Choose solar panels by comparing complete, itemized system proposals against your roof and local utility rules—not by picking the module with the highest efficiency rating. Ask each installer for modeled annual electricity production in kilowatt-hours, the assumptions behind that estimate, the exact equipment and warranty documents, and the full cash and financing costs.
How do I choose solar panels?
A panel is only one part of a home solar system. Roof conditions, inverter configuration, installation quality, utility compensation for exported electricity, and the price you pay all affect whether a proposal suits your home. A useful comparison holds those assumptions as consistent as possible.

- Confirm the site can support the system. Review roof age, orientation, shading, repair needs, local permits, and electrical infrastructure. If the roof may need replacement soon, account for the cost and disruption of removing and reinstalling the array.
- Request a site-specific production estimate. Compare estimated annual kilowatt-hours for your actual roof, not module efficiency in isolation. Ask what the model assumes about solar resource, shade, temperature, system size, and equipment. The U.S. Department of Energy Federal Energy Management Program points to PVWatts for estimating grid-connected photovoltaic generation.
- Verify the equipment and system scope. Record the proposed DC system size, module and inverter make and model, and whether a battery is included. Confirm the contract names the equipment that will actually be installed.
- Compare the full economics. Put cash price, financing terms and total financing cost, ongoing charges, incentives assumed, and expected utility bill effects side by side. Check local tariffs, net-metering or export-credit policies, and interconnection requirements; these can change savings and payback.
- Read the warranty documents and forecast assumptions. Separate panel product coverage from installer workmanship coverage, then compare the degradation assumption in the financial forecast with the module’s written output warranty.
- Get multiple itemized proposals. Compare offers with the same system scope and assumptions where possible. A lower panel price is not a sound value comparison if the system size, production estimate, financing, or included work differs.
DOE/FEMP procurement guidance recommends screening the site and coordinating with the utility, including checking interconnection capacity, electrical infrastructure, tariffs, incentives, and net-metering policy. A qualified installer should comply with local building, fire, and electrical codes; the DOE homeowner guide also calls for inspection by a certified electrician.

What solar panel efficiency do I need?
Efficiency is the fraction of sunlight a module converts into electricity under specified test conditions. It is not a direct estimate of your home’s annual generation or electric-bill savings. The U.S. Department of Energy Federal Energy Management Program states: “Performance ratings of PV modules are measured under standard test conditions (1,000 W/m2 of sunlight; 25°C cell temperature).” It cautions that real-world irradiance is usually lower and cell temperatures typically higher.

Higher efficiency can be useful when roof area is limited, but it does not by itself prove that a panel will produce the most electricity on your roof or deliver the best value. Orientation, shading, local solar resource, climate, system sizing, inverter configuration, and utility rules all matter. Compare modeled annual kilowatt-hours and installed price together. The sources cited here do not establish a current authoritative residential efficiency range or a model-by-model ranking; use current manufacturer datasheets and the proposal’s production model for shortlisted equipment.
How long do solar panels last, and what is a good warranty?
Do not treat a warranty duration as a prediction that a panel will stop working when coverage ends. Review the current documents for the particular module and installer; the sources cited here do not establish a universal standard warranty duration or current brand-specific terms.

How much do solar panels degrade each year?
Published degradation figures do not all describe the same metric, so do not combine them into a guaranteed rate for your system.
| Figure | What it describes | Source and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| About 0.5% per year | PV module efficiency degradation | U.S. Department of Energy Federal Energy Management Program; publication year is not stated on the cited page. |
| About 1% per year | Decrease in system power output | U.S. Department of Energy, 2024; broad description of most systems sold over recent decades, not the identical metric used in the FEMP guidance. |
Ask which degradation rate the installer used in the production and financial forecast, and compare it with the exact module’s written performance warranty schedule. A short-term drop or fluctuation in measured output is not necessarily gradual panel aging; the DOE/FEMP guidance recommends comparing actual production with a model that accounts for solar resource, temperature, and age.
How much do solar panels cost?
Installed cost depends on location, system size, equipment, roof, labor, electricity use, and incentives. EnergySage’s 2026 marketplace guide reports an average price of $30,505 for a 12 kW system on its marketplace. Treat that as a reference point, not a guaranteed local quote or universal price. The same guide reports that shoppers who compare quotes on its platform save an average of 20%; that is a platform-reported average, not a promise of savings for an individual homeowner.

When do roof, inverter, storage, or utility details change the choice?
Roof age and condition
Panels and mounting equipment generally need to be removed for roof replacement. If the roof is near the end of its useful life or needs repair, resolve that timing before installation rather than treating the panel quote as the whole project cost.
Inverter and system design
The inverter is a separate system component, and its configuration should match the array design. Confirm the proposed inverter model and ask the installer how the design accounts for shading and expected production. DOE guidance notes that inverters may require maintenance or updating over a system’s life.
Battery storage
A battery is optional, not an automatic part of a rooftop system. DOE describes storage as a way to provide resilience during outages; it adds cost. Ask what loads the proposed battery is intended to support, under what conditions, and whether its price is included in the quoted total.
Utility rules and exported electricity
Check the current utility tariff, interconnection process, and compensation for electricity sent to the grid before relying on bill-savings estimates. Export policies can change, so a proposal should identify the assumptions it uses rather than imply that every exported kilowatt-hour is credited the same way.
What should I compare in two solar proposals?
| Compare | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Production | Modeled annual kWh for your roof, with orientation, shading, solar-resource, temperature, and system assumptions identified. |
| Equipment | DC system size, exact module and inverter models, and any included battery; confirm the contract matches the proposed equipment. |
| Price and financing | Total cash price, financing terms and costs, ongoing charges, and incentives assumed. |
| Coverage | Current product and workmanship documents, covered items, labor and shipping, claim process, transfer rules, and exclusions. |
| Long-term output | Forecast degradation assumption and the model-specific warranted output schedule. |
| Site and utility | Roof age or repairs, permits, interconnection requirements, utility tariff, and export compensation. |
| Storage | Whether a battery is included, what it is designed to do, and its effect on total price. |
Ask installers to explain differences in assumptions instead of comparing headline prices alone. Use current manufacturer datasheets and warranty documents for the selected models, and make sure the written proposal describes the complete system rather than a panel in isolation.
