When trying headphones, check that the cups surround your ears, pressure is distributed comfortably, and the fit stays secure without pinching. Try them with your usual glasses and wear them long enough to notice heat or pressure building.
How should over-ear headphones fit?
The ear cups should sit around your ears rather than press on them. Adjust the sliders until the headband rests naturally on your crown and the pads cover both ears. Sony’s general fitting guidance recommends extending the sliders and adjusting the pads to cover the ears completely: Sony headphone fit guidance.

Position the cups so their cushions sit evenly against the sides of your head. Beats advises setting the headband height first, then rotating each earcup until it lies flat: Beats: What Makes Headphones Comfortable. These are general adjustment tips, not a guarantee that every model will fit every person.

The headphones should stay in place when you move, but the frame should not press painfully at your temples or around your ears. Also notice whether the headband creates a concentrated hot spot on your crown. Weight matters, but where the headband and pads distribute that weight matters too. Comfort involves subjective try-ons as well as design factors such as weight, clamping force, cup size, cushion feel, and pressure distribution; see RTINGS’ explanation of headphone comfort testing.

How to test comfort before choosing a pair
- Wear your usual glasses and headwear. If you normally listen with glasses, a hat, or a particular hairstyle, include them in your try-on. A different combination can change how the cups and headband sit.
- Adjust the sliders and headband. Set the cups around both ears and let the headband rest naturally on your crown. Make sure the sliders are not at an uncomfortable extreme just to get the cups into position.
- Settle the cups evenly. Reposition or rotate each cup until the cushions make even contact rather than pressing harder on one side.
- Check pressure points. Notice pressure on your crown, temples, glasses arms, and outer ears. A secure fit should not cause painful pinching or soreness.
- Keep them on for a while. A quick try-on may not reveal pressure or warmth that builds during a longer session. Pay attention to how the fit changes as you wear them.
- Test in realistic conditions. If you will use the headphones in a warm room or for long listening sessions, consider whether the cushions and cups make your ears uncomfortably warm.
What to check when wearing glasses
Try the actual headphones with the glasses you normally wear. The arms can sit between the pads and your head, creating pressure; a roomy cup and soft cushion may help, but the frame shape, cup size, and clamping force all affect the result. A pair that feels fine without glasses may become uncomfortable with them.
Glasses can also interfere with the ear-cup seal and affect bass response. If sound changes when you put your glasses on, check whether the pads still sit evenly around your ears rather than leaving a gap. More space inside the cups is not automatically better if the headphones no longer rest securely.

How to compare headphones for comfort
When comparing two or more pairs, try to compare them in the same conditions—especially with the same glasses and for a similar amount of time. Check the actual fit rather than treating a category label or a single specification as proof of comfort.

| What to compare | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Cup space and shape | The pads surround your ears without pressing on the outer ear; cups can be positioned evenly against your head. |
| Pressure and stability | The headphones stay in place without painful tightness, including where the pads meet your glasses arms. |
| Weight distribution | The headband and crown pad spread the load without creating a concentrated hot spot. |
| Cushions and warmth | The pads feel comfortable against your skin, and your ears do not become uncomfortably warm in the conditions where you plan to listen. |
| Adjustability | The sliders and cups can be positioned to fit your head, and the manufacturer provides guidance for your model. |
There is no universally comfortable fit, and a weight figure alone cannot tell you how a particular pair will feel on your head. If you cannot try a model in person, use its dimensions and adjustment range as clues, but treat them as imperfect substitutes for wearing it.

What if the headband feels too tight?
Start with ordinary adjustments: reposition the headband and cups, and use the sliders to distribute the fit more evenly. Check the manufacturer’s instructions for the exact model before changing cushions or attempting anything more involved.
Sennheiser suggests repositioning the headband or earcups and trying different cushions when they are available. It warns that stretching the headband can damage it and may affect the warranty: Sennheiser support. Sony also advises against using excessive force or twisting headphones while adjusting them: Sony headphone fit guidance. If normal adjustments do not relieve painful pressure, that model may not suit your head; do not force the frame to fit.

Why cushion softness and breathability both matter
Soft or thick pads can feel pleasant and help keep the ear cups from pressing directly on your ears, but larger cups and thicker cushions can also trap heat. Consider both the initial feel and whether warmth becomes distracting over time. A cushion that feels soft in a brief try-on is not necessarily the most comfortable choice for a long session, particularly in a warm environment.

If replacement cushions are available for a model, confirm compatibility with that exact pair and follow its service instructions. Cushion changes can alter how the headphones sit, so check comfort and seal again afterward.
