How to Choose Over-Ear Headphones for Your Phone and Listening Habits

Choose over-ear headphones by checking that they connect to your phone, then matching comfort, noise control, battery life and useful extras to how you listen. Don’t pick on a codec label or a headline battery figure alone: compatibility and performance depend on the specific phone and headphone model.

1. Check how the headphones will connect to your phone

Start with your phone’s exact model and available ports. Bluetooth avoids a cable, while wired listening depends on the phone, the headphone and any adapter all supporting the same audio connection.

For wired listening, verify the port and adapter

A 3.5 mm headphone jack offers a direct wired option. If your phone has USB-C, don’t assume that the port carries audio: some USB-C ports lack audio support, and digital USB-C headphones may not work through an analog 3.5 mm adapter. Check the phone maker’s compatibility information and the adapter’s requirements for your specific phone before buying. Bose explains USB-C audio compatibility and adapter limitations.

Decide whether wired fallback matters

If you want to use a cable when the battery is depleted or Bluetooth is unavailable, confirm that the headphone supports wired playback in the situation you expect. A supplied audio cable does not by itself establish whether playback works with the headphones powered off; check the model’s documentation for that detail.

2. Match noise control and awareness to where you listen

Noise cancellation can be useful on commutes and flights. An ambient or awareness mode can help you hear more of your surroundings without taking the headphones off. Consider the places you actually use headphones, and whether blocking noise or staying aware matters more in each one.

Features and their implementation vary by model. For example, Bose describes Quiet and Aware modes on its QuietComfort Headphones product page. Treat that as a model-specific feature description, not a guarantee that every headphone handles noise or ambient sound in the same way.

3. Prioritize fit for the length of your listening sessions

For long listening sessions, comfort can matter more than an extra feature. Over-ear headphones differ in clamp pressure, ear-pad shape, heat and weight, and individual fit is personal. Compare the manufacturer’s fit information and, if possible, try a pair or check the retailer’s return policy before committing. Product specifications alone can’t tell you how comfortable a particular model will feel.

4. Read battery claims in context

Battery life is a manufacturer claim for a particular model and set of conditions, not a category-wide standard. Check whether the stated figure is for noise cancellation on or off, and compare it with the settings you expect to use. Bose advertises up to 24 hours of audio playback with noise cancellation on for its QuietComfort Headphones; that figure is specific to that model and is not an independent test result. See Bose’s product specifications.

5. Consider codecs and multipoint only when you’ll use them

Codecs require support on both ends

A Bluetooth codec matters only when both your phone and headphones support it. Sony’s WH-1000XM6 specifications list SBC, AAC and LDAC for Classic Audio playback, and its guide directs users to their smartphone instructions for compatibility. The model also lists Bluetooth 5.3. These are specifications for that headphone, not a recommendation for every phone. Sony WH-1000XM6 specifications and Sony’s codec and compatibility guidance.

Codec availability does not establish that you will hear a difference. Check the phone’s supported codecs, but don’t treat a codec label as a shortcut for judging overall sound quality or suitability.

Multipoint is useful for a specific switching habit

Multipoint can be useful if you regularly switch between a phone and a computer. Confirm that the particular headphone supports it and check how the feature works before making it a deciding factor. If you use only one device at a time, it may not be worth prioritizing. Multipoint appears as a comparison feature in What Hi-Fi?’s over-ear headphone buying guide; support should still be verified for the model you’re considering.

6. Use a short checklist to make your choice

  1. Identify your phone and connection. Check whether you’ll use Bluetooth, a 3.5 mm jack or USB-C audio; verify any adapter for that exact phone.
  2. Rank your listening situations. Consider travel, calls, home listening and long sessions, then prioritize noise cancellation, awareness or comfort accordingly.
  3. Check the details you’ll rely on. Verify wired playback behavior, battery conditions, phone-codec compatibility and multipoint support in the model documentation.
  4. Assess fit before keeping the headphones. Try them if possible, or review the return policy in case the clamp, pads, heat or weight don’t suit you.

Sony WH-1000XM6 and Bose QuietComfort Headphones illustrate different specifications and features worth checking; neither is a universal pick. Choose based on your phone’s connection, the features you’ll actually use and how the headphones feel during your typical listening sessions.
