How to Choose Liquid Cooling for High-Density AI Servers

Choose liquid cooling from the server outward, not from a rack-density headline inward. First confirm the server platform’s approved cooling configuration, coolant interfaces and operating limits. Then match the technology—direct-to-chip cold plates, immersion or a rear-door heat exchanger—to the facility’s water loops, heat-rejection plant, reliability objectives, service procedures and retrofit constraints. A coolant distribution unit (CDU) is usually the bridge between the facility water system and the technology cooling system, but it cannot compensate for incompatible hardware or an undersized heat-rejection system.

What liquid cooling must accomplish

AI servers concentrate far more heat in CPUs, GPUs, memory and power-delivery components than a conventional general-purpose rack. Liquid cooling captures heat close to its source or at the rack exhaust, transports it through a controlled loop and rejects it through a facility system. The complete design includes IT equipment, manifolds or heat exchangers, a CDU, pumps, controls, piping and the plant that ultimately rejects—or potentially reuses—the heat.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Open Compute Project (OCP) workstreams group the main approaches into cold-plate cooling, immersion cooling and door heat exchangers. OCP also treats coolant distribution, quick disconnects, tubing, manifolds and facility integration as distinct engineering concerns. That matters because a cooling method that works on a laboratory server can fail in a deployed rack if the facility cannot provide the required flow, pressure, temperature or water quality.

The two liquid loops

Most liquid-cooled designs distinguish between a facility water system (FWS) and a technology cooling system (TCS). The FWS belongs to the building or data-center plant. The TCS circulates the coolant that reaches the servers or rack heat exchanger. A CDU transfers heat between the loops while pumping and controlling the TCS side.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Keeping the loops separate can let the operator apply different water-quality controls to the facility and IT sides. It can also help maintain TCS supply temperature above the room’s dew point, reducing condensation risk. The CDU must still be compatible with the chemistry, materials, pressure and temperature requirements of both loops.

Begin with the server manufacturer’s approved envelope

Do not select a CDU or rack design before obtaining the exact server documentation. “Liquid-ready” can mean that only selected processors have cold plates, that a rear-door exchanger is approved, or that an immersion tank is supported only for a specific chassis. A CPU/GPU cold plate does not automatically cool memory, voltage regulators, storage, network adapters or power supplies.

Request these values for every server model

  • Supported cooling configurations and the list of liquid-cooled components.
  • Approved coolant types, chemistry limits, filtration requirements and material compatibility.
  • Supply and return temperature ranges, maximum flow, allowable pressure drop and pressure limits.
  • Connection type, size, location, drip-free quick-disconnect requirements and manifold arrangement.
  • Maximum heat load under the intended workload, including any air-cooled portion that remains.
  • Operating limits for inlet air, facility ambient conditions, altitude and workload utilization.
  • Warranty, service and commissioning conditions for the proposed liquid configuration.

Ask the server vendor to identify what happens during a pump, CDU, leak-detection or facility-loop fault. A thermal design is incomplete if it describes normal operation but not safe throttling, shutdown and recovery.

Compare the three principal approaches

Approach Where heat is captured Hardware and facility implications Best fit to investigate Key questions
Direct-to-chip cold plates Selected high-power components inside the server Requires supported server cold plates, manifolds, tubing, quick disconnects and a TCS/CDU. Remaining components may still need air cooling. New or refresh deployments with server platforms designed for liquid loops Which components remain air-cooled? What flow, pressure drop, coolant and connection limits apply?
Immersion cooling Server equipment immersed in a dielectric cooling fluid Requires immersion tanks, compatible hardware, fluid handling, lifting and service procedures, plus facility heat exchange and containment. Deployments willing to adopt a different equipment and operating model Are the servers, seals, cables and service tools approved? How will fluid be filtered, stored, handled and replaced?
Rear-door heat exchanger Rack exhaust air passing through a liquid heat exchanger Captures rack-level heat without putting liquid inside each server, but requires compatible rack format, door integration, piping and heat rejection. Retrofits or mixed environments where rack-level heat capture is practical Does the rack and door support the exchanger? Can the facility accept the resulting liquid load and airflow arrangement?

Direct-to-chip cold plates

Cold plates attach to designated processors or other high-power devices. They are often the least disruptive liquid option when the server maker supplies an approved design, because the chassis and service model remain recognizable. The trade-off is partial coverage: fans and room air may still be required for components not connected to the liquid loop.

Evaluate the complete chain—cold plate, tubing, manifold, quick disconnect, rack distribution and CDU—rather than treating the plate as a standalone product. Pressure drop across every element affects pump sizing and the flow available to the last server in a row. Confirm how a technician replaces a board or disconnects a server without draining an entire rack.

Immersion cooling

Immersion places server equipment in a cooling fluid, making the tank, fluid and service process part of the IT platform. OCP’s immersion work includes thermal management, energy and water consumption, operational efficiency and sustainability. Those categories are evaluation criteria, not a universal promise of lower cost or higher efficiency.

Compatibility must be demonstrated for the exact hardware. Check circuit boards, connectors, drives, seals, optical components, labels and replacement parts. Define how equipment is lifted, drained or allowed to drip before service; how fluid is filtered and monitored; and how a spill or contaminated fluid is contained. The reviewed technical material does not establish a single fluid recipe or a universally superior efficiency or cost ranking.

Rear-door heat exchangers

A rear-door heat exchanger removes heat from the air leaving a rack through a liquid heat exchanger. It can be attractive when server internals cannot be modified or when an installation contains a mixture of liquid-ready and conventional systems. OCP’s door heat exchanger work focuses on Open Rack V3 integration, interfaces, infrastructure compatibility, fluid compatibility, operating parameters and heat extraction.

Confirm the rack width, door weight, hinge and clearance requirements, airflow direction, condensate management and allowable pressure drop. A rear-door unit captures rack exhaust heat; it does not make an undersized facility loop or chiller adequate. Validate the heat load and the remaining room-air requirements at the actual rack population.

Design the CDU and facility interface

The CDU is the control point between IT and the building. It normally contains a heat exchanger, pumps, expansion or fill provisions, sensors, controls, filtration and safety functions. Designs may place one CDU in a rack, install an in-row unit, or use a floor-standing CDU serving several racks.

In-rack versus external CDU

  • In-rack CDU: Shorter TCS piping and a clear rack failure domain, but less space for IT equipment and service work.
  • In-row CDU: Can serve adjacent racks while keeping equipment racks focused on compute, but requires coordinated row layout and piping.
  • Floor-standing or external CDU: May serve multiple racks and simplify access, but creates larger distribution zones and a broader failure domain unless isolation is provided.

Ask the designer to explain the placement using pressure drop, service access, redundancy, floor loading, routing and future expansion—not only nominal capacity. ASHRAE describes the CDU as a means to separate water-quality control domains and transfer heat between the FWS and TCS.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Condensation and water quality

Require a dew-point control strategy. The TCS supply temperature should remain above the room dew point by a documented margin under the specified ambient conditions, with sensors and alarms that trigger before condensation can form. Ask who owns calibration and what happens if a humidity sensor fails.

Obtain the chemistry and filtration plan for each loop. The facility side may use treated water that is unsuitable for direct contact with server cold plates, while the TCS may require a different chemistry. Verify metals, elastomers, coatings, inhibitors, biocides, filters and treatment intervals across the CDU, manifolds and server hardware. Do not accept “water-cooled” as a sufficient fluid specification.

A step-by-step selection process

  1. Freeze the IT bill of materials. List the exact server, accelerator, memory, storage and network models, their quantities per rack, expected utilization and planned growth.
  2. Collect approved thermal data. Obtain coolant, temperature, flow, pressure-drop, connection and component-coverage requirements from each equipment vendor.
  3. Map residual air cooling. Identify every component that remains air-cooled and calculate the room or in-rack airflow still required after liquid capture.
  4. Choose candidate architectures. Compare cold plates, immersion and rear-door heat exchangers against server compatibility and the desired service model; do not eliminate an option solely by rack density.
  5. Define the TCS. Specify coolant chemistry, supply and return temperatures, flow, filtration, expansion, controls, leak detection and isolation points.
  6. Audit the FWS and heat rejection. Verify available flow, pressure, temperature, water quality, pump capacity, heat exchanger or chiller capacity, controls and discharge or reuse conditions.
  7. Locate and size the CDU. Decide whether the unit is in-rack, in-row or external, document its service clearance and calculate pressure drop to the farthest rack.
  8. Engineer failure modes. Define pump, power, sensor, valve, CDU and facility-loop failures; specify throttling, isolation, alarm, safe shutdown and restart behavior.
  9. Validate the workload envelope. Require capacity calculations or test evidence at the intended utilization, inlet temperatures, ambient conditions and worst-case rack position.
  10. Review lifecycle and retrofit work. Price piping, controls, floor loading, drainage, commissioning, spare parts, maintenance contracts, water treatment, energy and downtime exposure.
  11. Run a witnessed acceptance test. Verify flow, temperature stability, alarms, leak response, isolation, restart and thermal performance before populating the full deployment.

Capacity is a workload-and-ambient number

A vendor’s peak number is meaningful only with its conditions. Active heat-exchange capacity changes with external ambient temperature and IT workload. Require a performance curve or operating envelope showing supply and return temperatures, flow, pressure drop, ambient conditions, workload, altitude assumptions and control limits.

OCP’s marketplace lists the OCP–Deschutes 5 In-Row CDU, supplied by Cooler Master, with “up to 2 MW” of thermal cooling capacity for AI/ML and high-power, high-density workloads. This is a current marketplace listing claim; the listing does not establish an independent comparative test, a publication year or the exact configuration and conditions behind the figure. Verify those details directly before using the number in a design.

Reliability, leak control and serviceability

Redundancy and isolation

Compare failure domains rather than counting pumps or CDUs. Ask whether a single CDU failure stops one rack, a row or an entire facility zone; whether pumps, controls and power feeds are redundant; and whether a failed unit can be isolated while neighboring racks continue operating.

A JD.COM design paper describes two CDUs, each capable of the maximum system cooling load and normally operated at 50%, with leak detection. That is an example of one project’s redundancy strategy, not a mandatory configuration. Your required level depends on availability objectives, workload restart behavior, maintenance windows and the consequences of thermal throttling.

Leak detection and response

  • Place sensors at CDU drip trays, manifolds, quick disconnects, rack bases and other credible leak points.
  • Define alarm thresholds, automatic valve actions, equipment throttling and controlled shutdown.
  • Provide physical containment, drainage or absorbent measures appropriate to the coolant and floor design.
  • Test detection with the control system, not just with a standalone sensor indicator.
  • Keep spare connectors, seals, hoses, filters and sensors, with documented replacement intervals.

Maintenance access

Technicians should be able to isolate a rack or branch, replace a filter or pump, and service a server without draining unrelated equipment. Document quick-disconnect procedures, residual pressure, fluid collection, refill, air removal, decontamination and post-maintenance verification. For immersion, add tank access, lifting equipment and fluid-handling procedures to the same maintenance plan.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Facility readiness and retrofit scope

Survey the building before selecting equipment. Confirm supply and return temperatures, available flow and pressure, heat-rejection headroom, pump and electrical capacity, pipe routes, valve locations, floor loading, ceiling or underfloor clearance, drainage, humidity control, fire protection and maintenance access.

Retrofitting liquid cooling can require new headers, CDU rooms or row space, controls integration, structural work and commissioning outages. Mixed racks may need separate airflow and liquid zones. Keep enough clearance to remove a server, open a rear door, replace a CDU component and inspect every connection.

OCP and ASHRAE announced an alliance on October 13, 2025 addressing facility readiness and the integration of liquid loops into existing data centers. Their published framing covers the FWS and TCS, direct-to-chip and immersion cooling, and intermediate systems such as in-row and in-rack CDUs.

“As the power and thermal management requirements of AI systems reshape data center IT equipment and the facilities that house it, the OCP Community’s innovative open data center specifications and ASHRAE’s cooling standards intersect in areas from the facilities—technology cooling system (TCS) and facility water system (FWS) coolant loops—to the IT equipment—direct-to-chip or immersion cooling—and various interconnecting technologies and intermediate systems like in-row or in-rack coolant distribution units (CDUs).”

Evaluate cost, energy, water and heat reuse consistently

There is no current, independently comparable total-cost dataset establishing a universal winner among cold plates, immersion and rear-door systems. Request bids with the same boundaries and assumptions:

Cost or impact category Include in the comparison
Installed equipment Servers or chassis modifications, cold plates or tanks, rear doors, CDUs, pumps, manifolds, sensors and controls
Facility work Headers, pipework, valves, heat exchangers, chillers or dry coolers, electrical work, floor reinforcement and drainage
Operating energy CDU pumps, facility pumps, fans that remain, heat-rejection equipment and control systems at the stated workload
Water and treatment Make-up water, filtration, chemistry monitoring, disposal and any water consumed by heat rejection
Service and availability Spare parts, contracts, technician training, planned outages, failure exposure and recovery time
Heat reuse Temperature of recovered heat, exchanger and pipe costs, nearby demand, seasonal use and economic assumptions

OCP treats heat reuse as a separate workstream covering technical reference designs, economics and policy. Treat reuse as a site-specific opportunity: it requires a nearby, steady heat sink and a credible financial case. Do not count it as an automatic benefit of any liquid technology.

Use a vendor evaluation matrix

Decision axis Evidence to require
Server fit Supported models, covered components, remaining air load and written warranty position
Thermal performance Guaranteed capacity at actual workload, ambient, inlet temperature, flow and pressure conditions
Facility integration FWS connection data, heat-rejection calculation, piping and controls drawings, retrofit scope

Reliability Redundancy diagram, failure domains, isolation valves, bypasses, power feeds and restart sequence
Leak and service operations Sensor locations, containment, alarm logic, quick-disconnect procedure and maintenance clearances
Operating cost Energy, water, treatment, service and replacement assumptions stated on the same workload basis
Heat reuse Recovered-temperature profile, potential user, exchanger design and economic assumptions

Common selection mistakes

Choosing by rack density alone

Density is a trigger to investigate liquid cooling, not a specification for a particular technology. Two racks with the same nameplate power can have different component coverage, inlet conditions, workload duty cycles and facility constraints. Start with the server thermal design and operating envelope.

Assuming every component is liquid-cooled

Cold plates commonly cover selected processors. Uncovered memory, storage, voltage regulators, network cards and power supplies can still determine airflow, fan power and room conditions. Require a component-level heat map.

Accepting a single peak-capacity number

“Up to” capacity without ambient, flow, temperature and workload conditions is not a sizing guarantee. Ask for the complete operating envelope and the least-favorable rack calculation.

Mixing incompatible fluids or materials

A facility treatment program is not automatically suitable for server cold plates. Verify chemistry, metals, elastomers, inhibitors, filtration and monitoring across both loops and every wetted component.

Leaving service procedures until commissioning

Plan isolation, draining, refill, air removal, leak testing, spare parts and technician access before purchase. If a technician cannot reach a connector or remove a server without shutting down a broad zone, the design has a serviceability problem.

Treating a case study as a universal requirement
