Choose iPhone Pro storage by how much you keep on the phone between offloads, not by how many photos you expect to take. For the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, Apple lists 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB options in the U.S. A 256GB model can suit a modest library of standard photos and HEVC video if you offload regularly or use iCloud Photos optimization; regular ProRes recording or keeping a large video library locally points toward more capacity.
How much iPhone Pro storage do you need?
There is no dependable universal count of photos or recording minutes for a given capacity. File sizes vary with format and settings, and the phone also needs space for apps, downloads and other data. Start with your current storage use and your retention habits, then choose enough room for the whole device.

Apple’s current U.S. specifications list these capacities for both iPhone 18 Pro models. Availability and prices can vary by market and change over time, so check the Apple store for your region before buying.
| Capacity | Who it may suit |
|---|---|
| 256GB | A modest local library, mostly standard photos and HEVC video, and a routine of offloading media or using optimized cloud storage. |
| 512GB | A growing photo and video library, more frequent high-resolution capture, or a preference to offload less often. |
| 1TB | Regular video capture, especially when you use large formats or keep project footage on the phone between edits and transfers. |
| 2TB | A clear need to capture and retain very large amounts of media on-device, or a workflow where external offloading is inconvenient. |
These are practical decision bands, not Apple guarantees about photo counts or recording time. Choosing 2TB just because you take many photos is not automatically necessary; the stronger reasons are retaining large files locally or having a sustained high-volume video workflow. Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro technical specifications list the current capacities and supported formats.

- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- When you receive the phone, insert a SIM card from a compatible carrier. Then, turn it on, connect to Wi-Fi, and follow the on screen prompts to activate service.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charger and charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
How to check your starting point
Use your current phone as a baseline. Photos and videos are only part of the storage total, so note what apps, downloads and other categories already occupy before choosing a new capacity.
- On your iPhone, open Settings > General > [device] Storage and note how much space is used and which categories take the most.
- Check remaining iCloud storage separately; available cloud space does not count as built-in iPhone capacity.
- Decide how long you usually keep new photos and videos on the phone before transferring or deleting them.
Apple explains how to check local storage in its iPhone storage guidance. The amount you use today is a starting point, not a complete forecast: your next phone may hold a larger library, and your recording habits may change.
Why recording format matters more than the Pro label
Ordinary HEVC video and ProRes footage have very different storage implications. Apple says, “ProRes files are up to 30 times larger than HEVC files.” That is a relative comparison, not a fixed file-size-per-minute rule: resolution, frame rate, ProRes mode and scene all affect the result. Do not use it to infer a guaranteed number of recording hours per 100GB.

Apple lists HEVC, H.264, ProRes and ProRes RAW among the iPhone 18 Pro’s recorded formats. If you mainly shoot standard photos and HEVC video and move older clips elsewhere, you have a different storage profile from someone who regularly records and retains ProRes projects. Apple also says ProRes recording on the phone requires at least 10% of device storage to be free, so filling the device almost completely can prevent recording.
ProRes mode availability also depends on the model, capacity and whether an external drive is used. Apple’s current specifications say iPhone 18 Pro can record ProRes up to 4K120 with external recording. Check the Apple ProRes support guidance and the exact model’s current specifications for the mode you intend to use. ProRes is not supported in Cinematic, Time-lapse or Slo-Mo mode, according to Apple’s iPhone user guide.
When an external SSD can reduce internal-storage pressure
For supported models and recording modes, Apple allows ProRes video to be recorded directly to USB-C external storage. This can suit a creator who is comfortable keeping a drive connected during capture and organizing footage afterward. It is not a general substitute for internal storage: it adds equipment and file-management steps, and does not help when you want a self-contained phone.

- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
- The drive must be formatted as exFAT; Apple says encrypted drives are not supported.
- Apple specifies sustained drive write speeds of at least 220 MB/s for 4K60 ProRes or 440 MB/s for 4K120 ProRes.
- Use a USB 3 cable rated for at least 10 Gbit/s.
- Check that the specific iPhone model supports the recording mode and external-drive setup you plan to use.
Apple’s ProRes recording instructions detail supported devices and requirements. The support article covers iPhone 15 Pro, 16 Pro and 17 Pro models; newer models and specific modes should be checked against their current specifications rather than assumed to work identically.
What iCloud Photos optimization changes
With iCloud Photos and Optimize iPhone Storage enabled, full-resolution photos and videos are kept in iCloud while space-saving copies are kept on the iPhone as needed. This can reduce how much of a large library is stored locally, provided you have enough iCloud capacity. It does not increase the phone’s built-in storage, and it makes access to full-resolution originals depend on iCloud availability when those originals are not on the device.
Apple says new iCloud signups receive 5GB free and can upgrade to iCloud+. Storage-plan sizes, prices and regional availability can change, so check Apple’s current local offer. If you do not want an ongoing cloud plan or cloud-dependent access to originals, a computer or external-drive offload routine is another way to manage a library.
A practical decision checklist
- Local use: How much space is already used, and how much belongs to photos and video rather than apps or downloads?
- Capture format: Is most video HEVC or H.264, or is ProRes a regular part of your work?
- Retention: Do you offload soon after editing or sharing, or keep clips on the phone for months?
- Cloud: Will you use Optimize iPhone Storage, and is there enough iCloud storage for your library?
- External workflow: Will you record to a compatible USB-C drive and manage footage outside the phone?
- Price and region: Once you know the capacity your workflow calls for, compare the current local price difference between tiers.
As a final pre-purchase check, verify the model, capacity and recording-mode support against Apple’s current regional listing. The most useful upgrade is the one that gives your actual workflow enough local headroom without paying for storage you will not use.
