In its guide updated August 10, 2026, Men’s Health names the Adidas Adizero EVO SL best overall, the ASICS Gel-Nimbus 28 best for recovery runs, the Skechers Aero Razor best lightweight trainer, the Saucony Endorphin Elite 3 best for speed, and the Hoka Rocket X 3 best for short races. Those are the publication’s category picks, not guarantees that each shoe will suit every runner.
What the shoe rankings tell you—and what they don’t
Men’s Health says its team evaluated more than 100 pairs of trainers over the preceding two years, logging hundreds of miles on paved roads, tracks, and dirt. Its reported sessions included HIIT, Hyrox, treadmill runs, and races from 5Ks to marathons. The five named picks represent different uses; the guide says it covers ten men’s shoes overall, but the available excerpt names only these five. The rankings are the publication’s editorial judgments, not an independent comparative test or a population-level study.

The same shoe can feel different across feet, paces, distances, and surfaces. Use category labels to narrow options, then judge fit and ride on your own foot and for the runs you actually do.
Choose by the running you plan to do
Easy and recovery runs
The Gel-Nimbus 28 is Men’s Health’s recovery-run pick. A softer, more cushioned ride may appeal for comfortable, easier miles, but cushioning preference is personal and does not by itself establish that a shoe will prevent discomfort or injury.
#1 Best Overall
- Athletic mesh upper with durable leather overlays for added dimension & midfoot support
- Charged+ midsole cushioning provides unmatched softness & all-day comfort
- Durable rubber outsole provides traction & durability with strategically-placed flex grooves for proper toe-off
- Upper contains at least 30% recycled content
- Weight: 10.2 oz , Lace type: Standard tie, NEUTRAL: For runners who need a balance of flexibility & cushioning
Everyday training
The Adizero EVO SL is the guide’s best-overall pick, while the Aero Razor is its lightweight-trainer choice. Treat those labels as starting points: compare how each shoe fits and feels at your ordinary training pace rather than assuming the overall winner is right for every daily run.
Speed sessions and races
The Endorphin Elite 3 is named for going fast, and the Rocket X 3 for short races. A more responsive, thinner-feeling shoe may favor speed, while a more cushioned shoe may feel more comfortable to some runners. Match the shoe to the workout and race distance you intend to run; a short-race category pick is not automatically the right choice for long training runs.

Check fit before judging the ride
Men’s Health consulted Mark J. Mendeszoon, DPM, FACFAS, a podiatrist at Precision Orthopaedic Specialties in Ohio. The article’s fit guidance is a practical checklist:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Leave about a thumb’s width between your longest toe and the end of the shoe.
- Look for a snug fit that is not tight, with enough width and room through the toe box and midfoot.
- Check that the footbed feels comfortable and the tongue does not create pressure.
- Walk and run in the shoes if possible; the heel and Achilles area should not rub or irritate.
- Measure both foot length and width. Foot dimensions and function can change over time.
A shoe that feels wrong in the store is unlikely to become a good match simply because it tops a category list. If you are uncertain about fit, check the retailer’s return policy before buying; prices and return terms vary and should be verified at purchase.
Rank #3
- Men's stylish, slip-on sneakers
- SNUG FIT: Adjustable laces provide a secure fit
- FLEXIBLE UPPER: Soft textile upper is stretchy and comfortable
- CUSHIONED MIDSOLE: Cloudfoam midsole for step-in comfort and superior cushioning
- MADE IN PART WITH RECYCLED CONTENT: This product features at least 20% recycled materials. By reusing materials that have already been created, we help to reduce waste and our reliance on finite resources and reduce the footprint of the products we make
Match the outsole to your surfaces
For pavement, consider a smoother road outsole. For dirt or gravel, look for more rugged tread and traction. If your routes mix surfaces, prioritize the terrain where you run most and consider whether the grip and ride remain comfortable on the others.
Think about cushioning and shoe life as estimates, not guarantees
Cushioning needs can depend on running style, terrain, joint considerations, and pace goals. More cushioning can feel comfortable but may trade away some speed compared with thinner, more responsive designs; the balance is individual.
Rank #4
- Lightweight mesh upper with 3-color digital print delivers complete breathability
- Durable leather overlays for stability & that locks in your midfoot
- EVA sockliner provides soft, step-in comfort
- Charged Cushioning midsole uses compression molded foam for ultimate responsiveness & durability
- Solid rubber outsole covers high impact zones for greater durability with less weight
Mendeszoon’s estimate, as reported by Men’s Health, is that most running shoes are useful for 300 to 500 miles. This is a general expert estimate, not a guaranteed lifespan or a universal replacement threshold. How long a pair remains suitable depends on the shoe and its use; pay attention to fit and feel rather than treating the mileage range as a precise deadline.
