How to Choose Open-Ear Earbuds for Calls, Workouts, and Everyday Listening

Choose open-ear earbuds by fit and stability first, then check call performance, workout durability, battery claims, controls, and sound. “Open-ear” describes how the earbuds sit, not a single design: some hook around the ear, while others clip onto it. They let ambient sound reach you, but generally provide less isolation and immersion than sealed in-ear earbuds. Because ears and use habits vary, a design that works well for one person may not stay comfortable or secure for another.

Start with the trade-off: awareness instead of isolation

Open-ear earbuds leave the ear canal unsealed. That makes them useful when you want to listen while remaining more aware of nearby sounds, such as during outdoor activity or while working around other people. The same design usually provides less isolation and immersion than sealed in-ear earbuds. If blocking surrounding noise or getting a more enclosed listening experience is your priority, that trade-off may work against you.

“Open-ear” is a fit category, not a promise about a particular sound-transmission method. Ear-hook and clip-on earbuds deliver sound without the same sealed in-ear fit; bone-conduction headphones transmit sound differently and should not be treated as interchangeable with every open-ear earbud. TechRadar’s guide distinguishes these approaches. Your first decision is therefore not which model has the biggest feature list, but which way of wearing audio suits your priorities.

  • Consider open-ear designs if you want ambient sound to remain accessible during listening and can accept less isolation.
  • Consider sealed in-ear designs if immersion and isolation matter more than hearing more of your surroundings.
  • Compare individual models if comfort, call quality, sound, or exercise stability is decisive; those qualities are not established universally for the category.

Ambient awareness is a design advantage, not a guarantee that you will hear every sound around you or that listening is safe in every setting. Keep an appropriate level of attention to your surroundings, especially outdoors. If you work in a noisy environment, remember that the open fit does not block the noise; you may find yourself turning audio up or struggling to hear it. Consider whether that compromise suits the place and task where you will listen.

Choose a fit construction you can wear securely

Ear-hook designs

An ear-hook earbud rests at the ear and uses a curved section around the ear to help hold it in place. This is one construction to consider for movement, but the presence of a hook does not guarantee a secure or comfortable fit for every ear. Compare how the hook sits, whether it creates pressure, and whether it conflicts with glasses or other accessories you wear.

Clip-on designs

A clip-on model attaches around part of the ear rather than relying on a hook that loops behind it. The shape and contact points are different, so it is a separate fit option—not automatically more comfortable or stable. SoundGuys identifies the HUAWEI FreeClip 2 as a clip-on example and reports that its reviewer found it comfortable during extended listening. That is an editorial test finding, not a promise that the shape will suit every wearer.

Fit is personal, so judge the fit you can actually get

Ear shapes vary, and adjustment may be needed. Nothing’s support guidance for Ear (open) specifically says the fit can require adjustment and that glasses can be worn with adjustment; those instructions apply to that model and cannot be generalized to other earbuds. When possible, try both sides, follow the maker’s fitting guidance, and wear the earbuds for more than a brief moment before deciding whether contact points become uncomfortable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the fit with any glasses you regularly wear. A shape that seems comfortable on its own may feel different when the earbud and glasses occupy the same area. Notice pressure, looseness, and whether the earbuds stay positioned without you having to keep correcting them. A model’s appearance or stated weight cannot tell you how it will feel on your ears.

When comparing a hook and a clip, look at where each design contacts your ear, not just at product photos or labels. Try the motion you expect to make: turn your head, talk, and put on or remove glasses if that is part of your routine. A fit can feel fine while sitting still and become distracting later. If trying before buying is not possible, give more weight to model-specific descriptions of contact points and retention than to broad promises that a design suits everyone.

Test stability for the activity you plan to do

There is no single useful stability test for every listener. Walking to work, running, and gym movements place different demands on retention. Review guides from TechRadar and SoundGuys treat fit or stability as a selection and testing criterion; that supports checking the actual movement you expect to do rather than relying on a general fitness claim.

  1. Fit the earbuds as directed. Make any available adjustment before judging retention.
  2. Wear them during ordinary movement. Walk and turn your head, and notice whether either bud shifts or needs readjustment.
  3. Recreate your intended activity where practical. If you plan to run or exercise, check stability during those movements rather than assuming a comfortable seated fit will hold.
  4. Stop if the fit becomes uncomfortable. A model that stays in place but creates distracting pressure is not a good everyday fit for you.

If you cannot test a model before buying, look for fit information that describes the actual construction and movement tested. Treat general statements such as “made for workouts” as a reason to check details, not as proof that the earbuds will stay secure for your particular ears or routine.

  • 40-Hour Playtime, LED Display, Non-Stop Music: The over the ear earbuds feature an LED indicator displaying the charging case's battery status. The wireless earphones offer 8-10 hours of playtime per charge (depending on actual volume level), extended to a total of 40 hours with the charging case. Thanks to USB-C fast charging, the battery is fully recharged in just 1.5 hours – perfect for a dynamic lifestyle.

Think about the activity’s duration as well as its intensity. A short walk may reveal whether the earbuds shift, while longer listening can reveal pressure or irritation that a quick fitting misses. For gym use, include the head and body movements you actually make; do not assume that success on a run predicts comfort or retention during every exercise. Fit testing is about your normal routine, not an abstract fitness standard.

For workouts, verify the exact moisture rating and care instructions

Workout suitability depends on both fit and the product’s stated resistance to water or sweat. Ratings differ between models, and fitness positioning alone does not establish that a product is waterproof. Check the exact rating for the version sold in your region, then read the manufacturer’s care instructions—especially what to do after sweating.

The available examples illustrate why the rating should be checked model by model. TechRadar reports an IP55 rating for Shokz OpenFit 2+. SoundGuys reports IP57 water resistance for HUAWEI FreeClip 2. Nothing’s support guidance for Ear (open) recommends wiping sweat promptly, but the cited support guidance does not provide a numeric IP rating. These are different kinds of evidence and do not establish that one model is suitable for every workout or exposure.

  • Confirm the rating on the exact product page or documentation for the model and regional version you are considering.
  • Read the manufacturer’s care instructions rather than assuming a rating removes the need to clean or dry the earbuds.
  • Do not interpret a general exercise claim as a waterproof guarantee.

Keep the distinction between a listed resistance rating and day-to-day care clear. A rating is a model specification, while cleaning and drying instructions tell you how the manufacturer says to care for the product. Follow the instructions for the exact earbuds you buy, including any advice after a sweaty session. Nothing’s prompt-wiping advice is specific to Ear (open); it should not be presented as universal care guidance for every open-ear model.

Evaluate calls in the conditions where you make them

Call quality is more than a microphone count or a label such as “AI.” Wind and movement can affect whether your voice remains intelligible. If you take calls outdoors, while walking, or during a commute, seek microphone samples or independent listening tests made in conditions close to those you expect. A quiet-room sample alone will not answer how the earbuds handle wind.

TechRadar reports that calls on Shokz OpenFit 2+ can be less clear on windy days or while running. That is a model-specific review finding, not a category-wide result or a guarantee of what every caller will hear. For any model, check whether the available call tests include quiet surroundings, traffic, or wind, and distinguish what the reviewer heard from the manufacturer’s marketing claims.

Also consider how you switch between devices if you regularly use a phone and computer. Connectivity and device switching are relevant selection criteria, but do not assume a particular feature is present: verify the model’s current specifications and make sure its controls and connection behavior fit your routine.

  • FlexiClip Design, Secure Fit: Memory titanium FlexiClip adapts to any ear shape for all-day comfort. Ultra-lightweight and stable—won't fall off during intense workouts or running. Designed for active lifestyles.
  • Powerful Bass, 12mm Drivers: Custom 12mm drivers deliver deep bass and 86dB max output. Clear, loud sound for gym workouts and running—superior audio quality compared to bone conduction headphones.
  • AI Clear Calls: Advanced AI filters background noise for crystal-clear calls during outdoor running, gym workouts, or commutes. Perfect for work calls on the go.
  • 28H Playtime : 8 hours single charge, 28 hours with case. IP55 waterproof protects against sweat and rain during outdoor running and gym sessions. Bluetooth 6.0 for ultra-stable connection.

Make a short checklist of your actual call settings: indoors or outdoors, stationary or moving, quiet or near traffic. Then compare reviews against that list. A microphone sample can be useful evidence, but listen for whether speech stays understandable under the conditions tested rather than relying on a feature count. If your calls are mostly at a desk, prioritize those tests and the ease of answering or muting. If you often walk while talking, give wind and movement reports more weight.

Compare battery claims on the same basis

Battery figures are easy to misread when one figure describes the earbuds alone and another includes recharging from the case. Keep those measures separate. Also check the conditions behind a runtime claim where they are stated: use, volume, and enabled features can change practical battery life. A manufacturer’s advertised figure is not the same thing as a cross-brand independent test.

Example Reported battery information Other reported details Evidence and qualification
Shokz OpenFit 2+ 11 hours from the earbuds; 48 hours with the case Ear-hook design; 9.4 g per bud; IP55 Figures and review findings reported by TechRadar. Treat them as that guide’s report, not a guarantee for every user.
HUAWEI FreeClip 2 Not stated in the cited SoundGuys material Clip-on design; IP57 water resistance SoundGuys identifies the design and rating and reports its reviewer found the earbuds comfortable during extended listening.
Nothing Ear (open) 30 hours advertised; whether this is earbud-only or case-inclusive is not stated in the cited information Open sound technology; support guidance covers fit adjustment, glasses, exercise, and sweat care The battery figure is a manufacturer claim on Nothing’s US product page, not an independent comparison result.

Do not rank those battery figures without matching their measurement basis. In particular, a total that includes a case cannot be directly compared with earbud-only runtime, and a figure with no stated basis should remain qualified rather than treated as one or the other.

For your shortlist, record the earbud runtime and case-inclusive total in separate columns. If a maker or review does not say what a figure includes, mark the basis as unclear rather than inferring it from a large total. Battery estimates also need context: stated conditions may not match your listening level or feature use. Compare like with like where the details are available, and treat advertised runtime as a claim rather than a promise of your personal daily result.

Match controls and sound to everyday use

Controls matter when you need to pause audio, handle a call, or adjust playback without reaching for your phone. Compare whether a model uses buttons or touch controls and whether its control layout is comfortable for you. Review guides identify controls and connectivity as relevant selection factors, but the useful choice depends on your habits: try the controls if possible and verify device-switching features in the specifications rather than assuming them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For sound, start with the open design’s inherent trade-off: ambient sound remains accessible, while isolation and immersion are generally lower than with sealed earbuds. Do not infer bass, tonal balance, or sound quality from the category name. TechRadar’s OpenFit 2+ review praises its fit and sound, but that assessment applies to its review of that model. Individual preferences and fit can change the experience.

Everyday use includes the small interactions you repeat. Check whether the controls are easy for you to find and operate, especially if you expect to answer calls or pause audio without looking at your phone. A physical button and a touch surface are different control approaches; neither is automatically preferable for every listener. Use a demonstration or review that describes the controls, and check the current specifications for any functions you rely on.

Also make a deliberate sound-versus-awareness choice rather than assuming that an open fit is simply a more comfortable version of a sealed earbud. If music immersion and isolation are priorities, a sealed design may better match them. If hearing more ambient sound matters to you, open-ear construction may fit the purpose, with lower isolation as the trade-off. Sound quality itself still requires model-specific listening or review evidence.

Shokz OpenFit 2+: an ear-hook example

TechRadar reports 11 hours of earbud runtime and 48 hours with the case, an IP55 rating, and a weight of 9.4 g per bud. Its review praises fit and sound, while noting that calls can be less clear in wind or while running. Those details can help you decide what to investigate, but they do not prove that the fit or call results will be the same for you.

HUAWEI FreeClip 2: a clip-on example

SoundGuys identifies the FreeClip 2 as a clip-on design and reports IP57 water resistance. Its reviewer describes the earbuds as comfortable during extended listening. Comfort remains individual, so use that observation as a review finding rather than a prediction about your own ears.

Nothing Ear (open): a manufacturer-guidance example

Nothing describes Ear (open) as open sound technology designed for movement and advertises 30 hours of battery on its US product page. Its support guidance says the fit may need adjustment because ears vary, says glasses can be worn with adjustment, and recommends wiping sweat promptly. The runtime is a manufacturer claim, and the cited information does not establish whether the figure is earbud-only or case-inclusive.

Check the price where you plan to buy, then weigh it against the features and test evidence that matter to you: a lower price does not resolve a poor fit, unclear call evidence, or a battery figure with an unknown basis. If you use a product comparison, keep design type, verified moisture rating, battery basis, call findings, and checked price visible as separate criteria.

Specifications, availability, and ratings can vary by market and change over time. Check the current regional product information before relying on a listed model, rating, price, or battery claim. The examples here reflect English-language or US-facing source material, not every region’s catalog.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing by category name alone: Open-ear covers more than one construction; compare the actual hook or clip shape.
  • Assuming a workout claim means waterproof: Verify the exact rating and care directions for the model.
  • Taking microphone marketing as proof of call performance: Look for listening tests in the environments where you plan to call.
  • Comparing battery totals as if they measured the same thing: Separate earbud runtime from case-inclusive runtime, and retain the manufacturer-versus-review distinction.
  • Expecting someone else’s fit result to predict yours: Comfort and stability vary with ear shape, adjustment, glasses, and activity.
  • Treating a review finding as a guarantee: A reviewer’s fit, sound, or call result describes a particular model and test, not every wearer or setting.
  • Assuming a feature exists because it is important to you: Verify controls, connectivity, device switching, regional specifications, and the basis of each claim before buying.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are open-ear earbuds the same as bone-conduction headphones?

No. Open-ear describes a way of wearing earbuds, including ear-hook and clip-on constructions. Bone-conduction headphones transmit sound differently, so compare them as a distinct approach rather than assuming the terms are interchangeable.

Are open-ear earbuds good for running and workouts?

They can suit some workouts, but check two things separately: whether the fit stays secure during your movements and the exact water or sweat rating for that model. A fitness claim is not a waterproof guarantee. Follow the maker’s care instructions; Nothing, for example, recommends wiping sweat promptly from Ear (open).

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I wear open-ear earbuds with glasses?

It depends on the design and your fit. Nothing’s guidance says Ear (open) can be worn with glasses with adjustment, but that advice is specific to that model. Try the earbuds with your own glasses when possible and check for pressure or movement.

Do open-ear earbuds have good call quality outdoors?

Call performance varies by model and conditions. Wind and movement can reduce intelligibility, so look for independent microphone samples or listening tests that include the conditions where you call. TechRadar reports that Shokz OpenFit 2+ calls can be less clear in wind or while running; that finding is model-specific.

How should I compare open-ear earbud battery life?

Separate runtime from the earbuds themselves from total runtime that includes the charging case. Check whether the figure is a manufacturer claim or a review result and note when its basis is not stated. For example, Nothing advertises 30 hours for Ear (open), but the cited US product information does not clarify whether that figure is earbud-only or case-inclusive.

Do open-ear earbuds block noise like sealed earbuds?

Generally, no. Open designs let ambient sound reach you and typically offer less isolation and immersion than sealed in-ear earbuds. Choose based on whether awareness or a more enclosed listening experience matters more for your use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Choose by fit first: compare ear-hook and clip-on shapes, and assess comfort and retention during the movements you actually make. Then verify model-specific call tests, moisture ratings and care instructions, battery measurement basis, controls, and current regional details. Open-ear earbuds trade some isolation and immersion for ambient awareness; the right choice is the one whose fit and trade-offs suit your routine.
