How to Choose Network Bandwidth for an AI Training Cluster

Choose an AI training cluster’s network from the workload outward: first identify how much accelerator-to-accelerator communication the job creates, then size the GPU fabric, topology and NIC attachments around that pattern. Bandwidth per GPU is a useful planning metric, but it is not a universal formula. Port speed alone is never proof that a training job will achieve the expected throughput; validate the complete path with representative collective-communication tests.

Keep the east-west training fabric distinct from storage, data-ingestion, checkpoint, logging and management traffic unless you have explicitly modelled their contention. Published figures such as NVIDIA’s guidance for specific HGX 8-GPU platforms are valuable reference points, but they should not be presented as requirements for every accelerator, server or model.

What network bandwidth means in a training cluster

Distributed training divides a model or a batch across accelerators. Those accelerators must exchange gradients, parameters, activations or other state repeatedly while each training step runs. The network carrying this inter-server traffic is the east-west compute fabric. Its useful properties are sustained throughput, low and predictable latency, congestion behaviour and a topology that gives every participating GPU a fair path to its peers.

This is different from north-south traffic: users connecting to the cluster, schedulers, monitoring systems and external services. A cluster can have very fast uplinks to users and still train slowly if the GPU-to-GPU fabric is under-sized or oversubscribed.

NVIDIA’s reference-architecture material describes the last field in one configuration notation as average east-west network bandwidth per GPU in GbE. That notation is a good way to make an assumption visible in a design document. It is not, by itself, a workload model or a promise that every GPU can sustain that rate. See NVIDIA’s Design Tenets of NVIDIA Reference Architectures for the architectural context.

Start with the job, not the switch port

Before selecting adapters or switches, record the communication pattern the cluster must support. The following questions determine whether a high-speed fabric will be used efficiently.

Is the job single-node or multi-node?

If all GPUs used by a job are in one server, its most important exchanges may use the server’s internal interconnect rather than the network. The network still matters for storage and control traffic, but adding external bandwidth will not accelerate a workload that never leaves the node. As soon as a job spans servers, every synchronization round can become sensitive to network throughput and latency.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How many accelerators are in each server?

Record the accelerator count, model, memory capacity and physical placement. An eight-GPU server with one shared NIC has a different contention profile from an eight-GPU server with one adapter per GPU or with multiple independent network rails. The server’s PCIe layout, NUMA domains and GPU-to-NIC affinity can limit usable bandwidth even when the adapters and switches advertise the same line rate.

What does the training framework communicate?

Data parallel training commonly uses all-reduce or related collectives to exchange gradients. Tensor and pipeline parallelism can introduce additional, latency-sensitive exchanges. Checkpointing and input pipelines create bursty transfers that may overlap with collectives. Ask the framework owner for message sizes, collective frequency, overlap with computation and the number of simultaneous jobs; do not infer those values from model parameter count alone.

How large is the intended scale?

Write down the number of servers in a job, the number of servers in a zone and the largest cluster you expect to operate. A design that is non-blocking inside one rack can become oversubscribed at a leaf-to-spine or inter-zone tier. The bandwidth target must therefore be stated at both node level and fabric level.

Separate the training fabric from other traffic

Make the network boundary explicit in the design. At minimum, identify these traffic classes:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Compute fabric: GPU-to-GPU east-west traffic for distributed training.
  • Storage and ingestion: dataset reads, object-storage transfers and prefetching.
  • Checkpoint and logging: writes of model state, metrics and traces, often in bursts at step or epoch boundaries.
  • Management and user access: provisioning, schedulers, SSH, monitoring and service traffic.

NVIDIA’s architecture guidance discusses separating high-performance paths from other traffic. Meta Engineering describes a production design with frontend networks for ingestion, checkpointing and logging and a backend dedicated to distributed training. Meta states, “We built a dedicated backend network specifically for distributed training,” in its article RoCE networks for distributed AI training at scale. That is evidence of one large-scale implementation, not a requirement that every small cluster build two physically separate networks.

If you share links, quantify the overlap. For example, a checkpoint burst that consumes the same uplink as an all-reduce can increase tail latency even when the average daily utilization looks low. If you cannot measure or control that contention, reserve capacity or isolate the traffic with separate adapters, rails, switches or carefully tested quality-of-service policies.

  1. Measure or obtain communication volume. For a representative step, determine how many bytes each GPU sends and receives in collectives and point-to-point exchanges. Include overlap and concurrency when several jobs share the fabric.
  2. Set a communication-time objective. Decide how much of the step may be spent waiting for the network. A target such as “the collective should remain hidden under computation” is more useful than a port-rate target.
  3. Calculate an initial sustained rate. As an engineering estimate, divide the bytes that must cross the fabric during the chosen interval by the allowed communication time, then add headroom for protocol overhead, traffic bursts and concurrent jobs. Document the message pattern and assumptions next to the result.
  4. Map the rate to each GPU and node. Divide the aggregate requirement by the number of GPUs only when traffic is balanced. Hot GPUs, unequal PCIe paths or a shared adapter can make the busiest path the limiting factor.
  5. Check every fabric tier. Verify host links, leaf ports, spine links, inter-zone links and the number of independent planes. The smallest or most oversubscribed tier sets the practical ceiling.

This calculation is a starting hypothesis. The cited architecture sources do not establish a universal equation that maps model parameters, batch size or accelerator type directly to required network bandwidth. Replace assumptions with measurements from the actual training stack as soon as a prototype is available.

Use published platform guidance within its scope

NVIDIA publishes a concrete recommendation for multi-node NVIDIA HGX H100, H200 and B200 platforms configured as eight-GPU servers. The figures below describe total compute-network bandwidth per server; they are not universal minimums for all AI clusters.

HGX platform guidance Network configuration cited by NVIDIA How to interpret it
Minimum recommendation Above 200 GB/s total compute-network bandwidth, represented as 8 × 200 Gb/s or 4 × 400 Gb/s NICs A platform-specific minimum for multi-node 8-GPU HGX H100/H200/B200 systems
Recommended level 400 GB/s total compute-network bandwidth, represented as 8 × 400 Gb/s NICs A higher level for those same listed HGX platforms, not a general requirement for every model or server
Software-stack topology Accommodate a 1:1 GPU-to-NIC ratio Use as a design goal for the NVIDIA software stack; verify the server’s actual PCIe and rail topology
Adapter capability example BlueField-3 SuperNIC listed with up to 400 Gb/s support A link-speed capability, not proof of 400 Gb/s sustained end-to-end application throughput

Remember the unit conversion: 8 × 200 Gb/s equals 1,600 Gb/s, or 200 GB/s when dividing by eight. Likewise, 8 × 400 Gb/s equals 3,200 Gb/s, or 400 GB/s. The advertised sum assumes that the adapters, host buses, switches, optics, software and workload can all use the capacity; it does not account for protocol overhead, contention or an imbalanced topology. The source for these platform figures is NVIDIA Components — NVIDIA HGX AI Factory (HGX H100, H200, B200).

Design the node and fabric together

Match NICs to GPUs

Count adapters per server and identify which GPU is attached to which NIC and PCIe root complex. A nominal one-to-one mapping can be undermined by a switchable PCIe slot, a shared root complex or a software configuration that sends several GPUs through one adapter. Document GPU-to-NIC affinity and test the intended process placement.

Balance network rails

Multiple independent rails can spread traffic and provide failure isolation. Balance the rails across GPUs, PCIe domains, leaf switches and power domains so that one rail is not a hidden bottleneck. If a job can continue after a rail or adapter fails, state the reduced-performance mode and confirm that routing and collective software handle it correctly.

Check leaf, spine and inter-zone capacity

Calculate the ratio of downlink capacity to uplink capacity at every tier. A non-blocking design gives the participating servers enough aggregate uplink capacity to communicate simultaneously; an oversubscribed design intentionally provides less. Oversubscription can be acceptable for traffic that is bursty or locality-aware, but it must be included in the expected collective performance and scheduling policy.

Meta’s described environment uses a non-blocking backend inside AI zones and oversubscribed connectivity between zones, with topology-aware scheduling to keep jobs within suitable boundaries when possible. That approach illustrates why “the switch is 400 Gb/s” is incomplete: the path and placement of the job determine how much of that rate is available.

Plan independent failure domains

Decide whether the cluster needs one fabric plane or multiple planes. Independent planes can preserve partial operation after an adapter, cable, switch or rail failure, but they add hardware, cabling and configuration work. Include maintenance procedures and failover behaviour in the capacity plan; a design that is fast only when every component is healthy may not meet an operational service objective.

Choose between InfiniBand and Ethernet with RoCE

InfiniBand and Ethernet using RoCE are both established approaches for GPU clusters. The available sources do not provide a universal winner for price, performance or operational complexity. Select the fabric that fits the accelerator platform, existing skills, required congestion behaviour and training software, then benchmark it under the traffic pattern you will run.

Decision axis Questions to answer
Usable bandwidth What sustained per-GPU and per-node throughput does the complete path deliver, not merely the port rate?
Latency and consistency How do median and tail collective times behave when other jobs or checkpoint traffic are active?
Congestion control Which lossless or near-lossless mechanisms, queue policies and telemetry are required, and who will operate them?
Topology and oversubscription Are the leaf-to-spine and inter-zone ratios appropriate for the job placement policy?
GPU and PCIe attachment Can each GPU reach the intended adapter without a shared or remote bottleneck?
Isolation and failure Can compute traffic be isolated from storage, and what happens when a rail or switch fails?
Software compatibility Does the collective library, driver stack and orchestration system support the chosen transport and topology?
Total cost Include adapters, switches, optics, cabling, power, spares, monitoring and specialist operations—not just the NIC price.

NVIDIA’s current reference-architecture page emphasizes Ethernet recommendations while noting that future guidance may include InfiniBand for some workloads. Meta documents a production RoCEv2 design. These examples show that the decision is context-dependent; neither source establishes a blanket rule for all clusters.

Validate the deployed path before declaring success

A link-rate calculation is not a performance result. After the hardware and software stack are installed, run multi-node NCCL all-reduce tests that resemble the intended number of GPUs, message sizes, process placement and job scale. NVIDIA’s validation guidance also calls for verifying which transport and fabric were actually used, rather than assuming that traffic followed the planned path. Follow the procedures in Validating a Cluster | NVIDIA AI Cluster Runtime v0.21.1.

  1. Establish a baseline. Test one server, then two servers, then the largest representative job size. Record collective time, achieved bandwidth, CPU use and GPU utilization.
  2. Confirm placement. Verify that each process is bound to the intended GPU and NIC and that traffic traverses the compute fabric rather than a management or storage path.
  3. Test realistic collectives. Use all-reduce and any additional collective or point-to-point patterns used by the framework. Vary message size because small latency-sensitive exchanges and large bandwidth-dominated exchanges expose different limits.
  4. Add contention deliberately. Repeat tests while storage reads, checkpoint writes or another training job uses shared links. The difference between isolated and contended results is your practical isolation cost.
  5. Test scale and failure. Include the largest planned node count and, where supported, remove a rail or link to observe degraded performance and recovery.
  6. Compare with a scoped expectation. Compare the result with the platform-specific design target and the workload assumptions, not with the sum of every advertised port.

Common sizing mistakes and how to correct them

Mistake Why it causes trouble Correction
Treating a switch or NIC rate as application bandwidth Protocol overhead, PCIe limits, topology and contention reduce delivered throughput. Measure end-to-end collectives and verify the transport.
Applying HGX numbers to every accelerator NVIDIA’s 200 GB/s and 400 GB/s figures are scoped to listed multi-node 8-GPU HGX H100/H200/B200 platforms. Use them as a reference only after confirming the same platform scope.
Dividing total bandwidth evenly among GPUs without checking affinity Shared NICs or unbalanced PCIe paths can make a subset of GPUs bottlenecks. Map GPU-to-NIC connectivity and benchmark each rail.
Ignoring checkpoint and ingestion bursts Short bursts can raise collective latency even when average utilization is modest. Separate traffic or reserve and test capacity under overlap.
Designing only for one rack Leaf-to-spine or inter-zone oversubscription can dominate at larger job sizes. Model every tier and use topology-aware placement where appropriate.
Choosing a fabric by reputation alone Operational skill, congestion tuning and software compatibility affect real outcomes. Compare both candidate designs on the same workload and failure tests.
Skipping transport verification A test can pass while using an unintended interface or route. Confirm the selected fabric and interfaces with the cluster validation tooling.

Worked planning examples

Small two-server development cluster

Suppose two servers each contain four accelerators and the objective is model development rather than maximum-scale production. First measure whether the framework’s collectives span both servers and how often input and checkpoint traffic overlap. A modest fabric may be sufficient if jobs are small and traffic is isolated, while a shared link can become a visible bottleneck if every GPU participates in frequent all-reduce operations. The correct target comes from the measured collective time and the desired step time, not from multiplying the number of GPUs by an arbitrary port speed.

Eight-GPU HGX production node

For a multi-node HGX H100, H200 or B200 deployment, use NVIDIA’s scoped guidance as the initial hardware envelope: above 200 GB/s total compute-network bandwidth as the cited minimum representation, with 400 GB/s as the recommended level and a 1:1 GPU-to-NIC goal for the NVIDIA software stack. Then check the exact server implementation, PCIe topology, switch radix, optics and rail balance. Validate the resulting system with the intended collective sizes before expanding the cluster.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Multiple AI zones

At larger scale, decide whether jobs should remain within a non-blocking zone or cross an oversubscribed boundary. If cross-zone jobs are necessary, measure the penalty and make the scheduler topology-aware so communication-heavy jobs receive a suitable placement. Keep frontend ingestion and checkpoint traffic from consuming the same constrained inter-zone links without an explicit capacity and quality-of-service plan.

A practical bandwidth-sizing checklist

  • List accelerator model, count per server, server count and maximum job size.
  • Describe the framework’s collectives, message sizes, frequency and overlap with computation.
  • State the desired communication time or step-time budget.
  • Calculate an initial per-GPU and per-node sustained-rate target with documented assumptions.
  • Separate compute, storage, ingestion, checkpoint, logging and management traffic—or model their contention.
  • Map every GPU to its NIC, PCIe path, rail and switch ports.
  • Check leaf, spine and inter-zone oversubscription and define failure behaviour.
  • Compare InfiniBand and Ethernet/RoCE on throughput, latency, congestion control, operations, compatibility and total cost.
  • Run representative multi-node NCCL collectives and verify the actual transport.
  • Repeat under realistic contention, at planned scale and in a degraded-link scenario.

The finished design should state a workload-specific bandwidth target, the hardware and topology that deliver it, the traffic it excludes, and the measurements that prove it. That level of specificity is more useful than a universal “bandwidth per GPU” number because it remains tied to the job and platform you actually operate.
