The best stopgap game is not automatically the shortest, newest, or highest-rated one. Filter your options in this order: hardware and access, budget, available session time, mood, social preference, and willingness to commit. Then reduce the list to three games and choose the one whose actual moment-to-moment play looks appealing.
If the delayed release has no reliable new date, favor games with natural stopping points or repeatable short sessions. If you want closure before the new launch, choose a contained game with a clear ending. Start with games you already own or can access through a service you already pay for; buy something new only when it fills a specific gap.

Start with hard limits, not genre
A game cannot be a good recommendation if it does not run on your current hardware, is unavailable in your region, or exceeds what you are willing to spend. Treat those as filters rather than preferences. Mood and genre matter only after the practical limits are satisfied.
Confirm the platform
Write down the exact device you will use: for example, a particular console generation, handheld, gaming PC, or cloud-enabled device. Check the current store listing for that platform, not a generic title page. Different editions can have different save compatibility, performance, downloadable content, or release dates.
#1 Best Overall
Check access you already have
Look through your installed games, digital library, physical shelf, wishlist, and any subscription catalog you already use. This prevents a temporary waiting game from turning into an unnecessary purchase. A catalog listing can change by region and date, so verify that the game is still included before you rely on it.
Set a spending ceiling
Decide whether the answer must cost nothing, fit a fixed amount, or may include a full-price purchase. A free game you dislike is not better value than an inexpensive game that matches your available time. If you recommend a purchase, identify the exact edition and platform and treat current price and availability as details to recheck.
Describe the wait you are trying to fill
“The release is delayed” does not describe how you will play in the meantime. The useful question is whether you need a bridge for a few evenings, an open-ended hobby, or a complete experience before launch.

When the new date could move again, choose missions, levels, or runs that end cleanly. You should be able to stop after 15 to 45 minutes without losing the thread or feeling that you have abandoned a major objective.
Several weeks or months
A longer wait can support a campaign, but check its structure rather than its advertised total hours. A 40-hour game with frequent chapter breaks may fit better than a 10-hour game that expects long uninterrupted sessions.
Unknown delay
Favor flexibility. Repeatable runs, bite-sized missions, puzzle boards, and games with explicit save points let you play when you have energy without creating a second obligation. Avoid starting a huge role-playing game solely because the delay feels empty; it may still be unfinished when the delayed title arrives.

Match the game to tonight’s mood
Genre labels are too broad to predict whether a game will feel right after work or school. Name the experience you want in one sentence before browsing.
- Relaxing: low-pressure exploration, decoration, gentle puzzles, or forgiving progression.
- Challenging: demanding combat, precision platforming, strategic decisions, or high-stakes failure.
- Story-rich: a focused narrative with chapters you can complete in one sitting.
- Creative: building, arranging, experimenting, or solving problems in several valid ways.
- Social: a game that suits the people who are actually available, whether that means local co-op, online co-op, or competition.
- Funny and light: short scenarios, expressive characters, or playful systems that do not require emotional investment.
Write the mood down. It is easier to reject a technically suitable game when it does not fit your energy than to rationalize buying it because its genre sounds correct.
Separate total length from session flexibility
Completion time answers “How long might the whole game take?” It does not answer “Can I stop comfortably after half an hour?” Use both measures when choosing.
| Structure | What it offers | Best fit for a delay | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Short, complete game | A contained beginning, middle, and ending | A player who wants closure before the delayed launch | Completion estimates vary with exploration, difficulty, and accessibility settings |
| Mission-based game | Discrete objectives that can often be finished independently | Uncertain schedules and short bursts | Some missions include long preparation, cutscenes, or mandatory upgrades |
| Repeatable runs | Short attempts that build knowledge, skill, or unlocks | A long wait with no fixed commitment | Failure loops may feel tiring when you want relaxation |
| Chapter-based campaign | Longer narrative divided into recognizable sections | A player who wants story and can play regularly | Save points and chapter lengths may still be uneven |
| Open-ended sandbox | Self-directed goals and potentially unlimited play | A player seeking a hobby rather than a placeholder | It may absorb the entire waiting period and never provide a clear ending |
Ask two separate questions for every candidate: “How long is the main path?” and “What is a normal stopping point?” A short game can have awkward sessions, while a longer game can be remarkably easy to pause.
Use a three-game shortlist
Comparing an entire backlog creates decision fatigue. Pick three finalists, each representing a different solution to the wait. For example, choose one contained game, one repeatable or mission-based game, and one social or long-form option. If two finalists serve exactly the same role, replace one.

A practical 20-minute process
- Apply hard limits. Remove anything that does not run on your device, is not accessible to you, or exceeds your budget.
- Define the session. Decide whether you usually have 20 minutes, an hour, or several uninterrupted hours. Include how often you expect to play.
- Name the mood. Choose one primary feeling, such as calm, curious, tense, amused, or competitive.
- Choose the social mode. Mark solo, local co-op, online co-op, or competitive play. Do not select a multiplayer game if the people you want to play with are unavailable.
- Pick three candidates. Give each a different reason to exist on the list.
- Watch unedited gameplay. Use a short, ordinary section rather than a cinematic trailer. Check movement, menus, combat or puzzle rhythm, camera behavior, and how often the game pauses for dialogue.
- Make the first session the test. Play long enough to reach the game’s normal loop, then decide whether you want another session. Do not continue solely because you have already downloaded it.

| A Short Hike | Peaceful exploration built around hiking, climbing, and discovering a mountain landscape | A contained, low-pressure experience for someone who wants exploration without a large commitment | Nintendo included it in a February 28, 2022 roundup of games it said could be completed in eight hours or less. That is the roundup’s selection criterion, not a guarantee of every player’s time. |
| Unpacking | Block-fitting puzzles and home decoration tell a story through eight house moves | Quiet, structured sessions with a clear sense of progress; suitable when you want creativity without combat | It appeared in the same Nintendo short-game roundup; confirm the current edition for your hardware. |
| Donut County | Comic puzzle play in which a raccoon controls a growing remote-controlled hole | Light, playful scenarios for a player who wants humor and short problem-solving stretches | It also appeared in Nintendo’s eight-hours-or-less roundup; actual completion varies by player. |
| Blue Prince | Short runs through a changing manor, with puzzles solved and clues gathered between deeper mysteries | Each run can stand alone, while the larger investigation rewards returning over a longer wait | PlayStation described it as a PS5 PlayStation Plus Game Catalog title on the cited January 2026 guide. Membership and catalog access can change by region and over time. |
| Earth Defense Force 5 | Mission-based action with more than 100 missions | PlayStation says individual missions can be enjoyed in a few minutes, making it a candidate for short bursts | The cited listing covers PS5 and PS4. Check the current catalog entry and the edition available to you. |
| While Waiting | A puzzle game in which doing nothing and waiting is part of the strategy | A thematic curiosity for someone who wants the subject of waiting to be the mechanic | Nintendo lists it for Switch with a February 5, 2025 release. It is an adjacent example, not a general answer for every long delay. |
Optillusion founder Dong Zhou described the idea behind While Waiting this way: “We want to create a game from every mundane moment, to help players find their own ways to kill time.” The quote explains the game’s theme; it does not make the title a universal recommendation.
Verify access before you commit
Catalogs and storefronts change. Before starting a game you expect to carry you through a delay, check four details on the current platform listing:
- The supported hardware and operating-system version.
- Whether your subscription tier currently includes the game, rather than merely offering a trial or discount.
- Which edition is listed, including generation-specific versions and downloadable content.
- Whether your saved progress transfers if you might switch devices.
For a physical copy, confirm regional compatibility and whether the disc or cartridge contains the full game or requires a large download. For a digital purchase, check refund rules before starting if the store limits refunds after playtime.
Do not overinterpret release-delay statistics
Delays are common enough that planning a flexible substitute is sensible, but no statistic can forecast a particular game’s next date. An empirical study of 23,485 Steam games reported that 48% of the studied games had a delayed initial release. Among delayed games, the median delay was 14 days. Across genres in that dataset, the share of delayed titles ranged from 48% to 52%.
Those figures describe the study’s Steam sample and its definition of an initial-release delay. They do not predict a named forthcoming game, a second delay, a platform-specific date, or the length of your own wait. Use an announced date as a planning input, not as a reason to choose a game you would otherwise dislike.
Use gameplay footage as a final check
Trailers emphasize spectacle and may conceal the ordinary loop. When you are uncertain, watch or sample five to ten minutes of unedited play. Look for the actions you will repeat most often:

- How quickly you reach meaningful control after loading.
- Whether movement, aiming, menus, or camera controls feel comfortable.
- How frequently the game interrupts play with dialogue or tutorials.
- Whether an unsuccessful run still teaches or rewards something.
- How clearly the game signals a save point or a finished mission.
If the routine looks tedious in footage, a higher review score will not fix that mismatch. Conversely, a modest-looking game may be ideal if its repeated actions match the mood you identified.
Common mistakes and their fixes
Choosing by genre alone
“I want an action game” leaves out difficulty, pacing, social mode, and emotional tone. Replace the genre with a fuller sentence, such as “I want solo action with short missions and low story overhead.”
Starting an enormous game to punish the wait
A delayed release does not create an obligation to finish a 100-hour campaign. Choose a long game only when you genuinely want its systems and can accept leaving it unfinished.
Confusing a short campaign with short sessions
Check the length of a normal chapter, mission, or run. A game advertised as short may still open with an hour-long introduction.
Ignoring the people required for multiplayer
Ask who will be online, on which platform, and at what times. If your schedule is uncertain, a solo game or a title with reliable matchmaking may fit better than a co-op game that depends on one friend.

Trusting an old catalog listing
Subscription availability is temporary and regional. Reopen the current listing immediately before downloading or recommending a game to someone else.
A simple scoring sheet for a final choice
When two or three games still look equal, score each from zero to two on the factors below. A zero means it fails your requirement; a two means it fits very well.
| Factor | Question |
|---|---|
| Access | Can I play it now on my hardware through ownership or current catalog access? |
| Session fit | Can I stop at the amount of time I normally have? |
| Mood | Does the moment-to-moment loop produce the feeling I want? |
| Commitment | Is the total scale appropriate for an uncertain wait? |
| Social fit | Does its solo, co-op, or competitive mode match my actual plans? |
| Cost | Does it stay within my spending limit without requiring an unwanted subscription? |
Give access and budget veto power: a game that scores zero on either should not win because it excels elsewhere. Among the remaining options, let mood and session fit break the tie. The goal is not to identify the objectively best game; it is to identify the one you are most likely to start and enjoy tonight.

The question “How do I decide what game to play next from my backlog?” is usually a filtering problem, not a shortage of choices. Hide anything that fails your platform, access, budget, or session limits. From what remains, select three games with different structures and stop researching. A shortlist is large enough to preserve choice and small enough to produce a decision.
After your first session, record one sentence: what you enjoyed, what irritated you, and whether you wanted to continue. That note improves the next choice without turning leisure into a tracking project.
The Bottom Line
Choose the game that fits your hardware, access, available session, mood, and social plans—not the game with the biggest reputation. For an uncertain delay, a flexible mission- or run-based game is usually safer; for closure, choose a contained short game. Verify the current edition and catalog listing, test ordinary gameplay, and keep the final shortlist to three.
