How to Choose Steam Equipment for Soil Disinfestation on a Strawberry Farm

By Freedom251 Team · · 13 min read

The right steam system is determined by the strawberry bed you must treat, not by the boiler’s advertised steam output. Measure bed width and shape, decide how deep the root zone must be disinfested, then select an injector, shank, distribution-line, or bed-mixing machine that can deliver uniform heat at that depth. Before committing to a purchase or contractor, verify temperatures at several soil depths, the time those temperatures are held, daily field capacity, energy consumption, labor, maintenance, and total cost under your farm’s conditions.

No published comparison establishes one universally superior machine or a current market price. The evidence consists of field demonstrations, nursery trials, engineering studies, and historical economic analyses. Use it to build a specification and acceptance test for your farm rather than to treat any single number as a guarantee.

Start with the bed, the crop, and the pest target

Steam equipment works only when heat reaches the soil volume that contains the strawberry roots and the organisms you are trying to suppress. A high-capacity boiler can still produce an inadequate treatment if steam bypasses the bed, condenses near the surface, or fails to hold temperature at the lower root-zone boundary.

California’s Department of Pesticide Regulation identifies unresolved questions about how much of a raised bed needs treatment, how to improve fuel efficiency, and how much area can be treated per day. Those questions are reasons to measure your own beds and validate performance, not reasons to select equipment by boiler size alone. The agency’s nonfumigant strawberry action plan provides that broader context.

Match the machine configuration to your bed layout

Mobile applicator that injects steam while mixing and shaping

A tractor-drawn applicator can inject steam into loosened soil while a bed shaper or mixing implement reforms the bed. This approach treats and prepares the bed in one pass, which can be attractive when your normal bed-forming operation already uses a tractor and when the applicator covers the full bed profile.

A USDA Agricultural Research Service demonstration evaluated the Ferrari Sterilter mobile applicator. Its frontal plates helped heat soil to 30 cm, and the report says the system reached about 70°C in 5 to 7 minutes in that demonstration. The heating time refers to the machine’s reported performance; it is not the same as holding every point in the soil at the target temperature for the required treatment period. The same abstract reported 76% lower initial weed density in steam-treated plots than in untreated controls, a result from that demonstration rather than a universal expectation. Read the USDA ARS demonstration abstract.

Ask whether the mixing action reaches the shoulders and lower corners of your bed. A unit that heats only the center strip may leave untreated soil where roots or pathogens remain.

Injection shanks or nozzles

Shank systems place steam at defined depths and positions. They can be useful when beds have consistent dimensions and when you need to target a deep root zone without fully reworking the bed. Nursery research describes a compact applicator injecting at 12 inches across an 80-inch set of shanks. That is evidence of a tested layout, not confirmation that the same machine is currently available or suitable for your field.

Shanks require careful matching of spacing, depth, and travel speed. Steam may condense around each injection point unless the soil is prepared for penetration and the system supplies enough heat for the full width. The shanks must also clear stones, buried drip lines, and compacted layers without changing depth as the tractor moves.

USDA nursery projects describe steam injection through shanks as part of integrated approaches to strawberry soil disinfestation. The integration project description and the high-efficiency steam project show the type of injector and measurement questions that should appear in a specification.

Bed-installed distribution lines and emitters

Lines installed in the bed can distribute steam through emitters positioned across a fixed treatment zone. USDA project designs proposed lines 12 inches apart with emitters 10 inches apart in one study and 8-inch emitter spacing at a specified installation depth in another. These are experimental layouts, not universal installation requirements.

A line-based system may fit a farm that treats a predictable bed layout and can install, remove, protect, and maintain the lines. It is less convenient when bed geometry changes frequently or when lines interfere with cultivation and planting. Your design must account for condensation, pressure losses, connections, cleaning, and the time needed to install and retrieve the network.

See the USDA project descriptions for the proposed distribution-line arrangements and their treatment objectives: Systems to Disinfest Soil with Heat for Flower and Strawberry Production and Solarization and Steam Heat Combined to Control Soil Pests in Flower and Strawberry.

Solarization combined with steam

Solarization uses plastic and solar heat, with steam supplying additional heat when weather or depth makes solarization alone insufficient. The research objective is to reduce energy demand while still disinfesting the target soil volume. Performance depends on solar radiation, air temperature, wind, plastic sealing, soil moisture, and the timing of steam input.

Treat this as a site-specific combination to test, not as a proven energy-saving guarantee. Ask for data from soils and climates comparable to yours and measure temperatures beneath the plastic at the depths that matter.

Humid hot-air applicators

A USDA project proposed evaluating a commercial hot humid-air applicator because preliminary reasoning suggested a lower energy cost per acre might be possible. The project description states a research objective and hypothesis; it does not prove superior control, lower current operating cost, or suitability for commercial strawberry fields. Include humid hot air only if you can run a controlled trial with the same multi-depth temperature and efficacy measurements used for steam.

Specify temperature in the soil, not at the boiler

Boiler temperature, hose temperature, and a surface thermometer do not establish that the entire bed received a lethal exposure. Field and nursery studies used probes at multiple depths: USDA field work monitored 8, 15, and 30 cm, while nursery work monitored 4, 8, 10, and 12 inches. Use enough probes to reveal cold spots across the bed width as well as down the profile.

Published treatment targets are study protocols

Reported target Where it appears How to interpret it
70°C for 20 minutes USDA project description and ARS field context A project or trial target, not a guarantee for every pest, soil, or applicator.
70°C for 30 minutes Separate USDA project description A different project protocol; do not merge it with the 20-minute target.
About 70°C reached in 5–7 minutes; soil heated to 30 cm 2010 ARS mobile-applicator demonstration Reported equipment and demonstration performance. Reaching temperature is not the same as holding it for treatment.
Above 60°C for approximately 60 minutes to 25 cm 2022 California nursery research record A result reported for applications at two locations under that study’s conditions.

The 2010 ARS abstract states that steam can kill soilborne pests when soil temperatures are raised to 70°C for 20 minutes, but the exact requirement varies with the target organism, soil conditions, and treatment design. Review the abstract before translating its figures into a purchase specification.

Run a field acceptance test

  1. Prepare the bed exactly as it will be treated. Use the intended moisture, shape, mulch arrangement, and irrigation configuration. Record ambient conditions and starting soil temperature.
  2. Install calibrated probes. Place sensors at several depths, such as 8, 15, and 30 cm or the equivalent depths that bracket your root zone. Add sensors near both shoulders and the centerline; a single center probe can hide edge failures.
  3. Record the machine settings. Log travel speed, injection depth, shank or emitter spacing, steam pressure, boiler output, fuel consumption, water use, and mixing or bed-shaping settings.
  4. Measure the complete heat curve. Capture the time to reach the target, the time each probe remains at or above it, and the cooling rate after steam stops. Do not substitute the boiler’s display for soil data.
  5. Repeat across the field. Test at the beginning, middle, and end of a run and in representative soil textures. Include turns, starts, stops, and any slope where travel speed changes.
  6. Check biological or weed outcomes where practical. Pair temperature records with the pest, pathogen, or weed measurement relevant to your production goal. A hot reading without an outcome measure cannot prove control.
  7. Set pass/fail criteria before the demonstration. Specify the minimum depth, hold time, allowable cold spots, maximum fuel use, and acceptable daily area. Put the data file and calibration records in the contract or purchase agreement.
  8. Retest after maintenance or seasonal changes. Nozzle wear, blocked emitters, altered soil moisture, and different bed dimensions can change the temperature profile even when the operator uses the same control settings.

Compare field capacity and energy, not just treatment temperature

USDA engineering work highlights high energy demand and the difficulty of treating large areas with existing field applicators. A small unit may meet a temperature target yet fail your planting schedule because it treats too few beds per day or requires excessive handling of water and fuel.

Historical figures that help frame questions

Figure Context and qualification
0.25 ha per 10 hours Historical field-steaming rate reported in a 2016 review; tied to the equipment and assumptions discussed there, not a current production guarantee.
$12,000 per hectare Historical estimated cost in the same 2016 review context; not a present-day quote.
$3,848 per acre Estimated machine, fuel, and labor cost for a particular California single-bed prototype reported in 2014 proceedings.
1,561 gallons of propane per acre Fuel use reported for that experimental setup, not a general equipment specification.
163 MJ/m³ applied Energy figure reported for the same experimental field study.
One 52-inch bed per pass Configuration of the described tractor-towed prototype with a propane-fired 100 HP generator, bed shaper/rototiller, injection shanks, and nozzles.

The economics review is useful for understanding why throughput and engineering constraints matter, but its figures date from 2016 and earlier. Read Fennimore and Goodhue’s review for its original assumptions. The prototype figures come from a specific California research setup and should not be compared with a current quotation until fuel prices, labor, depreciation, acreage, and machine performance are updated. See the USDA ARS publication record for the Samtani study.

Mississippi State University Extension notes that steaming cost depends on steamer size, starting soil temperature, wind and ambient conditions, steam penetration, and field size. Use those variables in your own operating model rather than applying a single per-acre number. See Soil Steaming 101.

Cost category Questions to answer
Capital What are the machine, boiler, generator, shanks, bed shaper, hoses, probes, and safety equipment costs? What residual value and useful life are assumed?
Energy Which fuel or electrical source is required? Is consumption measured per hour, bed, acre, or cubic metre of soil? How does starting soil temperature change demand?
Labor How many operators are needed for driving, boiler operation, fueling, monitoring, and line handling? What training and certifications are required?
Maintenance What are the service intervals for burners, pumps, valves, hoses, emitters, shanks, and sensors? Are replacement parts available locally?
Downtime risk What happens if a boiler, generator, hose, or probe fails during the narrow treatment window? Is a loaner or field service available?
Infrastructure Do you need a larger tractor, water tank, fuel storage, transport trailer, electrical service, or a level staging area?
Opportunity cost How does treatment speed affect bed preparation, fumigation alternatives, transplanting, and harvest scheduling?

Choose by farm scenario

Farm condition Configuration to investigate first Acceptance questions
Uniform beds, deep target zone, and a need to reform beds in the same pass Mobile applicator with injection and mixing or bed shaping Does mixing reach the shoulders and the specified depth? Can it maintain uniform temperature while shaping?
Consistent bed dimensions where deep placement matters more than full-bed reworking Injection shanks or nozzles Do spacing and depth match the root zone? How are cold areas between shanks detected?
Fixed bed geometry and willingness to install a temporary network Bed-installed distribution lines and emitters What installation labor, pressure balancing, cleaning, and retrieval are required?
Strong solar conditions and a goal of reducing steam energy Solarization combined with supplemental steam Can probes demonstrate target temperatures at depth under local weather and plastic-sealing conditions?
Interest in lower-energy alternatives with capacity for trials Humid hot air alongside a steam control Does an independent trial show equivalent depth, hold time, pest control, and field capacity?

This table is a decision framework, not a ranking. The same farm may need different equipment for nursery beds, mature production beds, and blocks with different soil textures.

Questions to put in a supplier or contractor specification

  • What bed widths, heights, and spacing can the machine treat without changing the required profile?
  • What injection, mixing, or emitter layout is used, and how is uniformity demonstrated?
  • What maximum verified treatment depth has been measured in soil similar to ours?
  • Can the system log temperatures at multiple depths and across the bed width?
  • What soil moisture range and starting temperature are assumed?
  • What are measured fuel, water, and electrical requirements at the quoted field capacity?
  • How many beds or acres per day are realistic after turns, refueling, setup, and maintenance?
  • What tractor power, operator training, ventilation, hot-surface protection, and emergency shutoffs are required?
  • Which parts are wear items, and what is the expected delivery time for replacements?
  • What test data, calibration records, and field references can be supplied for strawberry soil?
  • Does the quote include probes, data logging, installation, transport, cleanup, and follow-up validation?
  • For a custom application, who is responsible if the agreed depth or hold time is not achieved?

Common failure modes and fixes

The surface is hot but the lower bed is cool

Likely causes include shallow injectors, excessive travel speed, dry or compacted soil, insufficient mixing, or steam condensing before reaching depth. Recheck probe placement, reduce speed within the machine’s safe operating range, correct soil preparation and moisture, and verify that injectors or lines reach the specified depth.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

One side of the bed misses the target

Uneven bed shape, blocked emitters, unequal hose lengths, a sloping field, or a center-only sensor can hide the problem. Add shoulder probes, inspect and balance the distribution system, and repeat the test at different positions in the field.

The machine reaches temperature briefly but cannot hold it

Short peaks may result from inadequate steam flow, heat loss through hoses, rapid condensation, or insufficient soil moisture. Treat the hold time as a separate acceptance criterion from time-to-temperature and have the operator provide the complete temperature trace.

Daily acreage is far below the estimate

The estimate may exclude filling, turns, line handling, probe setup, fuel delivery, and maintenance. Recalculate usable field capacity from a full operating day and identify the bottleneck before increasing boiler size.

Fuel use is unexpectedly high

Starting soil temperature, wind, ambient conditions, soil moisture, penetration depth, and field size all affect cost. Shield exposed hoses where safe, correct leaks and blocked nozzles, improve logistics, and compare measured fuel per treated bed rather than fuel per boiler hour alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Records cannot demonstrate treatment

A boiler display or one surface thermometer is insufficient. Use calibrated multi-depth sensors, record location and time, and preserve the raw data with machine settings and soil conditions.

Use research as a test plan, not a product ranking

Steam, solarization-plus-steam, and humid hot air remain active areas of strawberry research. A September 2026 University of California, Santa Cruz report describes a California collaboration exploring soil steam disinfestation as a non-chemical alternative, but participation in a project does not establish a commercial product, service territory, warranty, or price. Read the university’s September 18, 2026 report.

Before buying, leasing, or hiring a rig, run a measured demonstration on the hardest bed and soil condition you expect to treat. Require the operator to show temperature at the deepest target point, across the full bed width, for the complete hold time, together with field capacity and resource-use records. Then compare the resulting cost per successfully treated acre with the value of meeting your planting schedule and pest-management objective.

Pre-purchase checklist

  • Bed dimensions and treatment depth are documented.
  • The selected injection, shank, line, or mixing layout covers the entire target soil volume.
  • Multi-depth, across-bed temperature monitoring is included.
  • Acceptance targets specify temperature, hold time, depth, uniformity, and biological checks where feasible.
  • Field capacity includes setup, turns, fueling, maintenance, and downtime.
  • Fuel, water, labor, maintenance, and infrastructure costs are calculated for the farm’s conditions.
  • Quotes identify assumptions, exclusions, service coverage, parts support, and responsibilities for failed validation.
  • A pilot run has been scheduled before full-acreage commitment.
