How to Choose Ryobi Tools and Batteries for a Road-Trip Emergency Kit

For a compact Ryobi roadside kit, start with the RYOBI 18V ONE+ High Pressure Digital Inflator (PCL001B) and a charged, compatible 18V ONE+ battery. RYOBI specifically lists the handheld inflator for car tires, with a digital gauge and automatic shutoff. Add the 18V ONE+ Jump Starter (P7101A) only if you understand your vehicle’s jump-start procedure and its engine is within the manufacturer’s stated limit. These tools supplement—not replace—the phone, warning equipment, jack, spare, first-aid supplies and other items recommended by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Start with the job your kit must perform

A road-trip emergency kit has two different kinds of work: preventing a minor problem from becoming a breakdown, and helping you stay visible and safe while professional assistance is arranged. Ryobi tools are useful for the first category, especially low-tire-pressure corrections and, in some vehicles, a 12-volt battery jump-start. They do not make it safe to stand beside fast traffic, repair every tire failure or replace a vehicle’s jack and usable spare.

  • Routine pressure loss: You need a portable inflator, an accurate pressure target and a way to check the tire when it is cold.
  • A completely discharged 12-volt battery: You may want a jump starter, but only after confirming the vehicle’s procedure, battery arrangement and engine compatibility.
  • A puncture or damaged tire: An inflator can temporarily restore pressure if the tire still holds air. It cannot seal a puncture or make a damaged tire safe to drive.
  • A roadside stop at night or in poor weather: Visibility, communication, warmth and traffic protection are more important than adding another power tool.

For most drivers, the inflator is the first Ryobi purchase because a low tire is more common than a failed battery and the tool has a direct car-tire use case. Treat the jump starter as a separate decision, not as an automatic companion purchase.

Which Ryobi inflator is best for car tires?

RYOBI 18V ONE+ High Pressure Digital Inflator PCL001B

The PCL001B is the closest match to a compact emergency kit. RYOBI describes it as ideal for filling car, bike and other small tires and sports balls. Its listed features are an LCD pressure gauge, automatic shutoff, onboard accessory storage and a maximum pressure of up to 160 PSI. The automatic shutoff lets you set the desired pressure and reduce the chance of continuing to inflate after reaching it.

Those specifications describe the tool’s capability, not a recommendation to inflate a car tire to 160 PSI. Use the pressure shown on the vehicle’s door-jamb placard, fuel-door label or owner’s manual. The number molded into the tire sidewall is a maximum limit for the tire, not the vehicle’s normal target. NHTSA advises checking pressure when tires are cold, before driving has warmed them.

RYOBI P739 one-gallon compressor

The P739 is a larger-format alternative that RYOBI explicitly markets for roadside tire inflation and rates at up to 120 PSI. A one-gallon compressor may suit a vehicle with enough storage room or a driver who also wants a general-purpose compressor at home. No published specification establishes a head-to-head inflation-time result, noise level or runtime comparison, so do not treat the larger tank as a tested performance advantage.

For a tight trunk or hatchback kit, the PCL001B’s handheld format is the practical choice. Choose the P739 when its larger form is acceptable and its roadside-tire positioning matches your other uses. In either case, verify that the hose, connector and included accessories fit your tire valves before the trip.

RYOBI PCL001B 18V ONE+ High Pressure Digital Inflator Top up car-tire pressure Up to 160 PSI LCD digital gauge, automatic shutoff, onboard accessory storage; listed for car tires Compact vehicle kits and routine pressure corrections
RYOBI P739 one-gallon compressor Roadside tire inflation Up to 120 PSI One-gallon compressor format; explicitly marketed for roadside tire inflation Drivers with room for a larger compressor or additional non-roadside uses

Neither published pressure rating tells you how much air a particular tire needs. The vehicle placard or owner’s manual remains the controlling instruction.

Should you add the Ryobi 18V ONE+ Jump Starter?

The P7101A is an optional addition for a vehicle with a conventional 12-volt starting system. RYOBI states that it works with any RYOBI 18V ONE+ battery, produces 1,600 peak amps, can jump-start engines up to 6.0L V8 and can provide up to 20 jump starts per charge when used with a 2Ah battery. RYOBI also lists anti-spark technology, reverse-polarity protection and an LED work light.

These are manufacturer claims, not a guarantee that the unit will start every engine in every temperature or battery condition. Before relying on it, read the vehicle owner’s manual for the approved jump-start points, connection order, grounding location and any restrictions on hybrid, diesel, start-stop or auxiliary-battery systems. Follow the manual even if the engine appears to be within the 6.0L V8 limit.

When the jump starter makes sense

  • You already own a compatible, charged 18V ONE+ battery and can store the starter and clamps together.
  • Your vehicle manual permits the type of jump-start connection the P7101A requires.
  • You have confirmed that the engine and electrical system are within the conditions specified by both the vehicle and tool instructions.
  • You understand that a jump start addresses a starting-battery problem, not a failed alternator, damaged cable, empty fuel tank or mechanical fault.

When to leave it out

  • You cannot verify the vehicle’s jump-start procedure or battery configuration.
  • The added bulk, charging routine or storage concerns would make you neglect the basic roadside supplies.
  • The vehicle is under warranty or has a specialized electrical system that directs owners to a specific service procedure.

If you carry the P7101A, keep its clamps and instructions with the tool rather than loose in the vehicle. Never guess at polarity or substitute a connection point because it is easier to reach.

How to choose and carry the 18V ONE+ battery

The 18V ONE+ platform is described by RYOBI as spanning more than 300 products. That platform statement does not prove that every battery fits every tool generation or that every pack delivers the same runtime. Check the exact battery and tool model numbers before packing the kit.

Use compatibility, not platform size, as the test

  1. Write down the model of the inflator and, if applicable, the jump starter.
  2. Confirm the battery is identified as compatible with those exact models in their current instructions.
  3. Inspect the terminals, housing and latch for damage before departure.
  4. Charge the pack fully and test each tool at home, including the inflator’s gauge and shutoff.
  5. Carry the battery in a way that prevents metal objects from bridging its terminals.

Capacity and in-vehicle storage

The available sources do not establish a universally best battery capacity for a vehicle kit, nor do they establish a model-specific storage-temperature limit. Do not infer an ideal pack size from the platform’s product count. Use the capacity recommended in the exact tool and battery manuals, and check those manuals before leaving a battery in a parked vehicle. Extreme heat or cold can affect battery condition and readiness.

A sensible practice is to maintain one charged, compatible pack with the kit, record the date you last tested it and recharge it after any use. If the manual says the pack should not remain in a vehicle under certain conditions, store it elsewhere and place it in the car before a trip.

Build the roadside kit around NHTSA’s essentials

NHTSA’s road-trip guidance, published May 29, 2025, calls for more than power tools. Pack the following categories so a tool failure does not remove your ability to communicate, see, stay warm or summon help:

  • Communication: a charged phone and a charging cable or power source suitable for the vehicle.
  • Visibility and lighting: a flashlight with working batteries and warning devices that can alert approaching traffic.
  • Medical and personal protection: a first-aid kit, gloves and any required personal medication.
  • Tire and lifting equipment: a tire-pressure gauge, the vehicle’s jack, a ground mat and a usable spare if the vehicle was supplied with one.
  • Basic repair capability: simple tools appropriate to the vehicle, without assuming they can replace professional repair.
  • Weather and delay supplies: drinking water, food and emergency blankets.

Check your vehicle’s spare-tire arrangement before choosing a tool bag. Some vehicles have a temporary spare, an inflator-and-sealant system or no spare at all. The Ryobi inflator should complement that arrangement, not lead you to remove or ignore it.

Prepare the vehicle before leaving

NHTSA recommends checking tire condition and pressure before a long trip and reviewing other vehicle systems. Perform these checks at home, where you have light, level ground and time to correct a problem.

  1. Read the target pressure: Locate the vehicle placard or owner’s-manual specification for front and rear tires. Record different pressures if the vehicle uses them.
  2. Check cold tires: Measure before driving or after the vehicle has been parked long enough for the tires to cool. Compare the reading with the vehicle specification, not the sidewall maximum.
  3. Inspect the tread and sidewalls: Look for visible damage, embedded objects, bulges and unusual wear. An inflator is not a remedy for structural damage.
  4. Test the kit: Fit the PCL001B or P739 connector to a tire valve, confirm the gauge responds and verify the automatic shutoff if using the PCL001B. If carrying the P7101A, check its leads and light without attempting an unnecessary jump.
  5. Check the vehicle equipment: Confirm the jack, wrench, spare or sealant system and towing information are present and accessible.
  6. Review the manual: Pay attention to instructions for driver-assistance features, hybrid or auxiliary electrical systems and designated lifting or jump-start points.

NHTSA identifies underinflation as the leading cause of tire failure. Correct pressure is therefore a preventive check, not merely a repair step after a warning light appears.

How to use the inflator during a roadside stop

An inflator can help with a gradual pressure loss or a tire that remains serviceable after a minor leak. It cannot make a tire safe when the carcass, sidewall or wheel is damaged.

  1. Get out of the traffic path: Move to a safe location if the vehicle can be driven without damaging the tire. Turn on hazard lights and use the warning equipment recommended for your situation. Do not stand between the vehicle and moving traffic.
  2. Confirm the tire’s condition: If you see a bulge, split sidewall, exposed cord, detached tread or a rapidly deflating tire, stop and call roadside assistance rather than relying on inflation.
  3. Read the target: Use the vehicle placard or owner’s manual. Do not use the sidewall maximum as the target.
  4. Connect the tool: Attach the inflator to the valve securely, keeping the hose clear of hot or moving parts. Connect the charged battery only as directed by the tool instructions.
  5. Inflate and monitor: Start the tool and watch the gauge. With the PCL001B, set the desired pressure and allow its automatic shutoff to stop inflation; verify the final reading.
  6. Recheck and decide: Remove the connector, check for continuing air loss and compare the tire’s condition with the owner’s manual’s driving guidance. A tire that will not hold pressure needs repair or replacement.

Pressure may change as the tire warms during driving, so recheck all tires at the next safe opportunity using the vehicle’s prescribed cold-pressure procedure.

How to use the jump starter without guessing

Because connection points and procedures vary, the vehicle owner’s manual controls this operation. The following workflow is a preparation framework, not a substitute for the manual’s exact sequence:

  1. Park safely, switch off accessories and confirm the vehicle is in the required gear or park position.
  2. Identify the positive and negative terminals or the designated remote posts specified by the manual. Do not assume the most visible metal point is correct.
  3. Inspect the battery and cables. Stop if the battery is cracked, leaking, frozen or otherwise unsafe to connect.
  4. Verify the P7101A battery is charged and the clamps are clean and undamaged.
  5. Connect the clamps in the order and to the locations stated in the vehicle and tool instructions. Use the starter’s reverse-polarity and anti-spark protections as safeguards, not as permission to connect blindly.
  6. Attempt to start only for the duration allowed by the instructions. If the engine does not start, stop repeated attempts and arrange professional assistance.
  7. Once running, disconnect in the prescribed order, secure the clamps and determine why the battery discharged before continuing the trip.

The P7101A’s stated capacity of up to 6.0L V8 and up to 20 jump starts per charge with a 2Ah battery are manufacturer figures. Actual results depend on the vehicle, battery condition, temperature and connection procedure.

Decision guide: which combination fits your vehicle?

Your situation Recommended Ryobi choice What else you must carry or verify
You want the smallest practical tool for occasional low-pressure warnings. PCL001B inflator plus one charged compatible 18V ONE+ battery. Cold-pressure specification, tire gauge, spare or sealant system, jack and warning devices.
You have room for a larger compressor and also want a general compressor format. P739 one-gallon compressor plus a compatible charged battery. Storage space, connector fit and the same tire-safety equipment as above.
You regularly travel far from help and your vehicle manual permits an external jump starter. PCL001B plus optional P7101A, with compatible batteries. Engine size and electrical-system checks, exact jump points, clamps and phone-based assistance.
You drive a vehicle with an unfamiliar or specialized electrical system. Use the inflator only if appropriate; defer jump-starting until the manual or a professional confirms the method. Manufacturer guidance, roadside-service contact and the full NHTSA-style emergency kit.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Inflating to the sidewall number

The sidewall figure is a maximum, not the vehicle’s operating target. Use the placard or owner’s manual and check cold tires.

Assuming every 18V ONE+ battery is interchangeable

The platform’s more-than-300-product description is not a model-by-model compatibility guarantee. Verify the exact battery and tool instructions.

Treating a compressor as a puncture repair

If pressure drops again, the tire has visible damage or the vehicle cannot be driven safely, stop and obtain repair or towing service.

Leaving batteries in extreme vehicle temperatures

Model-specific storage limits were not established for these tools. Consult the exact battery manual before storing a pack in a parked vehicle.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Working beside traffic because the tool is portable

Portability does not reduce collision risk. Move to safety when possible, use warning devices and call for assistance when the location is unsafe.

Testing only after the emergency begins

A dead battery, missing connector or inaccessible jack can turn a useful tool into extra weight. Test the kit before departure and after every use.

A practical packing and maintenance routine

  • Store the inflator, hose, adapters and battery in one labeled container so the connector is not separated from the tool.
  • Keep the jump starter’s clamps and instructions with the P7101A if you carry it.
  • Place the kit where it can be reached without unloading luggage on a shoulder.
  • Inspect cables, hoses, connectors and the flashlight whenever you service the vehicle.
  • Recharge the battery after use and retest the tools before the next long trip.
  • Replace expired first-aid, food, water or battery items according to their own instructions.
  • Review the vehicle manual whenever you change vehicles, batteries or tire equipment.

What the finished kit should accomplish

A well-chosen Ryobi setup gives you a compact way to correct ordinary tire-pressure loss and, when properly verified, an additional option for a discharged 12-volt battery. The PCL001B is the strongest starting point because its published purpose directly includes car tires, its gauge and automatic shutoff support controlled inflation, and its format suits limited storage. The P7101A is worthwhile only when the vehicle’s procedure, engine application and battery readiness are confirmed. The P739 is a legitimate larger-format roadside inflator for drivers who have room for it.

Keep those tools in perspective: safe parking, communication, warning devices, a tire gauge, jack and ground mat, a usable spare or approved sealant system, gloves, first aid, food, water and emergency blankets are what turn a tool selection into an emergency kit.
