Choose laser-cutting software by identifying your machine’s controller and firmware first. That control system determines whether the software can communicate with the laser, which license tier you need, and whether the finished job can be saved in a format the machine understands. After compatibility, compare design and editing tools, artwork imports, text handling, job-planning controls, machine-ready output, and model-specific functions.
LightBurn’s own setup guidance puts the decision in the right order: ask, “What controller does your laser use?” A manufacturer application may still be necessary when third-party software cannot access features built into a particular machine. The xTool S1 is a clear example: LightBurn can control it, but xTool says some S1 functions require XCS.

1. Start with the controller, not the drawing tools
A laser can have an attractive enclosure, a familiar brand name, and a capable laser head, yet remain incompatible with software that cannot speak its controller’s command language. The controller translates a job into motion, power, speed, focus, and other machine instructions. Software that supports the design side but not that controller may let you draw and import artwork without producing a runnable job.
Recommended Free Tools
Find the exact controller and firmware in the machine manual, controller board documentation, setup utility, or manufacturer support page. Record the machine model and the firmware name exactly as shown. Do not rely only on the laser source, enclosure type, or the name of the manufacturer; two machines from the same manufacturer can use different control systems.

Controller categories used by LightBurn
| Controller category | Firmware or controller examples | Compatibility implication |
|---|---|---|
| GCode | GRBL, Smoothieware, Marlin, FluidNC, grblHAL, and xTool | LightBurn says any of its license types works with GCode machines. |
| DSP | Ruida, Trocen, and TopWisdom | LightBurn requires the Pro license for DSP machines. |
| Galvo | EZCAD2, EZCAD2 Lite, EZCAD3, and BSL | LightBurn requires the Pro license for Galvo machines. |
These categories are not interchangeable labels. A Ruida machine is not a GCode machine simply because it accepts files from a computer, and a Galvo marker has a different control workflow from a gantry laser. Use the controller category to narrow the software choices before comparing convenience features.
What to do when the controller is unclear
- Look for a controller name on the electronics cabinet, control panel, or machine documentation.
- Check the manufacturer’s setup instructions for the firmware or controller family.
- Write down the exact model and controller combination, including suffixes or revisions.
- Use that combination when checking the software vendor’s compatibility list and license selector.
- If documentation conflicts, ask the manufacturer which controller the machine exposes to computer-control software before buying a license.
A software compatibility statement for a broad family is not proof that every machine in that family works. Confirm the exact model whenever the vendor provides a model-specific note.
2. Match the license to the controller
Once the controller category is known, determine the license tier. For LightBurn, any license works with GCode machines, while DSP and Galvo machines require Pro. Buying a lower tier because the software’s drawing tools look sufficient can leave you unable to connect to the machine you own.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Your controller | LightBurn license requirement | Selection check |
|---|---|---|
| GCode | Any LightBurn license | Confirm that the machine’s firmware is one of the supported GCode systems. |
| DSP | Pro | Confirm the controller is Ruida, Trocen, TopWisdom, or another supported DSP controller. |
| Galvo | Pro | Confirm the machine uses a supported Galvo controller such as EZCAD2, EZCAD2 Lite, EZCAD3, or BSL. |
LightBurn’s product information describes the application as laser layout, editing, and control software and lists support for common vector and image formats plus most Ruida, Trocen, TopWisdom, and GCode controllers. “Most” is not the same as “all,” so use the compatibility documentation for the specific machine.
Account for update costs separately
LightBurn’s product page currently states that renewing a year of updates costs US$40. That is a current, changeable price rather than a permanent cost guarantee; verify the amount and renewal terms before purchase. Treat the initial license, any required Pro tier, and optional update renewal as separate decisions. A machine that works today can still require a software update later if its firmware or workflow changes.
3. Compare the complete workflow, not just drawing features
Laser software has to perform two different jobs. First, it prepares artwork. Second, it turns that artwork into instructions the controller can execute. A program with excellent vector editing but no usable machine output is a design tool, not a complete job-setup solution.
Design and editing
Check whether the software lets you create or edit the vector geometry your work requires. Also check whether it handles mixed artwork, because many jobs combine vectors for cuts or scores with raster content for engraving. LightBurn describes itself as providing layout, editing, and control rather than only a drawing canvas.

Artwork imports
LightBurn lists imports for AI, SVG, DXF, PDF, and PLT/HPGL files. Before choosing software, list the formats produced by your existing design tools and suppliers, then verify that the laser program can import them without an intermediate conversion.
| Format | Why to verify it | Practical check |
|---|---|---|
| AI | Common in vector-design workflows. | Open a representative file and inspect scale, paths, and text. |
| SVG | Widely used for web-based and vector artwork. | Confirm that strokes and fills arrive as intended. |
| DXF | Common in CAD and technical drawings. | Check units, layer geometry, and closed contours. |
| May contain vectors, raster images, or both. | Confirm which elements become editable paths. | |
| PLT/HPGL | Used by some plotting and cutting workflows. | Verify that imported paths retain their scale and order. |
Import support alone does not guarantee a clean result. Use one real project file, not a simple test square, when evaluating a program. A complex file exposes missing paths, unexpected fills, scaling changes, and unsupported elements before they reach the machine.
Text and fonts
Fonts are a frequent source of import errors. LightBurn states that imported text needs the required fonts installed on the computer or the text converted to paths. If a file uses a font that is not installed, the software may substitute another font or fail to render the lettering as designed.
- Install the exact font before importing artwork when the file must remain text.
- Convert text to vector paths in the design application when the recipient computer may not have the font.
- Keep an editable text version separately if you need to revise wording later.
- Inspect counters, thin strokes, and small characters after conversion; path conversion changes text into geometry that must still be suitable for the intended laser operation.
4. Verify machine-ready output
The final test is whether the software can save or send a job in the format required by the controller. LightBurn’s file-management guidance describes saving machine-ready files appropriate to the laser type, such as GCode or Ruida files.

- Can the software send the job directly to this controller, or must you transfer a controller-specific file?
- Which output format does the machine expect?
- Does the output preserve the intended geometry, ordering, scale, and operation settings?
- Can you reopen the saved job or inspect it before running the laser?
- Does the workflow require a separate manufacturer utility for any part of the process?
Do not judge output from a file name alone. A file that saves successfully can still be unusable if it targets the wrong controller family. Start with a small, low-risk test job and verify that the machine recognizes it before preparing valuable material.
5. Check model-specific functions before replacing manufacturer software
Controller compatibility does not mean feature parity. A third-party program may control the basic motion and power commands while lacking functions implemented by the manufacturer’s application.
The xTool S1 example
xTool says LightBurn can control the S1, but it does not support certain S1 functions, including marking the processing area and curved-material processing. xTool recommends XCS when you need the S1’s full feature set.

This limitation applies to the S1 information cited here; do not extend it automatically to every xTool model or to other manufacturers’ machines. Check the documentation for your exact model and firmware.
Feature checklist
- Marking or previewing the processing area before the job starts.
- Processing curved materials when the machine supports that capability.
- Any manufacturer-specific alignment, camera, rotary, autofocus, safety, or material workflow.
- Whether the function is available in third-party software, only in the manufacturer application, or requires switching between both.
If a feature matters to your work, treat it as a compatibility requirement rather than a bonus. A lower-cost or more familiar application is not a practical choice if it removes a function you use on every job.
6. A repeatable software-selection process
Use this sequence to compare candidates without being distracted by screenshots or feature-count lists.
- Inventory the machine. Record the exact model, controller category, firmware, connection method, and any manufacturer-specific functions you need.
- Classify the controller. Place it in the GCode, DSP, or Galvo category, or identify the equivalent category used by another software vendor.
- Filter by compatibility. Remove programs that do not explicitly support the controller and firmware combination.
- Calculate the license. For LightBurn, use any license for GCode and Pro for DSP or Galvo. Include the possibility of a US$40 annual update renewal as a changeable current price.
- Test your real artwork. Import an AI, SVG, DXF, PDF, or PLT/HPGL file that represents your normal work. Check scale, paths, images, and text.
- Resolve font handling. Install the fonts used by the artwork or convert text to paths, then verify the result.
- Confirm output. Save or send a small job in the controller’s required format, such as GCode or a Ruida file, and verify that the machine accepts it.
- Audit model features. Check processing-area marking, curved-material processing, and other functions that may be limited outside the manufacturer’s software.
- Run a controlled test. Use scrap material and a simple design before committing production stock. Confirm positioning, scale, and the expected operation.
7. Compare software with a decision matrix
When two programs appear compatible, score them against the same practical criteria. This prevents a polished interface from outweighing a missing output format or machine function.
| Decision axis | What to compare | Evidence to require |
|---|---|---|
| Controller and firmware | GCode, DSP, Galvo, and the exact firmware family. | An explicit compatibility statement for your model or controller. |
| License tier | Whether your controller requires a higher edition. | The vendor’s controller-to-license mapping. |
| Design and editing | Layout, vector editing, mixed raster/vector preparation, and job planning. | A test using a normal project rather than a sample shape. |
| Imports | AI, SVG, DXF, PDF, PLT/HPGL, and any formats in your workflow. | A representative file opened and inspected. |
| Text handling | Font availability and path conversion. | Correct rendering of the fonts used in production. |
| Machine output | Direct control or controller-specific file export. | A recognized test job in the expected format. |
| Model-specific features | Processing-area marking, curved-material processing, and manufacturer functions. | Documentation for the exact machine model. |
| Ongoing cost | Initial license, required edition, and update renewals. | Current pricing and renewal terms checked before purchase. |

Fix: Verify the controller category before purchase. LightBurn requires Pro for DSP and Galvo machines; GCode machines can use any LightBurn license.
Assuming an imported file is production-ready
Symptom: Text changes appearance, dimensions shift, or paths are missing after import.
Fix: Install the source fonts or convert text to paths. Inspect scale, geometry, and mixed-content files before output.
Assuming third-party control includes every machine feature
Symptom: Basic jobs run, but a manufacturer-specific preview or curved-material function is missing.
Fix: Compare the exact model’s feature list. For the xTool S1, xTool identifies processing-area marking and curved-material processing as functions not supported by LightBurn and recommends XCS for full S1 capabilities.
Skipping a low-risk test
Symptom: The first production job exposes a positioning, scale, or output problem.
Fix: Use scrap material and a small design to validate the complete path from import through controller-ready output.

9. Practical choices by machine type
GCode machines
Start with software that explicitly supports the machine’s GCode firmware. LightBurn’s guidance says any LightBurn license works with GCode machines, including systems identified with GRBL, Smoothieware, Marlin, FluidNC, grblHAL, or xTool firmware. Confirm the exact implementation and test the output format your machine expects.
DSP machines
For a Ruida, Trocen, or TopWisdom controller, verify DSP support and budget for LightBurn Pro if LightBurn is your choice. Pay particular attention to the machine-ready file format, such as a Ruida file, and to any functions handled by the machine manufacturer’s utility.
Galvo machines
Identify whether the marker uses EZCAD2, EZCAD2 Lite, EZCAD3, BSL, or another controller supported by the software. LightBurn’s guidance places Galvo machines in the Pro-license category. Confirm that the software’s job-planning and output workflow fits the marking hardware rather than assuming a gantry-laser workflow will transfer unchanged.
xTool S1 owners
Decide whether basic LightBurn control is enough or whether you need the S1 functions xTool says LightBurn lacks. Choose XCS when processing-area marking, curved-material processing, or other full-feature workflows are essential. Do not generalize this S1 decision to other xTool models without checking their documentation.
10. The short buying rule
Buy only after you can answer five questions: What controller and firmware does the machine use? Which license tier supports it? Can the software import the files and fonts used in your designs? Can it produce the machine’s required output? Does it support the model-specific functions you actually need?
If any answer is unclear, postpone the purchase and resolve that single compatibility question first. A program with fewer headline features but verified controller support and reliable output is a better choice than a sophisticated editor that cannot deliver a runnable job.
