Choose laser safety eyewear only after confirming that its marked wavelength range covers every laser output and that its optical density (OD) meets the requirement for the anticipated exposure. Wavelength and power are essential inputs, but neither alone determines the right glasses: pulse characteristics, beam conditions, exposure duration and the applicable maximum permissible exposure (MPE) also matter. For workplace use or any uncertain assessment, involve the laser safety officer (LSO) and use the current standard applicable to your setting.

What the eyewear must match

There are two distinct requirements: the filter must protect at the laser wavelength or wavelengths, and its attenuation must be sufficient for the exposure hazard. A product description saying “high OD” does not establish that it protects against your laser; protection at one wavelength does not establish protection at another.

  • Wavelength coverage: Check the eyewear markings against every wavelength the system emits, including secondary or frequency-converted outputs. Use the laser manual or manufacturer specifications rather than inferring wavelength from the beam’s visible color.
  • Optical density: OD describes logarithmic attenuation. The required OD must be determined from the anticipated exposure and the applicable MPE, not selected from wavelength alone or from a generic product listing.

For U.S. workplaces, OSHA’s construction rule says: “Employees whose occupation or assignment requires exposure to laser beams shall be furnished suitable laser safety goggles which will protect for the specific wavelength of the laser and be of optical density (O.D.) adequate for the energy involved.” See 29 CFR 1926.102(c)(2)(i).

Gather the laser’s operating details

Collect the information needed for an exposure assessment before comparing eyewear. Obtain specifications from the laser manufacturer or manual; a single power figure may not adequately describe a pulsed or multi-wavelength system.

  • Beam size and other conditions needed to assess anticipated exposure and exposure duration.

Have the required OD determined

Determine the anticipated exposure and applicable MPE using the relevant current standard. OSHA’s technical manual describes the relationship as OD = log10(H0/MPE), where H0 is the anticipated worst-case exposure and both quantities must use matching units. This relationship explains how OD relates to exposure; it is not a shortcut around selecting correct inputs or applying the appropriate standard. Have an LSO or qualified laser safety professional make or review the assessment when required or when you are unsure.

OSHA’s construction regulation also contains a simplified table for continuous-wave maximum power density: 10-2 W/cm2 corresponds to OD 5; 10-1 W/cm2 to OD 6; 1 W/cm2 to OD 7; and 10 W/cm2 to OD 8. Under that table, values between rows require the higher OD. These figures belong to the regulation’s specific context; they are not an all-laser selection chart or a substitute for a complete hazard assessment. OSHA’s technical-manual example tables refer to ANSI Z136.1 (1993), so their example values should not be treated as universal current recommendations.

Check the eyewear markings against the assessment

Once the required protection is established, compare it with the markings on the eyewear. OSHA’s regulation calls for the intended wavelength, OD at those wavelengths and visible light transmission to be identified. Confirm that:

  • The marked wavelength range covers every relevant laser output.
  • The marked OD is adequate at each required wavelength.
  • The product is laser protective eyewear intended for the hazard, rather than ordinary sunglasses, tinted glasses or unrelated welding eyewear.

If either wavelength coverage or OD is unclear, do not assume the product is suitable. Ask the responsible safety professional or a qualified supplier to resolve the uncertainty before relying on the eyewear.

Compare fit and usability only among qualifying options

Comfort and visibility affect whether eyewear can be used effectively, but they cannot compensate for inadequate protection. After the wavelength and OD requirements are met, compare visible light transmission, coverage and side protection for the hazard, prescription compatibility, fit with other PPE, comfort, and suitability for the work environment. A specialist supplier’s guide also identifies visibility and frame fit as selection considerations: laservision USA’s laser eyewear guide.

Inspect the eyewear and use the right standards

Inspect eyewear periodically. OSHA guidance calls for checking filter material for damage and frames for mechanical integrity and light leaks. If the filter or frame is damaged, or its suitability is uncertain, take it out of service through the responsible safety process rather than relying on it.

OSHA identifies ANSI Z136.1 as “Safe Use of Lasers” and ANSI Z136.7 as “Testing and Labeling of Laser Protective Equipment”; the Z136 series consists of voluntary consensus standards approved by ANSI. OSHA’s standards information identifies the Laser Institute of America as the series’ committee secretariat and publisher. Requirements vary by setting: OSHA’s construction rule, 29 CFR 1926.102, applies in its U.S. workplace context. Consult the rule and current standard applicable to your work, with the LSO’s guidance.
