Milkweed provides monarch caterpillars with their host plant and food; nectar plants feed adult butterflies. A useful habitat includes both, selected for your region and the conditions where they will grow.
Why a monarch garden needs both milkweed and nectar plants
Monarch caterpillars rely on milkweed as a host and food plant. Adult monarchs take energy from nectar in flowering plants. Nectar flowers do not replace milkweed for caterpillars, so plan for both roles. Monarch Joint Venture recommends choosing native plants suited to regional conditions.

How to choose plants for your region and site
- Start with your location. Use your state or a more precise location when searching. A broad region can include different soils, rainfall, elevations and plant ranges.
- Find regional plant references. Consult the Xerces Society’s regional milkweed guides and its monarch nectar plant lists. Western gardeners should also consult the Western Monarch Milkweed Mapper linked from the milkweed guide directory.
- Check native range and distribution. Choose candidates native to and appropriate for your location. A species sold nationally is not necessarily native or suitable where you live.
- Match the garden conditions. Compare each candidate’s light and soil-moisture needs with the planting site. A regional list narrows the options, but not every listed plant will suit every garden.
- Plan for flowering time. Check when monarchs are present locally and select plants whose bloom periods provide flowers then. Use bloom timing to fill gaps in the garden’s existing flowering calendar.
- Confirm what you are buying. Ask a native plant nursery or seed supplier to confirm the plant’s identity and origin. Availability varies by supplier.
Use regional lists as a starting point, not a guarantee
The Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation says its monarch nectar recommendations draw on nearly 24,000 observations of monarchs nectaring on 358 native plant species, organized into 15 regions. The Society also describes its lists as working documents and cautions that site-specific suitability needs further checking. Use the lists to identify candidates, then verify each one against local references and your garden’s conditions. Xerces regional plant lists

Use Xerces’ location-based tool to narrow the choices
In an announcement dated July 30, 2026, Xerces described its Plants for Monarchs tool, which lets users enter a location and filter native host and nectar plants using preferences such as flower color and sun exposure. It can also produce a shopping list with nearby or online suppliers. The filters can help build a shortlist, but check the final candidates against regional references and site conditions. Supplier availability may vary. Xerces’ Plants for Monarchs announcement

Find locally appropriate plants and seeds
Once you have chosen suitable species, look for native plants or seed from a regional nursery or supplier. If using the tool’s supplier-oriented list, confirm that the offered species and their origin match your choices. Avoid assuming that a generic national butterfly mix is regionally appropriate without checking its species composition.
Monarch Joint Venture identifies locally sourced native plants as a way to support regional suitability. When buying, ask the nursery or supplier to confirm plant identity and origin; the availability of a particular species can vary.

What the population-decline figure means
In its July 30, 2026 announcement of Plants for Monarchs, the Xerces Society reported that monarch butterfly populations have declined by over 80% in recent decades, in part due to loss of native milkweed and nectar plants. This is the Society’s reported claim in that announcement, not a separate estimate made here. Xerces’ announcement

- MONARCH BUTTERFLY HABITAT: Common milkweed (Asclepias syriaca) is a host plant for monarch butterfly larvae. Planting this native wildflower helps support monarch populations by providing a food source for caterpillars. Suitable for USDA Zones 3–9.
- FRAGRANT BLOOMS: This variety grows 3–5 ft. tall and produces scented pink to mauve flower clusters, 2–4 inches wide. Grows best in full sun to partial shade. The flowers attract various pollinators, including native bees, honeybees, hummingbirds, and hoverflies.
- PERENNIAL GROWTH HABIT: As a hardy perennial in USDA Zones 3–9, common milkweed typically returns each year through rhizomes and natural reseeding. Seeds are open-pollinated.
- PLANTING AND GERMINATION: Seeds can be direct sown in fall to allow for natural cold-stratification, or cold-stratified in the refrigerator for 30 days prior to spring planting. Plant seeds 1/8–1/4 inch deep in well-drained soil. Germination generally occurs at 60–70°F.
- ADAPTABLE TO VARIOUS SOILS: Once established, common milkweed is drought-tolerant and performs well in average to poor, well-drained soil. Requires little supplemental watering or fertilization once established. Seed pods may remain through the fall to provide interest in the landscape.
