Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteChoose the jobs your tactic needs, then select the players who can perform those jobs. A popular formation is not a strategy by itself: your formation sets the defensive shape and available positions, while roles, attributes, PlayStyles and player relationships determine how the team behaves. You can start with a desired style and build a squad for it, or start with your squad and design a tactic around its strengths.
Start with the behaviour you want
Before moving players around, write one sentence describing how you want the team to play. Examples include: “progress quickly and attack the space behind the defence,” “keep the ball and create through central combinations,” “press immediately after losing possession,” or “stay compact and counter when the opponent overcommits.” That sentence is more useful than choosing a formation because it is fashionable.

EA’s FC IQ explanation presents both valid starting points. You can choose a style and find players for its requirements, or examine the players you already have and shape the tactic around their strengths. Neither route is universally superior. The correct choice depends on your squad, the mode, and the type of matches you play.

Turn the team concept into responsibilities rather than vague labels. A direct attacking plan may need a forward who threatens depth, a passer who can release him early, wide players who stretch the pitch and midfielders who protect the second ball. A possession plan may need press-resistant receivers, patient passers and defenders comfortable holding a high line. A lead-protection plan needs players who can retain the ball and maintain defensive coverage when attacks end.

Understand what the formation actually controls
In EA’s FC IQ framework, a formation represents the team’s defensive arrangement and determines which positions and roles are available. The diagram is therefore a starting structure, not a complete description of your attack. Roles influence movement and behaviour beyond the static positions shown on screen.
Two teams can use the same nominal formation and play very differently because their role assignments, player qualities and tactical instructions differ. Conversely, a player may look ideal for a position on the diagram but be a poor fit for the job your team must perform there.
Use the formation as a coverage map
After selecting a shape, inspect what happens when each player leaves his starting area. If a full-back advances, which teammate protects the channel? If a midfielder joins the attack, who remains behind the ball? If both wide players move inside, who supplies width? Treat every attacking movement as creating a defensive question.
This is a practical implication of EA’s descriptions of formation, roles and tactical choices rather than a quoted rule. Your final XI should cover the responsibilities together, not merely fill every slot with the highest-rated available player.
Check eligibility, then role suitability
When comparing candidates, first confirm that a player is eligible for the position you want to use. Then examine how well the assigned role suits the tactic. EA’s role material says role familiarity helps a player perform that role at a higher capacity, but presents familiarity as a selection aid rather than an absolute gate.

A familiar role is a useful tie-breaker, not a command to ignore the rest of the squad. EA’s FC 25 FC IQ explanation states: It is okay, and even expected, to use players in a base Role if that better fits your tactic.
That statement is from FC 25 and should not be treated as a promise that every FC 26 role behaves identically.

How to handle a non-ideal role
- Keep the player in a base role when his attributes and movement solve an important tactical problem.
- Prefer a familiar role when two candidates otherwise offer similar qualities.
- Do not force a player into a specialist job solely because the role name sounds optimal.
- Test whether the unfamiliar assignment creates visible gaps in build-up, pressing or rest defence.
EA’s FC 25 Gameplay Deep Dive gave examples such as Holding, Box-to-Box, Playmaker, Winger, Inside Forward, Poacher and Target Forward. Those are FC 25 examples, not a complete verified list for FC 26. EA says FC 26 introduces additional Player Roles, but the cited feature page does not enumerate the complete current list.
Compare attributes by the job, not by the card total
Overall rating can hide the qualities that matter most in a particular assignment. Compare the attributes connected to the job you have written down, and explain your priorities before looking at the candidates. The relevant combination differs by position and by the way your team is supposed to play.
| Job in the tactic | Attributes to examine first | Questions to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Build-up defender | Short and long passing, composure, ball control, defensive awareness | Can the player receive under pressure and find the next pass without exposing the centre? |
| Advancing wide player | Acceleration, sprint speed, dribbling, crossing or passing, stamina | Can the player create separation and still contribute when possession is lost? |
| Central progressor | Passing range, ball control, agility, composure, stamina | Can the player connect phases without slowing the attack or losing the ball in traffic? |
| Defensive midfielder | Positioning, interceptions, tackling, strength, reactions and passing | Does the player protect the area behind attacking midfielders and move the ball safely? |
| Depth-running forward | Acceleration, sprint speed, attacking positioning, finishing, composure | Will the player threaten behind the defence and finish the chances created? |
| Link forward | Ball control, passing, strength, reactions, finishing | Can the player receive with pressure, connect teammates and still threaten the goal? |
The table is a decision framework, not an EA rating formula. A possession tactic may value close control and passing more heavily than a counterattacking tactic; a high defensive line makes recovery speed more important; a low block increases the value of positioning and physical duels.
Use PlayStyles in context
EA’s PlayStyles guide says PlayStyles affect abilities and can influence team strategy and set-piece responsibilities. It also advises considering how a player’s PlayStyles complement the formation. That makes them useful evidence, but not a substitute for positional eligibility, role suitability or the rest of the XI.

- Write the player’s main job, such as progressing through midfield, defending the channel or attacking the far post.
- Identify which PlayStyles directly support that job.
- Check whether the tactic gives the player opportunities to use those abilities.
- Look for complementary styles elsewhere in the XI rather than stacking the same strength in every position.
- Review set-piece duties separately; a useful PlayStyle may matter more on dead balls than in open play for your particular setup.
Do not conclude that one PlayStyle makes a player the correct choice. A player with an attractive style can still be ineligible for the position, unfamiliar with the role or incompatible with the defensive coverage your shape needs.

Build the XI as a connected system
Once you have shortlisted candidates, inspect the team in phases instead of judging each position in isolation.
When you have the ball
- Can the first line play out, or does every player require a safe sideways pass?
- Is there at least one reliable option to progress centrally and one to progress wide?
- Do forward movements create passing lanes, or do several players occupy the same corridor?
- Can the team create chances if the opponent blocks your preferred route?
Immediately after losing the ball
- Are enough players close enough to pressure the ball?
- Does someone protect the space behind the first press?
- Will advanced full-backs or midfielders leave an open channel?
Without the ball
- Does the defensive arrangement match the shape you intended?
- Can your defenders handle the space your line leaves behind?
- Are wide areas and the centre both covered when the opponent switches play?
If an individual upgrade creates a team-wide weakness, it may be a downgrade for the tactic. Move the player, change the role or select a different candidate before abandoning the entire formation.
A repeatable player-selection workflow
- Define the match behaviour. Choose a clear priority: direct attack, possession, pressing, compact defence, protecting a lead or another specific approach.
- Choose a provisional formation. Use it to establish the defensive arrangement and the positions and roles available. Do not assume it determines every attacking movement.
- List the jobs. Write the responsibilities for every position, including what happens during transitions.
- Filter for positional eligibility. Remove candidates who cannot reasonably occupy the required position in your edition and mode.
- Check role familiarity. Prefer familiar assignments when the tactical fit is otherwise comparable, but keep a base role available when it better serves the plan.
- Score job-relevant attributes. Compare the qualities that affect the written responsibility rather than relying on overall rating.
- Review PlayStyles. Select styles that support the role and complement the formation; do not treat a style as a guarantee.
- Audit the whole XI. Check build-up, chance creation, defensive coverage and transitions as connected phases.
- Start from a preset when useful. Use an official tactical preset as a baseline, then inspect every change you make.
- Adapt to the mode. Reassess the same players and roles when moving between Competitive and Authentic gameplay contexts.
- Change one variable at a time. If the team fails, alter one player, role or instruction, then identify whether the problem improved before making another change.
Choosing between two players for one place
When two candidates appear close, compare them on the same axes. This prevents a flashy attribute or a higher overall rating from deciding the position accidentally.
| Comparison axis | What a stronger fit looks like | How to resolve a close call |
|---|---|---|
| Position | The player is eligible and does not require an avoidable positional compromise. | Prefer the natural option unless the alternative solves a clearly documented tactical need. |
| Role familiarity | The player is familiar with the assigned role. | Use familiarity as a tie-breaker, not an inflexible rule. |
| Job attributes | The player’s relevant attributes match the responsibility. | Weight the attributes that decide your chosen style most heavily. |
| PlayStyles | The player’s styles support the role and create useful combinations with teammates. | Choose the style that your formation can actually exploit. |
| Team balance | The selection preserves coverage, spacing and transition security. | Choose the player who improves the nearby players, not only his own slot. |
Example of the decision logic
Suppose one midfielder is a better passer but the other is more familiar with the defensive role your shape uses. If your tactic already has secure progression and repeatedly exposes the space in front of the centre-backs, the familiar defensive option may be the better selection. If the team cannot escape pressure and has adequate protection behind the ball, the passer may solve the more important problem. The correct answer comes from the team’s failure mode, not a universal ranking.
Presets, custom tactics and mode differences
EA’s Career Mode help material describes tactical presets as starting points. It lists FC, Direct Play, Cautious and Custom approaches. The official guidance says the available tactical presets work with available formations, while custom presets can have incompatibilities. Treat a preset as a functioning baseline, then verify what changes when you customise it.
Competitive and Authentic
EA describes Competitive as oriented toward head-to-head Ultimate Team and Clubs play. Authentic is presented as a more true-to-football preset for modes such as Career. The same player and tactical idea can therefore feel different across modes. Do not assume that a selection that works in one preset is automatically optimal in the other.

Common mistakes and precise fixes
Picking the formation first and forcing players into it
Symptom: several players are out of position or perform jobs they were not selected to do. Fix: return to the behaviour statement, list the required jobs and either change the formation or select players who fit those jobs.
Using overall rating as the deciding statistic
Symptom: the highest-rated XI cannot progress, defend transitions or create chances. Fix: compare attributes tied to each responsibility, then reassess the nearby players who must cover for that choice.
Treating role familiarity as a hard restriction
Symptom: a tactically important player is excluded even though the base role would solve your problem. Fix: use familiarity as evidence of likely capacity, not an absolute gate; EA explicitly says a base role can be the right fit.
Choosing a PlayStyle in isolation
Symptom: a player has an appealing style but rarely gets the situations in which it matters. Fix: connect the style to the formation, role, passing lanes and set-piece plan before selecting him.
Recommended Free Tools
Changing everything at once
Symptom: the team improves or worsens but you cannot identify why. Fix: change one player, role or instruction, play enough matches to observe the same phase, and record the result.

Assuming FC 25 explanations are a complete FC 26 manual
Symptom: a role name, count or behaviour does not match the current game. Fix: label FC 25 information as background and verify current FC 26 descriptions in the game or current EA documentation.
How to review a tactic after matches
Review repeatable situations rather than isolated highlights. Note where the first attack breaks down, which channel is exposed after losing the ball, and whether your forwards receive the ball facing the right direction. Then map each symptom to a job:
- Build-up stalls centrally: examine passing options, press resistance and whether roles create enough separation.
- Counterattacks concede space: examine which advancing player lacks cover and whether a holding responsibility is present.
- Wide attacks produce no chances: check whether a wide player has support, an inside runner and a safe recycle option.
- Striker disappears: check whether the midfield can supply him, whether another forward occupies his lane and whether the selected job matches his strengths.
- Late-match control collapses: consider a more secure role or a preset designed for caution rather than simply replacing one highly rated player.
Keep the diagnosis tied to your original behaviour statement. If the team repeatedly fails at the behaviour you chose, either repair the responsible jobs or acknowledge that the squad supports a different style better.
What the FC 25 role numbers do—and do not—tell you
EA’s FC 25 launch-era Gameplay Deep Dive reported 31 Roles and 52 unique Role/Focus combinations. That is an edition-specific feature count, not evidence that FC 26 has the same number. It is useful for understanding the scale of FC 25’s system, but it should not be used to infer the current game’s complete role list or balance.
Likewise, no independent performance statistic establishes that one formation or role is universally best. The reliable decision is contextual: match the job, the player and the mode, then check whether the complete XI delivers the behaviour you intended.
A compact pre-match checklist
- Can I describe the team’s intended behaviour in one sentence?
- Does the formation provide the positions and defensive arrangement that behaviour requires?
- Is every player eligible for his position?
- Does each role fit the player’s strengths, with familiarity used as a guide?
- Have I compared the attributes that matter for the job rather than only overall rating?
- Do the PlayStyles support the role and the formation?
- Who covers each advancing player when possession is lost?
- Can the XI progress, create, defend and transition as a connected unit?
- Am I using a Competitive or Authentic context, and have I checked edition-specific role information?
- If I changed a custom preset, did I verify compatibility and inspect the resulting behaviour?
Bottom line
The best player for a position is the one who performs the required job while helping the rest of the XI perform theirs. Start with a clear team behaviour, choose a formation that supports its defensive arrangement, filter for position and role fit, compare job-relevant attributes and PlayStyles, and audit the whole team in possession and transition. Use presets as baselines, treat role familiarity as guidance rather than law, and keep FC 25 explanations separate from verified FC 26 information.
