For mild dry-eye symptoms, start with an over-the-counter product labeled as a lubricant or artificial tear for temporary relief of dryness. If you need drops more than six times a day, or you are allergic to preservatives, the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) advises choosing preservative-free tears. Gels and ointments are other OTC lubrication formats; no format is established as best for everyone.
What OTC eye drops can—and cannot—do
Dry eye occurs when your eyes do not make enough tears or when tears do not work correctly. Symptoms may include scratchiness, burning, redness, light sensitivity, or blurry vision. The National Eye Institute (NEI) identifies OTC artificial tears as the most common treatment for mild dry eye. They lubricate the eye and can temporarily relieve dryness; they do not establish the cause of ongoing symptoms or replace care for more serious cases.

FDA’s OTC lubricant labeling guidance includes temporary relief of burning or irritation due to dryness, but the directions and warnings on the product you buy take precedence. FDA OTC Monograph M018
How to choose a format and preservative status
Choose preservative-free tears when use is frequent or preservatives are a concern
AAO guidance says to use preservative-free tears if you use artificial tears more than six times a day or are allergic to preservatives; preservatives in tears may begin to irritate the eyes. This is a conditional recommendation, not a claim that every preserved product is unsafe. FDA explains that preservatives help prevent microbial contamination and support shelf life and safety in many eye-drop products, especially multidose containers. Follow the selected product’s label, and ask an eye-care professional if you are unsure which option suits your situation. AAO: Dry Eye Treatment FDA: What You Should Know About Eye Drops
#1 Best Overall
- ORIGINAL STRENGTH: Provides temporary relief for mild, occasional dry eye symptoms
- FAST ACTING: Instantly lubricates and moisturizes
- EASY TO USE: Apply 1-2 drops in the affected eye(s) as needed
- SOOTHING: Safe to use as often as needed
- VALUE SIZE: Two convenient multidose bottles
Consider gels or ointments as alternatives
OTC moisturizing gels and ointments are also available for dry eye, according to NEI. The available guidance does not establish a universal winner among drops, gels, and ointments, so compare the product’s intended use and directions rather than assuming one format is right for every person. Use eye drops safely
Eye drops must be sterile to reduce infection risk. Wash your hands before use, and keep the dropper tip from touching your eye, hands, clothing, or any other surface. Follow the product’s own instructions for dosing, storage, and disposal. Do not use a solution that has changed color or become cloudy; FDA’s OTC lubricant labeling guidance also warns users to stop and consult a doctor for pain, vision changes, continued redness or irritation, or symptoms that worsen or persist. When to contact an eye-care professional
Arrange an eye-care evaluation if symptoms persist, worsen, interfere with daily activities, or are not relieved by OTC lubricating drops. Significant redness, pain, discharge, or vision changes also call for medical advice; stop using the drops and seek care if these symptoms occur. More serious dry eye may require clinician-directed prescription medicines or other treatment rather than continued self-treatment. AAO dry-eye guidance FDA eye-drop safety guidance
