Choose a fund by checking its mandate, diversification, full costs, liquidity, currency exposure and dealing terms—not because it is available through a GIFT City account. Then separately confirm that you are eligible to invest, understand the account and funding route, and assess tax and reporting obligations in every relevant jurisdiction. GIFT IFSC is an access route, not a recommendation or a guarantee of a particular tax outcome.
What a GIFT City account does—and does not—tell you
GIFT IFSC can provide a route to investment products such as ETFs and funds. IFSCA’s NRI investor guidance describes a general sequence involving an IFSC bank account, onboarding with an IFSCA-licensed broker, and choosing from available products. That outline is not a promise that every investor, broker, or fund is eligible for every other one. Confirm the current requirements with the regulated institution and read the specific product documents.

Keep two questions separate: can you use the account route, and is a particular fund suitable for you? A “GIFT City” label answers neither question on its own.

Check the account and broker requirements
Ask the bank and broker what investor categories they accept, what documents and account arrangements they require, which funding and remittance routes they support, and whether they provide access to the specific product you are considering. Verify current minimums, charges and dealing arrangements directly; they are not established across products by the general regulatory guidance.

Do not generalise the FPI participation route
IFSCA’s circular of May 2, 2024 discusses ways NRI, OCI and resident individuals may participate in IFSC-based FPIs investing in Indian securities. It describes an alternative route allowing these investors to contribute up to 100% of an IFSC-based FPI corpus, subject to conditions that include independent investment decisions by the fund manager and pooled investor rights. This is a conditional route for specified structures—not a blanket permission for any Indian resident to buy any GIFT IFSC fund. Check subsequent implementation, the particular route and product, and your own eligibility before relying on it.
Identify what the fund actually invests in
Read the mandate and benchmark
Establish whether the fund tracks or invests in Indian, IFSC or foreign assets, and whether that exposure fits your objective. An ETF can have an equity-index, debt-index, commodity, hybrid or actively managed strategy. The IFSCA Fund Management Regulations text amended through July 30, 2025 provides for ETFs listed and traded on a recognised exchange; it also describes equity-index ETFs that may replicate an index of IFSC, India or a foreign jurisdiction. The regulator’s index indicates later amendments, so check the current consolidated rules and the fund’s current offer document rather than treating that dated copy as definitive current law.

Look through the label to diversification
Review the actual holdings, sectors, countries and issuer concentrations. “ETF” and “mutual fund” describe structures, not how diversified a portfolio is. Two products with similar names may have materially different mandates or concentrations.

Compare the practical features that affect your result
Calculate costs beyond the fund’s headline expense
Check the fund’s disclosed recurring expenses alongside any platform, custody, brokerage, foreign-exchange, transfer or transaction charges. The sources available here do not establish comparable current fee amounts or minimum investments for named products. Request the relevant schedules and calculate costs for your expected holding and transactions; do not assume that two funds are comparable because their stated fund expenses look similar.
Check how you can buy and sell
For an ETF, verify its exchange listing, trading volume, bid–ask spread, market hours and whether your broker accepts the order types you need. For a fund scheme, check dealing frequency, cut-off rules, settlement, redemption terms, and any lock-up or exit charge in its documents. These arrangements affect how and when you can transact; a listing or product label alone does not establish easy or inexpensive trading.

Understand currency exposure
Identify both the currency in which you subscribe or redeem and the currencies of the underlying assets. Currency conversion can change your result even when the fund’s quoted unit price rises. Ask the provider which conversion applies to each transaction and include its charges in your comparison.

Do not treat GIFT IFSC access as synonymous with tax-free investing. IFSCA’s NRI guidance gives general information about potential advantages but also advises investors to consult a tax adviser about their personal situation, particularly where they live in a country that taxes global income. Your outcome can depend on the fund, the transaction and your tax residence; you may also have reporting duties outside India. Get advice that covers the relevant jurisdictions rather than relying on a general description of the IFSC regime.
Best Value
IFSCA’s January–March 2025 bulletin says the Finance Act 2025 allowed tax-neutral relocation to retail funds or ETFs in IFSC under sections 47(viiac) and 47(viiad). That statement concerns qualifying relocation under specified provisions. It does not establish that every purchase, redemption, distribution or gain from an IFSC fund is tax-free for an individual.

- Set your objective. Decide what exposure you want and what role it should play in your portfolio.
- Confirm access. Ask the IFSC bank and IFSCA-licensed broker whether your investor category and jurisdiction can use the route and access the specific product.
- Read current product documents. Check the mandate, benchmark, holdings, risk information, charges, subscription and redemption currency, and dealing terms.
- Compare like with like. Assess diversification, all-in costs, liquidity and currency exposure across the eligible products you are actually considering.
- Check funding and tax separately. Confirm remittance and transaction arrangements with the provider, and obtain jurisdiction-specific tax and reporting advice.
- Verify before investing. Recheck the current offer document, provider disclosures and applicable rules; eligibility and product terms can be specific to the route and fund.
What can be concluded about fund choice
IFSCA’s regulatory material supports several ETF structures, but it does not establish a current shortlist of named funds with comparable fees, minimums, dealing terms and liquidity. Without those product-level facts, there is no evidence-based basis here to rank a GIFT IFSC ETF against a mutual-fund-style scheme or recommend a particular fund. Make the comparison from current documents for products you are eligible to buy.
