One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchFor better home photo prints, choose a paper finish that suits the image and where it will be viewed, confirm your printer supports that paper and size, then select the matching media type in the print driver. Use a photo-quality setting, manage color in either your editing app or the printer—not both—and make a small proof before printing a batch.
Choose a finish for the image and viewing conditions
Paper finish changes both the look of a photo and how it behaves in the light. Glossy is a sensible starting point for vivid snapshots if reflections are acceptable; matte is useful for a less reflective display or an artistic presentation; satin, semi-gloss, and luster offer a middle ground. Names and appearance vary by manufacturer, so treat these as starting points rather than a universal ranking. HP describes glossy as suited to vibrant color, matte as glare-free for display, and satin as general use; Epson distinguishes glossy photo media from matte media used for artistic presentation.

- Glossy: Consider it for crisp-looking, colorful snapshots when the viewing area does not make reflections distracting.
- Matte: Consider it when you want a less reflective surface or an artistic presentation.
- Satin, semi-gloss, or luster: Consider these if you want some sheen without a full-gloss surface. Check the manufacturer’s description because finish labels are not identical across brands.
Before buying or loading paper, compare its sheen under the light where the print will be seen, how its surface suits the image, whether the printer supports the paper and sheet size, and whether borderless printing is available for that combination. The manufacturer guidance cited here does not provide comparable paper prices, so it cannot support a price ranking.

Check image resolution at the intended print size
Print size depends on the image’s pixel dimensions, not just how large it looks on screen. HP recommends 300 DPI at the target size and gives 1200 × 1800 pixels as its example for a 4 × 6-inch print. That is HP’s recommendation in a guide with no publication year stated, not a universal threshold for every printer, output size, or viewing distance. If a print looks soft or pixelated, check the original file’s pixel dimensions at the requested size and avoid using a compressed thumbnail.

Match the print driver to the loaded paper
In the print dialog, set the paper size and media type to match what is actually loaded. A media-type choice is not merely a label: Epson says the Type or Media Type setting communicates the paper type and adjusts ink coverage. The correct entry depends on the paper and printer. Epson maps specific Epson papers to driver choices, and Canon’s G2070-series manual gives its own product-to-setting mappings; those examples should not be assumed to apply to other models.
Check the exact printer model’s manual for supported paper types, sizes, source trays, and loading orientation. Epson notes that paper support differs by printer, and Canon’s G2070-series supported media and sizes can depend on the operating system. There is no universal photo-paper loading orientation: follow the instructions for the specific printer and paper.

Set quality and color management deliberately
Start with a photo-quality preset
Choose the driver’s photo or best-quality option when detail matters. Exact names and controls vary by printer and software. HP recommends using “Best” or “Photo” quality and checking a small crop before committing premium paper. Review the proof for sharpness, color, banding, and edges.

Let one device manage color
Choose either the editing application or the printer to manage color; do not knowingly apply both sets of corrections. If you use an application-based workflow, select the appropriate printer-and-paper ICC profile and turn off printer-side color correction as appropriate. Otherwise, let the printer manage color. HP warns against dual color management, while Epson recommends soft-proofing when supported to preview how tone and color may vary across media.

Choose borders and borderless printing with care
Use a border if you want one. Enable borderless printing only when the exact printer, paper, and size combination supports it. In borderless mode, the image may be enlarged to fill the sheet, cropping its edges; leave enough image beyond the desired edge to accommodate that crop. Canon’s model-specific support guidance describes this enlargement and cropping behavior and warns that unsupported paper can affect print quality or hues. Check your model’s current manual for applicable media and size support.
A practical workflow for a home photo print
- Check compatibility: Look up the exact printer model’s supported photo media and sizes in its manual.
- Load the paper correctly: Follow the printer and paper instructions for the printable side and source tray.
- Set the paper size and media type: Select the actual size and the closest exact driver entry for the loaded stock.
- Choose photo quality: Use the printer’s photo or best-quality mode, then print a small proof.
- Select one color-management path: Use the application with an appropriate ICC profile, or let the printer manage color.
- Set the layout: Choose a border or supported borderless mode, allowing for possible edge cropping.
- Review before printing more: Let the print settle or dry as the paper instructions require, then assess it in the intended lighting.
Troubleshoot common photo-print problems
- Washed-out or smeared output: Check that the driver’s media type matches the loaded paper; the setting affects ink coverage.
- Color differs from the screen: Check whether both the application and printer are adjusting color. Use an appropriate profile if available and soft-proof where supported.
- Soft or pixelated output: Check the source image’s pixel dimensions at the selected print size and use the original file rather than a compressed thumbnail.
- Edges clipped in borderless mode: Check the image’s aspect ratio and allow for the crop caused by enlargement to fill the page.
These steps are general home-inkjet guidance, not a setup for one specific model. Driver menus, paper compatibility, ink behavior, and borderless support vary by printer, operating system, paper, and application.
