Choose headphones around the longest, noisiest, or most demanding part of your routine—not a feature list. For travel, prioritize noise cancellation that suits the environment, portability, and battery life in the mode you will use. For work, judge microphone quality separately from noise cancellation and verify device switching. For everyday listening, put fit, long-session comfort, and your sound preference first.

Start with the job the headphones need to do

A pair can work across travel, calls, and music, but the best compromise depends on what matters most in your routine. Write down where you will use them, how long you wear them at a stretch, whether you take calls, and which devices you switch between. Then compare candidates against those needs instead of treating any single specification as a universal winner.

  • Frequent travel: Consider the noise you encounter—such as steady plane or train rumble—along with portability, battery life with ANC enabled, and whether you need a wired option.
  • Work calls: Look for independent microphone tests or call samples, and check that multipoint supports your phone and computer.
  • Everyday listening: Prioritize the fit you can tolerate for your longest expected session and a sound profile you enjoy with familiar music.

ANC, or active noise cancellation, changes how much surrounding sound you hear. It does not establish what callers hear from your microphone, and it does not eliminate every sound. Sony’s headphone buying guidance, HP’s business headset guide, and Soundcore’s work-and-music guidance all address different parts of this choice; Soundcore’s advice is manufacturer guidance, not independent testing.

For travel, match isolation and battery to the journey

Think about the sounds you need to manage

Steady low-frequency rumble, office HVAC, nearby voices, and sudden sounds are different conditions. ANC may help with some environmental noise, while a good physical seal provides passive isolation. Ambient or transparency modes can let outside sound back in when you need awareness. Consider which conditions matter on your routes rather than assuming ANC makes a headphone silent.

  • App for EQ Customization: Download the soundcore app to tailor your sound using the customizable EQ, with 22 presets, or adjust it yourself. You can also switch between 3 modes: ANC, Normal, and Transparency, and relax with white noise.

Compare runtime in the mode you will use

Battery claims are model- and mode-specific. If you expect to use ANC throughout a flight or commute, compare ANC-on runtime rather than a figure measured with cancellation off. Check charging behavior and whether listening by cable still needs battery power. A cable is not necessarily a battery-free backup.

Balance portability with wearability

Over-ear headphones can provide an enclosed fit, but may take more room in a bag and feel warm. On-ear headphones and earbuds are often easier to carry, but their fit and isolation differ. Form factor alone cannot guarantee comfort or effective isolation for a particular person.

For work calls, evaluate the microphone on its own

Listen to call samples in realistic conditions

Strong ANC describes the listener-side experience; microphone speech clarity and background-noise handling determine what reaches other people on a call. Look for microphone samples or independent mic tests, ideally in conditions like your workplace. Do not infer call quality from a headphone’s ANC rating or from a general claim about clear calls.

Soundcore by Anker Q20i Hybrid Active Noise Cancelling Headphones, White | Over-Ear, Bluetooth, 40H ANC Playtime, Hi-Res Audio, Big Bass, Transparency Mode, Customize via App, Travel, Home, Office
  • Block the World, Keep the Music: Four built-in mics work together to filter out background noise — whether you're in a packed office, on a crowded commute, or moving through a busy street — so every beat comes through clean and clear. (Not available in AUX-in mode.)
  • Two Ways to Hear More: BassUp technology delivers deep, punchy bass and crisp highs in wireless mode — then step it up further by plugging in the included AUX cable to unlock Hi‑Res certified audio for studio-level clarity.
  • 40 Hours. 5-Minute Top-Up: With ANC on, a single charge keeps you listening through days of commutes and long-haul flights. Running low? Just 5 minutes plugged in gives you 4 more hours — so you're never stuck waiting.
  • Two Devices, Zero Hassle: Stay connected to your laptop and phone at the same time. Audio switches automatically to whichever device needs you — so a call never interrupts your flow, and getting back to your playlist is just as easy. Designed for commuters and remote workers who move smoothly between work and personal listening throughout the day.
  • Your Sound, Your Rules: The soundcore app puts everything at your fingertips — dials your ideal EQ with presets or build your own, flip between ANC, Normal, and Transparency modes on the fly, or wind down with built-in white noise. One app, total control.

Decide whether a music headphone is enough

A travel-oriented ANC headphone may be a reasonable hybrid for occasional calls and everyday listening, but a call-heavy role can favor a dedicated UC headset with a boom microphone. The trade-off is often between an all-purpose listening design and a device built around voice communication. Choose based on how often calls matter and the mic evidence available for the exact model.

Verify multipoint with your actual devices

Multipoint can connect a headphone to more than one device, but support and switching behavior vary by model. Confirm that the exact headphone supports simultaneous connections and works with the phone-and-laptop combination you use. A Bluetooth version number by itself does not establish this.

For everyday listening, test comfort and sound preference

Wear them for a realistic session

Comfort depends on pressure, earcup space, heat, weight, and how the headphone sits on your head. If possible, try it for a period close to your longest normal listening session. Wear glasses during the fit check if you use them. Over-ear, on-ear, and in-ear designs each trade enclosure, breathability, and portability differently; none is comfortable for everyone.

Use familiar music to assess sound

Listen to music you know well and consider whether the tonal balance suits your preferences. Manufacturer descriptions of a sound profile are not independent rankings, and a published feature list cannot tell you which tuning you will enjoy.

Use a checklist when comparing models

  • Environment: Which sounds are you trying to reduce, and do you need ANC, passive isolation, or an ambient mode?
  • Fit: Does the design stay comfortable over your longest typical session, including with glasses if relevant?
  • Calls: Are there useful microphone samples or independent tests for the conditions where you work?
  • Connectivity: Does the exact model support multipoint with your intended devices? Check cable or USB support and source compatibility if those matter.
  • Battery and upkeep: What is the runtime in your intended ANC mode? Can the battery or other parts be replaced?
  • Sound and budget: Does the sound suit you, and is the current price and availability acceptable in your market?

Price and availability depend on market and date, so verify them where you plan to buy. When two candidates look close on paper, prioritize the one with stronger evidence for your hardest use case and a fit you can actually wear.

Example: how to read a feature list without overclaiming

The Sennheiser MOMENTUM 5 Wireless illustrates a feature set spanning several use cases; it is not evidence that the model is the best or most comfortable choice. In product information dated 18 September 2026, Sennheiser lists adaptive ANC, Bluetooth 5.4, multipoint for two devices, USB-C and 2.5 mm-to-3.5 mm wired options, and a user-replaceable battery. The company lists up to 57 hours of playback with ANC enabled; that is a manufacturer specification, not an independent test result, and should not be compared directly with another model unless test settings and methods match. Sennheiser also says the model is not intended for water or excessive sweat. See Sennheiser’s product information and its support guidance.

  • LOSSLESS AUDIO SUPPORT: USB-C lossless audio and sound profiles optimize music quality across devices and environments. Additional option to use the 3.5 mm cable for a standard analog experience.

Sennheiser says: “The MOMENTUM 5 Wireless can be used wired with the included USB-C to C or the 2.5 mm to 3.5 mm AUX cable.” The company’s support guidance also says the headphones must be powered on for analog connection, so the cable is not a passive, battery-free fallback.

Keep listening levels and breaks in the plan

The World Health Organization’s safe-listening page gives examples of exposure limits of up to 40 hours per week at 80 dB and four hours per week at 90 dB. The page’s publication year is not shown, and these examples are not a guarantee of safety for every person or circumstance. WHO advises keeping volume below 60% of maximum, monitoring sound levels, using well-fitted noise-cancelling headphones, and taking breaks. Read the WHO safe-listening guidance.
