What matters most in flight headphones?
Noise cancellation for engine rumble
Active noise cancellation (ANC) is especially useful against the steady, low-frequency rumble of an aircraft. RTINGS says ANC headphones reduce this type of sound more effectively than passive isolation alone. Compare independent assessments of cabin and engine noise rather than relying only on a manufacturer’s general “noise cancelling” label. ANC reduces noise; it does not make a cabin silent.

Comfort over several hours
Fit is personal. For over-ear headphones, consider earpad depth, clamping force, headband pressure, heat, and whether the cups work with your glasses. A reviewer’s comfort assessment is useful context, not a guarantee that the same model will suit your head and ears. If possible, try headphones on before committing to a long-haul choice.

Compare runtime with noise cancellation enabled against your longest travel day, including layovers. Keep manufacturer estimates separate from reviewer measurements: test protocols differ, so figures from different sources are not directly interchangeable. A measured result is evidence from that reviewer’s test, not a promise of the same runtime for every listener.

Packability and protection
Check weight, bulk, folding design, and what kind of case comes in the box. A hard-shell case can help protect headphones in a carry-on, but first verify that the included case is not already adequate. Confirm the case dimensions and folding arrangement for the exact model.
Seatback compatibility
Some seatback systems use a wired audio jack, while wireless headphones may need a Bluetooth transmitter to connect. Over-ear headphones or earbuds?
Over-ear models are worth considering if you prefer their fit for extended listening and want a substantial case around the headphones. Earbuds take up less space and may suit travelers who prioritize a smaller kit. Neither style is automatically more comfortable: fit preference and the seal each model achieves matter. How to use headphones with seatback entertainment
- Check the seatback system. If you can confirm the aircraft or seat configuration, find out whether it has a wired audio jack or offers Bluetooth pairing. Availability and fittings vary.
- Check the headphones. Confirm whether your model supports wired audio and whether its cable is included. For example, RTINGS says the Sony WH-1000XM6 connects by wire to in-flight systems with an audio jack; SoundGuys reports a detachable cable and included airplane adapter with the Sennheiser MOMENTUM 4 Wireless.
- Match the connection. If the seatback has a wired jack and your headphones are wireless, a Bluetooth transmitter such as AirFly Pro is one possible route. Bose describes plugging a transmitter into a seatback jack and pairing it with wireless headphones. Verify that the exact plug and transmitter are compatible before you buy.
- Pack the right accessories. Bring the headphone cable or compatible adapter if you plan to use wired audio. Check what is already included before purchasing a separate airplane adapter.

- Choose headphones with independent evidence of reducing low-frequency cabin rumble.
- Prioritize the fit you can tolerate for your usual flight length; try them on if possible.
