Start with the devices your child actually uses, then match controls to the job: setting limits, blocking apps or sites, or receiving alerts about possible risks. No parental-control product has the same coverage on every operating system, and a vendor’s AI-monitoring claims are not proof that it catches every harmful interaction. Built-in controls may be enough for some families; compare any third-party service against your specific needs, privacy expectations and setup requirements.
Start with your family’s devices and priorities
Before comparing brands, list each child’s phone, tablet and computer, along with its operating system and version. Include browsers, gaming devices and the social and AI services the child uses. A service may offer different features on Android and iOS, while a particular feature can have narrower requirements than the product’s general compatibility list.

Next, decide what you want the controls to do. These are separate jobs, and a product that does one well may not offer the others on every device:

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11- Time management: daily limits, downtime, schedules or category-based allowances.
- Access restrictions: blocking specific apps or websites, applying category rules or pausing internet access.
- Risk alerts: notifications about activity the service identifies as potentially concerning.
- Visibility: information about app use, browsing or connected accounts.
For example, a parent who mainly wants to limit access to certain AI apps and social media, while setting screen-time limits, should verify app blocking and time limits separately for every relevant device. An alert feature is not a substitute for a block, and a block does not provide insight into conversations.

Check exactly what each service covers
Ask how monitoring works: does the service scan an account that you connect, activity on the device, or both? Then check whether the particular social or AI service is supported, whether support depends on the operating system, and which features require a separate app, account link or permission. Confirm supported browsers and devices, too. Changes to operating systems and apps can affect coverage, so review the vendor’s current requirements rather than relying on an old compatibility list.
Here are two examples of why platform-by-platform checks matter. These are vendors’ published feature descriptions, not independent tests of accuracy or completeness.
Qustodio
Qustodio lists AI-powered alerts for concerning messages or searches and conversations during online gameplay, as well as web filtering, app blocking, time limits and social monitoring. Its feature page lists social alerts for WhatsApp, Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat and X on Android, but WhatsApp and Instagram on iOS. It lists support from Android 9.0, iOS 15 and Windows 10; Chromebook support is limited to Chromebooks with Google Play. Check the current feature and compatibility details for feature-specific exceptions. Qustodio also describes its AI-powered alerts on a separate page.

Bark
Bark says its Premium plan scans connected accounts and sends alerts for possible risks such as bullying, self-harm, predatory behavior, risky app or site use, sexual content and violence. Bark describes its machine-learning system as considering conversation context rather than only individual keywords. That is the company’s description; it does not establish detection accuracy, false-positive rates or complete coverage. See Bark’s monitoring information for its stated approach.
Separate alerts from blocking and time controls
Monitoring and restriction solve different problems. If you want to reduce access, check for the exact controls you need: app or site blocking, category rules, schedules, daily limits, internet pause or SafeSearch. Find out whether each applies to the child’s device, a connected account or only the home network.
Bark separately documents app and site blocking, category rules, access schedules, internet pause and SafeSearch locking for Google, Bing, DuckDuckGo and YouTube. It says Bark Home can apply controls to devices on home Wi-Fi, including smart TVs and gaming consoles. Its support page says mobile controls can work over home Wi-Fi, other networks or cellular data when configured through the Bark Kids app. These statements do not mean every control is available on every Bark product or platform; check the product-specific filtering and setup details.

See whether built-in controls are enough
Families using Apple devices should check the current Screen Time and child-safety settings before paying for a separate service. Apple announced on September 14, 2026 that new features were available with updates to iOS 27, iPadOS 27 and macOS 27. Announced tools include Ask to Browse for Safari, expanded Communication Safety protections for gore and violent content in shared media, age-tailored Time Allowances for categories including Social Media, Entertainment and Games, and a redesigned Screen Time overview. Apple says all devices in a Family Sharing group must be updated to the relevant current systems for the Screen Time update; some features vary by region, language or device model. Confirm that the feature is available on the family’s devices and accounts before relying on it. See Apple’s September 2026 announcement.

It said children under 13 require a Child Account and described default web filters and app restrictions; for ages 13–17, it announced age-appropriate protections including web filters and Communication Safety. Those were announced ecosystem behaviors at that time, so check current account and operating-system settings rather than assuming they apply unchanged. See Apple’s 2025 announcement.
Built-in controls may be a practical fit if they cover your devices and provide the limits or restrictions you want. A dedicated service may be worth evaluating if you need features beyond those controls, such as particular alerts or coverage across other platforms. Compare the actual feature gap, not the size of a feature list.

Make privacy and family expectations part of the decision
Before enabling monitoring, establish what data the service accesses, what parents can see, where alerts go and who else can access the account. Check whether setup involves linking the child’s accounts or granting device permissions, and review the provider’s explanation of data handling. Comparative independent privacy audits were not established for the services discussed here, so do not treat a feature page as a privacy assessment.
Explain the rules to your child in an age-appropriate way: what is monitored, what triggers an alert, who receives it and what happens next. Agreeing on boundaries can make controls easier to understand and gives the family a chance to distinguish safety checks from routine surveillance.
Compare setup demands, cost and upkeep
Check installation steps and required permissions for each device. Account linking, a required child app, browser limitations or a home-network component can change what the service sees and how much work setup takes. Ask how you will know if protection stops working after an app or operating-system update, and how often you will need to revisit settings.

Put vendor-reported risk figures in context
Qustodio’s February 10, 2026 announcement of its 2025 Annual Data Report says the report analyzed anonymized app and web usage from January 1 through December 31, 2025, for more than 400,000 families with children aged 4–18 globally. It also says the report included insights from 10,000 schools in the United States, United Kingdom and Australia. Separately, Qustodio says it surveyed 1,361 parents in the United States, United Kingdom, France, Spain, Brazil and Australia.
In that announcement, Qustodio reported that 64% of children had received a message containing potential harassment in the past year, and said 76% of surveyed parents cited dependence on AI tools as their top worry. These are provider-reported figures from a commercial report and survey, not universal prevalence estimates. See Qustodio’s report announcement for its stated scope.

Quick Recap
Use a short decision checklist
- Inventory devices: record each child’s device, operating system and version, plus the browsers and services in use.
- Choose the job: write down whether you need limits, blocks, risk alerts, visibility or a combination.
- Verify coverage: check each required feature on the exact platform and app, including setup requirements and any exceptions.
- Compare built-in settings: see whether the device maker’s controls meet the need before adding another service.
- Review privacy and family rules: understand what is accessed and shared, and tell the child what monitoring means.
- Confirm ongoing terms: check current price, renewal, support and maintenance requirements, then revisit coverage after major app or OS changes.
