Start by combining the position you use most with your body weight, then treat the result as a starting range—not a prescription. Side sleepers usually need enough cushioning for the shoulders and hips. Back sleepers need a balance of contouring and resistance under the midsection. Stomach sleepers generally need more resistance to prevent the hips and abdomen from sinking. A heavier person usually compresses the same mattress more deeply than a lighter person, so the identical model can feel softer to one sleeper and firmer to another.
The right choice is the surface that keeps you comfortable and reasonably aligned without creating pressure at your shoulders, hips, or other contact points. Firmness ratings help narrow the field, but they are not standardized, and “firm” does not automatically mean supportive.

Use this firmness chart as your starting point
Sleep Foundation’s 1–10 firmness guide combines sleeping position and body weight. The ranges below are indicative consumer guidance, not a clinical standard. A mattress rated 6 by one manufacturer may not feel like a 6 from another.
| Sleep position | Under 130 lb | 130–230 lb | Over 230 lb |
|---|---|---|---|
| Side | Soft (3) to medium (5) | Medium-soft (4) to medium (5) | Medium-firm (6) to firm (7) |
| Back | Soft (3) to medium (5) | Medium (5) to firm (7) | Firm (7–8) to extra firm (9) |
| Stomach | Medium-soft (4) to medium-firm (6) | Medium (5) to firm (7) | Firm (7–8) to extra firm (9) |
| Combination | Soft (3) to medium (5) | Medium-soft (4) to medium-firm (6) | Firm (7–8) |
For combination sleepers, begin with the position you occupy most often. If you change positions frequently, start near the middle of the applicable range so the mattress does not feel excessively plush in one position or uncomfortably rigid in another.

Firmness and support are different
Firmness describes how the surface feels when you lie down: plush, yielding, buoyant, or hard. Support describes how well the entire mattress holds your body in a reasonably neutral posture and prevents excessive sagging. Sleep Foundation notes that consumers often confuse these separate traits.
A softer mattress can still be supportive if its comfort layers cushion pressure while its deeper support core resists bottoming out. Conversely, a very firm mattress can be a poor fit if it leaves gaps beneath the waist, pushes painfully into the shoulders, or prevents a side sleeper’s hips from settling naturally. Judge both the immediate surface sensation and what happens to your posture after several minutes.
Why the same model feels different to different people
- Body weight: More weight generally produces deeper compression, making a mattress feel softer and sometimes less stable.
- Body shape: Two people with the same weight can load a mattress differently. A pronounced waist, broad shoulders, or heavier hips changes where pressure is concentrated.
- Height and leverage: A taller sleeper may distribute weight over a different area, while a shorter sleeper may concentrate it more.
- Materials: Memory foam, latex, springs, and hybrid designs have different responses even when their advertised firmness numbers match.
- Temperature and time: Some foams soften with body heat, and a mattress can feel different after several minutes than it does during a quick showroom test.
How each sleep position changes the decision
Side sleepers: protect the shoulders and hips
Side sleeping concentrates body weight on a narrower line through the shoulder and hip. A comfort layer with enough contouring lets those areas sink without allowing the pelvis to twist. If the surface is too firm, you may feel pressure at the shoulder or hip and wake with numbness or soreness. If it is too soft, your torso may sink substantially while your legs and shoulders remain higher, creating an uncomfortable bend.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteUse the side-sleeper row in the chart to choose an initial band, then look closely at the mattress description for pressure relief and the thickness and resilience of its comfort layers. Heavier side sleepers often need a more substantial comfort system plus stronger deep support; simply choosing the softest option can lead to excessive sinkage.
Back sleepers: balance contouring with midsection resistance
On your back, the mattress should cushion the natural curves of the spine while resisting downward movement under the pelvis and abdomen. Too little contouring can leave a gap beneath the lower back and create pressure. Too much softness can let the hips drop below the chest, producing a hammock-like feel.
Use the back-sleeper range as a broad shortlist rather than a guarantee. Pay special attention to how the mattress supports your midsection when you lie still for several minutes. A surface that initially feels pleasantly soft may become unstable if your hips continue to sink.

Stomach sleepers: limit hip and abdomen sinkage
When you sleep on your stomach, your heavier central tissues press downward. A mattress with more resistance usually keeps the hips and abdomen from sinking deeply and reduces the feeling that your lower back is being pulled into an arch. However, “firmer” should not be interpreted as “hardest available.” A surface that is too rigid can create pressure at the ribs, knees, or chest and may be uncomfortable enough to disturb sleep.

If you occasionally roll onto your side, make sure the surface still has enough cushioning for your shoulders.
Combination sleepers: choose for the position you actually use
Count the position in which you spend the most time, not the position in which you fall asleep for a few minutes. If you rotate between side, back, and stomach sleeping, a middle-of-the-range feel is often a practical compromise. Responsive materials can make turning easier than deeply hugging foam, while zoned support may provide extra resistance under the center without making the entire surface hard.
How body weight changes the firmness you feel
Under 130 pounds
Lighter sleepers often do not compress the upper layers very far, so a mattress can feel firmer than its label suggests. A person in this group may need more surface cushioning to feel pressure relief, especially when sleeping on the side. Do not automatically choose an extremely soft bed: insufficient deep support can still allow uncomfortable sagging.
Between 130 and 230 pounds
This broad middle group usually experiences a mattress close to its advertised feel, but there is still substantial variation by body shape and position. Use the relevant chart range, then decide whether you prefer more contouring or easier movement. Couples at opposite ends of this band may notice markedly different sensations on the same side of a bed.
Over 230 pounds
Heavier sleepers generally compress the comfort layers farther and may reach the support core sooner. A model that feels medium-firm to a lighter partner can feel soft, unstable, or prone to bottoming out. Look for adequate usable support depth, edge stability if you sit or sleep near the perimeter, and a comfort layer that cushions pressure without allowing your midsection to drop excessively. “Heavier” does not mean every sleeper needs the firmest mattress; side sleepers still need shoulder and hip accommodation.

Why firmness numbers cannot be compared perfectly
There is no universally accepted measurement for mattress firmness. Manufacturers may use different scales, test methods, and descriptions, so a “medium” or “6” is only a rough comparison within a brand. Compare the maker’s explanation of the surface feel, comfort-layer materials, transition layer, support core, and expected sinkage instead of treating the number as a laboratory measurement.
Two mattresses with the same rating can also differ in responsiveness. One may let you change position easily; another may slowly contour around you. Neither behavior is universally better. Match it to whether you value pressure relief, ease of movement, or a more floating sensation.
A practical shopping method
- Record your usual position. Note whether you remain on one side, move between positions, or spend substantial time on your stomach or back.
- Record your body weight and build. Include where you carry weight, because distribution affects pressure and sinkage.
- Shortlist a range. Use the chart, then keep at least two nearby firmness levels in consideration rather than searching for one exact number.
- Read the construction details. Identify the comfort material, its approximate thickness when stated, the transition layer, the support core, and any zoning. These details explain how the stated feel is produced.
- Assess pressure and sinkage. On your side, check the shoulder and hip. On your back or stomach, check whether the pelvis drops noticeably. This is a comfort check, not a medical or diagnostic test.
- Account for movement. Turn from side to back and back again. If you must struggle against a deep cradle, a more responsive option may suit you better.
- Check the edge and sleeping area. Sit near the edge and lie in your normal position. Excessive roll-off or a compressed usable surface can matter as much as the center feel.
- Verify the actual trial and return policy. Read the terms for the exact seller and model before ordering. Policies can differ by manufacturer, retailer, purchase channel, delivery method, fees, pickup arrangements, and refund timing.
How to tell whether a mattress is too soft or too firm
Signs it may be too firm
- Persistent pressure at the shoulder, hip, ribs, or knees, especially when side sleeping.
- Numbness or tingling that eases when you move off the mattress.
- A visible or felt gap beneath the waist when lying on your side or back.
- Frequent repositioning because the surface does not yield enough for your curves.
Signs it may be too soft
- Your pelvis or abdomen sinks distinctly lower than your chest and legs.
- You feel trapped in a depression and have difficulty turning.
- Your lower back feels strained after resting, rather than simply unfamiliar with a new bed.
- You bottom out and feel the firmer support structure through the comfort layers.
These signs are clues about fit, not proof of a particular spinal condition. Give a new mattress enough time for your body to adapt within the seller’s allowed trial period, but do not ignore severe or persistent pain.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsChoosing for two sleepers
List both people’s weights, primary positions, and firmness preferences before shopping. A compromise in the middle of the two preferred feels may work when their needs are close. When one partner is a much lighter side sleeper and the other is a heavier back or stomach sleeper, a single uniform surface may satisfy neither person completely.
Some mattresses are available with different firmness on each side, and adjustable bases or split configurations can provide another way to accommodate different preferences. Confirm that the exact configuration has the same return and warranty terms as the standard version. Motion isolation, usable edge area, and each sleeper’s tendency to disturb the other should also be considered, but do not let those features obscure the basic pressure-and-support check.

What evidence says about medium-firm mattresses and pain
A 2015 systematic review of controlled mattress-design trials reported that subjectively medium-firm and self-adjusted mattresses were associated with better comfort, sleep quality, and spinal alignment within the studies it reviewed. That finding does not establish medium-firm as the best choice for every body, position, or mattress design.
A randomized, double-blind, controlled, multicentre trial published in The Lancet found that a medium-firm mattress improved pain and disability compared with a firm mattress among people with chronic nonspecific low-back pain. The trial did not test every mattress, sleeper, or diagnosis. It should not be read as a guarantee that changing firmness will resolve back pain or as a substitute for medical care.
If pain is severe, persistent, worsening, associated with weakness or numbness, or otherwise concerning, seek qualified medical advice. Mattress selection is a comfort and shopping decision, not a diagnosis.
Do not forget pillow height
Changing mattress firmness can change how far your shoulder and torso sink. Sleep Foundation’s pillow guidance links a softer, more yielding mattress with greater sinkage and potentially a lower-loft pillow; a firmer surface may require more loft to keep the head and neck comfortable. Treat this as a small adjustment after you choose the mattress, not as a reason to compromise on the mattress’s pressure relief and support.

A concise decision checklist
- Which position occupies most of your night?
- What is your current body weight, and where is it concentrated?
- Which range in the chart gives you a sensible starting band?
- Does the construction provide both pressure relief and deep resistance?
- Could the same mattress feel different for your partner?
- Can you test it under a real trial and return policy?
- When you lie on it, do shoulders and hips feel cushioned without the pelvis sagging?
- Can you turn and get out of bed without fighting a deep depression?
Bottom line
Choose a firmness range from your dominant sleep position and body weight, then validate it against your own pressure points, sinkage, movement, and alignment. Use manufacturer ratings only as rough labels, compare the underlying construction, and preserve an exit route through a clearly understood trial and return policy. The best mattress is not the hardest or softest one; it is the one that supports your body without forcing it into pain or excessive pressure.
