not predictive.
- Endurance: Account for cache churn, checkpoints, logs and index updates. Read-mostly inference and write-heavy pipelines have different endurance needs.
- Power and cooling: PCIe 5.0 and PCIe 6.0 devices can produce substantial heat. Confirm heatsinks, airflow, slot spacing and sustained performance after thermal throttling.
- Form factor and host support: Verify U.2, EDSFF, add-in-card or M.2 compatibility, PCIe lane allocation, firmware support and operating-system drivers.
- Data path: Confirm that the framework, filesystem and orchestration layer can issue the required asynchronous I/O and transfers. A capable drive cannot accelerate a serialized software path.
What Z-NAND can and cannot tell you today
The historical SZ985 Z-SSD material is useful for understanding why a vendor proposed a flash tier between DRAM and conventional NVMe: reduce latency for data that is too large or too persistent for DRAM. It is not sufficient evidence for a current, universal ranking against modern enterprise SSDs.

Treat Z-NAND as a product-specific procurement question. Ask whether the exact drive is still supplied, whether your server vendor qualifies it, which firmware and driver versions are required, and whether your workload has measured benefit at its real queue depth and concurrency. Confirm replacement availability and support duration as carefully as raw latency.

A Z-SSD may be relevant when a platform has a supported low-latency flash slot and a hot dataset that does not fit economically in DRAM. It is not automatically useful for token generation, because token latency may be dominated by accelerator computation, synchronization, network retrieval or software scheduling rather than storage access.
How to interpret zNAND-O claims
Samsung’s FMS 2026 material describes zNAND-O as a concept with versions in development for edge AI. Samsung Semiconductor presents a read-latency target below 3 microseconds and bandwidth of 200–400 GB/s. Those are Samsung-reported design goals, not demonstrated retail-SSD benchmarks or independent measurements.
Do not build a purchase plan around zNAND-O until a specific, available product has a part number, qualification information, interface, endurance data, power envelope, software support and independent workload results. Its intended placement may be attractive for edge systems, but roadmap positioning does not establish availability, price or application-level benefit.
Benchmark the complete serving path
Storage benchmarking should reproduce the way the inference service actually reads data. A synthetic sequential test can be useful for checking a device, but it cannot establish token latency or prove that offload will help.
- Define test cases: Include cold model load, warm restart, model swap, retrieval reads, cache growth and the normal request mix.
- Record the platform: Document accelerator model and memory, host CPU and DRAM, PCIe generation and lane allocation, filesystem, driver, runtime, firmware and cooling.
- Vary concurrency: Test one request and the target concurrent load. Record queue depth, IOPS, bandwidth and p50, p95 and p99 latency.
- Measure every transfer: Time storage-to-host reads, host staging, host-to-accelerator copies, decompression or conversion and synchronization. If the platform supports direct transfers, measure them separately.
- Test cold and warm states: A page-cache hit can make a storage path appear faster than a cold start. Report whether data was already in DRAM or accelerator memory.
- Check thermal steady state: Run long enough to expose throttling and observe power, temperature and sustained throughput.
- Compare application outcomes: Report startup time, request latency, throughput and error or timeout behavior, not only device-level bandwidth.
NVIDIA’s technical blog, dated January 25, 2023, describes GPUDirect Storage as a way to transfer directly between GPU memory and NVMe or NVMe-oF storage. A compatible direct path can reduce host copies, but the benefit depends on supported hardware, drivers, filesystem, framework and workload. It must be measured in the deployed stack.

Common design mistakes and fixes
Using SSD capacity to hide an accelerator-memory shortfall
Symptom: The system technically loads a model but response latency becomes erratic as context or concurrency rises.
Recommended Free Tools
Fix: Quantify the working set, reduce precision or concurrency, change sharding, add accelerator memory or add host DRAM before evaluating SSD offload. Measure the complete transfer path if offload remains necessary.
Choosing by sequential throughput alone
Symptom: A drive reaches its advertised GB/s in a synthetic test, yet retrieval or model swapping remains slow.
Fix: Benchmark the actual read size, queue depth, concurrency, filesystem and software stack. Include p95 and p99 latency and CPU overhead.
Assuming an old Z-SSD comparison is current
Symptom: A historical brochure is used to claim that every Z-NAND device beats current NVMe products.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix: Date the claim, identify the exact products compared and obtain current, controlled measurements on the target platform. If those checks are unavailable, describe Z-NAND only as a historical or product-specific option.

Treating a roadmap as a purchasable part
Symptom: A design lists zNAND-O without a supplier, part number, qualification or delivery schedule.
Fix: Mark it as a future possibility and design the deployable system around available DRAM and NVMe. Revisit the decision when complete product evidence exists.
Ignoring thermal throttling
Symptom: Cold-start tests look good, but sustained loads trigger slower reads and longer tails.
Fix: Validate airflow, heatsinks, slot spacing and power limits, then repeat a steady-state benchmark.
Forgetting persistence and recovery
Symptom: A fast tier improves startup but a failure, firmware replacement or capacity expansion becomes difficult.
Fix: Plan replicas or backups for models and indexes, document firmware and driver dependencies, and include replacement lead time and support duration in the decision.
Cost and total platform fit
Compare more than purchase price. The relevant cost includes usable capacity, DRAM and accelerator-memory expansion, host adapters, power, cooling, endurance-related replacement, server qualification and engineering time for the software path.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Use the least expensive tier that meets the measured latency and throughput target for each data class.
- Do not pay for extreme flash latency when the workload is accelerator-bound or when data is already cached in DRAM.
- Do not undersize DRAM to buy more SSD capacity if that causes repeated cache misses or host-to-accelerator transfers.
- For enterprise deployments, value predictable tail latency, telemetry, firmware support and endurance alongside nominal bandwidth.
- For workstations, verify that the motherboard exposes enough PCIe lanes and that the drive can be cooled under sustained reads before selecting a high-end model.
A procurement checklist
- Write down model sizes, precision, context limits, batch size and maximum concurrent requests.
- Separate active weights, KV cache, retrieval data, model files, checkpoints and archives.
- Measure accelerator-memory and DRAM headroom at the largest supported workload.
- Specify the required cold-start, warm-start, throughput and p99-latency targets.
- Choose NVMe capacity and endurance for persistent data, then verify form factor, PCIe lanes, firmware and cooling.
- Consider Z-NAND or Z-SSD only after confirming a current, supported product and a workload-specific benchmark.
- Keep zNAND-O in the roadmap category until Samsung or another supplier provides an available, qualified product with complete specifications.
- Benchmark the deployed software path, including host effects, queue depth, concurrency, cache state and storage-to-accelerator transfer.
- Document backup, replacement, support and thermal plans before production approval.
Bottom line
Put hot inference state where the processor can reach it: accelerator memory first, DRAM next. Use NVMe SSDs for persistent models, datasets and measured cache or offload tiers. Z-NAND is best understood as a specialized, historically documented enterprise-flash idea that requires current product verification. zNAND-O is a developing Samsung concept, not a generally available purchase. The winning choice is the one that meets application-level latency and throughput targets on the complete, cooled and supported platform—not the one with the biggest isolated bandwidth figure.
