For the ASUS NUC 14 Essential NUC14MNK-B barebones kit, choose one 16 GB DDR5-4800, 1.1 V, non-ECC SO-DIMM at most, and an SSD in a format ASUS documents for the system: M.2 2280 NVMe PCIe 3.0 x4 or M.2 2242 SATA, with a stated capacity range of 128 GB to 2 TB. Check the exact SKU, its current ASUS Qualified Vendor List (QVL), and the drive format against the documentation before buying.
First confirm which NUC 14 Essential you have
This guidance is for the NUC14MNK-B barebones kit. ASUS’s US specification page says this kit ships with no memory and no storage; Mini PC bundles and regional configurations may differ. Check the product label and seller listing rather than assuming every NUC 14 Essential arrives barebones. ASUS NUC 14 Essential Kit specifications.

Which RAM fits the NUC 14 Essential?
ASUS specifies one DDR5-4800 SO-DIMM, with a maximum system memory capacity of 16 GB. The user manual adds that the module must be 1.1 V and non-ECC, and says memory based on 2 Gb, 4 Gb, and 8 Gb SDRAM density is unsupported. Do not buy a desktop DIMM or plan on adding a second module: this system has one memory slot.

| Memory requirement | What to choose |
|---|---|
| Module type | DDR5 SO-DIMM |
| Rated speed | DDR5-4800 |
| Voltage | 1.1 V |
| Error correction | Non-ECC |
| Maximum capacity | One 16 GB module; 16 GB total |
| Compatibility check | Look for the exact module in the ASUS QVL for the correct model |
ASUS advises buyers to use its Qualified Vendor List to find compatible, validated memory modules. The list is a useful check, but confirm its model match and current contents rather than treating a retailer’s generic “NUC compatible” label as equivalent to ASUS validation. The specifications and manual are available through ASUS’s technical specifications and support page.
Which SSD is compatible?
ASUS’s NUC14MNK-B specifications list two storage formats: an M.2 2280 NVMe SSD using PCIe 3.0 x4, or an M.2 2242 SATA SSD. ASUS gives a 128 GB–2 TB capacity range for these options. The 2280 and 2242 numbers describe physical drive length; NVMe and SATA describe interfaces, so check both the size and interface before purchase.

| Option | Physical format | Interface | ASUS-stated capacity range |
|---|---|---|---|
| NVMe SSD | M.2 2280 | PCIe 3.0 x4 | 128 GB–2 TB |
| SATA SSD | M.2 2242 | SATA | 128 GB–2 TB |
The system’s official specification for the 2280 NVMe option is PCIe 3.0 x4; a PCIe 4.0 SSD should not be expected to operate at PCIe 4.0 speeds in this system. ASUS does not provide a workload-based capacity recommendation, so choose capacity according to the operating system, applications, and files you expect to keep on the machine.

Check the M.2 connector wording before choosing SATA
There is an important difference in how ASUS presents the drive options. The US kit specification page labels the 2280 NVMe and 2242 SATA options as Slot 1 and Slot 2. The English manual describes one M.2 PCIe Gen3x4 connector that supports either a 22×80 or 22×42 key-M NVMe or SATA SSD. Do not infer from the two slot labels that the system has two independently usable M.2 connectors. In particular, confirm the exact SKU and revision documentation and QVL before purchasing an M.2 2242 SATA drive. ASUS’s kit specifications and NUC 14 Essential user manual are the references to compare.

How to install memory or an SSD
Follow the ASUS manual’s diagrams for screw and latch orientation. ASUS cautions that improper installation can damage the system and recommends buying replacement components from an authorized retailer for compatibility and reliability.
- Prepare the system: Read the complete manual, back up the system, shut it down, disconnect power and attached cables or peripherals, and place it on a stable surface. ASUS advises waiting approximately 30 minutes for internal components to cool before opening the computer.
- Open the case: Remove the four screws on the bottom of the system and lift off the cover, following the manual’s illustrations.
- Install the SO-DIMM: Align the module notch with the slot key, insert the module, then push it down until the retaining clips click into place.
- Install an M.2 2280 SSD: Insert the drive into the M.2 connector and rotate the Q-Latch counterclockwise to secure it.
- Install an M.2 2242 SSD: Use the manual’s illustrated 2242 procedure to move the screw and latch screw to the 2242 mounting position, then install and secure the drive.
- Close the case: Align the bottom cover’s FRONT marking, replace the cover, and tighten its four screws.
For the full procedure and compatibility details, refer to the ASUS NUC 14 Essential user manual.
