Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor Bedrock streaming through Lambda, tune three separate parts of the path: Lambda’s execution timeout, its memory allocation, and how Lambda sends the response to the client. Measure the complete function duration under realistic requests and leave headroom; use observed memory and duration to choose an allocation; and enable RESPONSE_STREAM when clients need chunks before completion or responses may exceed Lambda’s 6 MB buffered limit. Separately, choose a Bedrock streaming API the model supports and decide whether guardrail checks should delay chunks before delivery.
How the three settings fit together
A streaming request has two distinct streaming legs: Bedrock emits model events to the Lambda function, and Lambda may stream the function’s response onward to the client. Enabling one does not automatically enable the other. Your design also has multiple limits and deadlines: the model’s processing limit, Lambda’s timeout, and the client or gateway deadline.
Choose the Bedrock API and verify model support, then configure the Lambda invocation path and client-facing response mode. Finally, tune timeout and memory with representative workload measurements. This avoids treating Lambda’s maximum timeout or memory setting as a recommended starting point.
How to choose Lambda timeout
A standard Lambda function’s timeout defaults to 3 seconds and can be configured from 1 to 900 seconds in one-second increments, according to AWS’s timeout documentation. The 900-second ceiling is a hard limit, not a sensible default for a Bedrock request.

Estimate the full time Lambda needs to initialize, call Bedrock, consume and transform events, and deliver the response. Compare measured durations against both the Lambda timeout and the client or gateway deadline, and leave margin for variability. Test with realistic upper-bound inputs and output lengths: data transfer, downstream service latency, and computational complexity can make a function run longer than its average. AWS warns that setting timeout close to average duration increases the risk of unexpected timeouts.
Bedrock may independently emit a model timeout event if processing exceeds the model’s timeout length. Handle that event separately from a Lambda timeout or invocation failure; record enough information to distinguish where the request stopped and provide appropriate behavior to the client. See the InvokeModelWithResponseStream API reference.

How to tune Lambda memory
Lambda memory is configurable from 128 MB to 10,240 MB in 1 MB increments. CPU allocation rises in proportion to memory; at 1,769 MB, a function receives the equivalent of one vCPU. AWS describes memory as the principal performance control and recommends 128 MB only for simple functions. See Configure Lambda function memory.
Compare candidate allocations using representative requests, monitoring both peak memory consumption and function duration. Include the parsing, serialization, libraries, and networking work your handler actually performs. If the function mostly waits for Bedrock, allocating more memory may not materially shorten model processing time. If CPU work or network handling constrains the handler, additional allocation may help; that is an inference from Lambda’s documented CPU and performance relationship, not a benchmark result for your function.

Choose how Lambda returns the response
A Lambda function URL defaults to BUFFERED: the response becomes available when the invocation completes, with a 6 MB maximum buffered response. With RESPONSE_STREAM, response chunks can reach the client as the function produces them, and the maximum streamed response is 200 MB. Lambda documents uncapped bandwidth for the first 6 MB of a streamed response and a 2 MB/s cap for the remainder. These are service limits, not performance guarantees. See the FunctionUrlConfig reference, Lambda quotas, and response streaming documentation.
| Mode | When the client receives data | Response limit and transfer detail |
|---|---|---|
BUFFERED |
After the function has completed its response | Maximum 6 MB |
RESPONSE_STREAM |
In chunks as the function produces them | Maximum 200 MB; first 6 MB uncapped, remainder capped at 2 MB/s |
Streaming is useful when early chunks reduce perceived wait or the response might exceed the buffered limit. It can also avoid holding the entire response in memory. It is not available through every Region and invocation path: AWS documents support for function URLs and the InvokeWithResponseStream API, and describes API Gateway proxy integration using that API. Check availability for your Region and route before relying on it.

For functions in a VPC, function URLs do not support response streaming. AWS documents invoking through the SDK’s streaming API with the required Lambda interface VPC endpoint as the alternative. Also account for disconnects: a broken client connection does not stop a streaming invocation, and billing continues for the function’s full duration. If abandoned work should stop, implement that behavior in application logic rather than assuming the connection will cancel execution.

InvokeModelWithResponseStream
Use this API for model-specific inference requests and streaming output. Its request body and inference parameters are model-specific. Verify support with Bedrock’s GetFoundationModel operation and the model’s responseStreamingSupported field. AWS CLI does not support Bedrock streaming operations, so use a compatible SDK or API client that supports event streams. The API reference and Bedrock inference API guide describe the operation and capability check.

ConverseStream
Choose ConverseStream when a message-based interface is a better fit. It provides a consistent API across Bedrock models that support messages, while still allowing model-specific inference fields. It requires the bedrock:InvokeModelWithResponseStream permission. Consult the ConverseStream API reference, and do not assume all models expose identical parameters or support the same interface.
Choose guardrail behavior for the content risk
Bedrock streaming guardrails offer synchronous and asynchronous processing. In synchronous mode, Bedrock buffers one or more chunks for policy checks before sending them. This adds latency but checks chunks before delivery. In asynchronous mode, chunks are sent as they become available while checks continue in the background; inappropriate material may therefore appear before a finding blocks later chunks. AWS states that asynchronous mode does not support sensitive-information masking.
Use synchronous processing when content must be screened before it reaches the client or masking is required. Consider asynchronous processing only when lower chunk latency is worth the documented exposure trade-off. See Configure streaming response behavior to filter content.
Quick Recap
Validate the complete request path
- Confirm the selected model supports streaming and the chosen Bedrock API.
- Measure full Lambda duration and memory consumption with representative prompts, outputs, and handler work; leave timeout margin beyond typical duration.
- Check that the client or gateway deadline allows the response to finish and that Lambda’s timeout does not exceed the useful lifetime of the request.
- Choose buffered or streamed Lambda responses based on first-byte needs, expected response size, route support, and Region availability.
- For VPC deployments, verify the documented SDK and interface VPC endpoint path before choosing response streaming.
- Log and handle Bedrock model stream errors separately from Lambda invocation failures, and decide what application logic should do if a client disconnects.
- Select synchronous or asynchronous guardrails based on whether pre-delivery screening or lower chunk latency matters more.
