Choose the GPU system that completes your actual AI job at the required quality, throughput or latency, using the least measured energy. A low board-wattage card is not automatically efficient: the useful comparison is completed training work or accepted inference requests divided by energy, measured on a complete system and at an equivalent operating point.
Start with your model, precision, batch or concurrency, quality target and service-level requirement. Then compare reproducible results for the same workload, verify memory and interconnect fit, check the software stack, and validate the leading configuration at the wall. This method works whether you are buying an accelerator, a workstation or server, or cloud capacity.

Define efficiency as useful AI work per joule
For procurement, energy efficiency is not simply watts, thermal design power or peak tera-operations per second. Use a ratio tied to the result you need:
Training efficiency = completed training runs, samples or tokens at the required quality ÷ measured energy (kWh).

Inference efficiency = accepted requests, images or tokens at the required quality and service level ÷ measured energy (kWh).
For a fixed job, you can also compare energy to completion: average system power multiplied by elapsed time. A system that draws more power but finishes much sooner can use less total energy; a system that appears efficient at idle may lose that advantage when CPU, memory, networking and cooling are included.
Keep the quality target in the equation. Changing precision, accuracy, model size, sequence length or latency target changes the work being measured. An earlier MLCommons benchmark finding reported that raising inference accuracy from 99% to 99.9% could sacrifice up to 50% energy efficiency in that benchmark. That is a historical, benchmark-specific result, not a universal penalty for every model or platform.

The right accelerator depends on the job you will run, not on a product’s headline specification. Write a short workload specification that another person could reproduce.
Training jobs
- Name the model or a representative model family, dataset size and target quality or loss.
- Record precision (such as FP32, FP16, BF16 or an integer format), sequence or image dimensions, batch size and expected utilization.
- Set a completion criterion: for example, a target validation score or a fixed number of tokens processed.
- State whether training is single-GPU or distributed, the number of accelerators, and the maximum acceptable time to completion.
Distributed training can make a job finish sooner while increasing total energy. Communication, synchronization and underutilized accelerators can make scaling non-linear, so do not multiply a single-card result by the number of cards.
Inference services
- Identify the model, quantization or precision, context and output lengths, and preprocessing and postprocessing steps.
- Specify requests per second, tokens per second, batch policy and concurrency.
- Set latency limits, including time to first token (TTFT) for interactive generation and tail latency such as P95.
- Define the quality or accuracy threshold that a response must meet.
Throughput and responsiveness are different operating points. A larger batch may improve requests per second while making an interactive response slower. Compare candidates at the operating point your users will actually experience.
Interactive, batch and edge scenarios
Interactive assistants usually prioritize TTFT and tail latency; offline transcription, rendering or data processing may prioritize total throughput and energy to completion. An edge deployment may be constrained by a small power budget, while a datacenter can trade facility capacity for higher throughput. Write those constraints down before selecting hardware.

MLPerf Endpoints is designed around the buyer’s question, “What will this system do for my workload?” Its visualization connects throughput, interactivity, TTFT P95 and concurrency. The preferred point is therefore a decision, not a single universal score.

Measure the complete system, not only the accelerator
A board specification describes one component. A deployed system also includes host CPUs, memory, storage, networking, fans or pumps, voltage regulation, power supplies and cooling. Those parts consume energy and can limit accelerator utilization.
For procurement and operating-cost decisions, prefer average AC power measured at the wall for the duration of the specified benchmark. MLCommons Power describes this approach and the physical analyzers used for system measurements. A board-level telemetry value can still help diagnose a bottleneck, but it is not a whole-system efficiency result.
Keep the boundary consistent. If one candidate includes a host and cooling system while another reports accelerator-only power, the ratios are not comparable. If your facility has material cooling or power-distribution overhead, add it to the comparison when reliable measurements are available.
Use benchmark evidence without overclaiming
Inference results
MLPerf Inference: Datacenter associates a submission with a named submitter, software, system configuration, benchmark, accelerator count and power measurements. It is intended for architecture-neutral, representative and reproducible comparison. Use a row only when its model, scenario, quality target, precision and system configuration resemble yours.
The broader MLPerf Inference material explains the benchmark family and its scenarios. Published power is valid for the accompanying benchmark run; it is not a general measurement of how that accelerator behaves in every application.
Training results
MLPerf Training runs full-system tests across machine-learning applications, software and hardware. Compare only results with relevant models and success criteria. A training result for a different workload, optimizer or quality threshold may have little predictive value for your run.

Power data and release-level claims
MLCommons reported 1,841 MLPerf Power benchmark submissions to date in its March 4, 2025 announcement. That count is the total stated at that publication date, not a current total. The announcement also quotes Power working-group co-chair Arun Tejusve (Tejus) Raghunath Rajan: “We cannot improve what we do not measure.” The statement supports a measurement discipline, not a recommendation for a particular product.
On September 16, 2026, MLCommons announced MLPerf Inference v6.1 results with 30 participating organizations and two new tests for emerging inference patterns. It reported up to a 5.7× performance gain compared with one year earlier across the published results. That is an aggregate release-level performance statement, not a claim that every GPU is 5.7 times more energy-efficient.
The follow-up MLCommons analysis of Inference v6.1 can help explain where the industry is investing, but it does not replace a workload-matched measurement.

Check memory, interconnect and software fit
Efficiency is irrelevant if the model does not fit or the runtime cannot keep the accelerator busy. Confirm these items for every candidate configuration:
- Memory capacity: account for model weights, activations, optimizer state, KV cache and framework overhead. Leave headroom for the actual batch or concurrency; a nominal capacity number is not a workload guarantee.
- Memory bandwidth: bandwidth-sensitive models can be limited even when compute capacity appears ample.
- Interconnect: multi-GPU training and model parallel inference depend on link topology and communication efficiency. Verify scaling with the intended number of accelerators instead of extrapolating from one card.
- Precision and kernels: confirm support for the precision, sparse operations, attention kernels, quantization and model format you will use.
- Framework and drivers: record framework version, runtime, compiler, drivers and libraries behind the benchmark. A software mismatch can erase a hardware advantage.
- Storage and input pipeline: slow data loading can leave an expensive accelerator idle, increasing energy per completed result.
The benchmark sources provide comparisons across workload, software, hardware, quality, performance and system power. They do not establish universal VRAM, bandwidth, electrical or thermal thresholds. Match those requirements to your model and verify current official specifications for the exact system.
Compare ownership, a complete system and cloud capacity
| Option | Energy evidence to request | Important constraints | When it fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Individual accelerator | Whole-system benchmark using the card, or a repeatable test in your host | Host power, cooling, slot clearance, power connectors, memory and interconnect | Known workstation or server platform and steady utilization |
| Complete workstation or server | Wall power, workload throughput or latency, and energy to result for the delivered configuration | Chassis airflow, PSU capacity, acoustics, serviceability and expansion | Multi-GPU or sustained workloads where system integration matters |
| Cloud, neocloud or managed service | Provider-measured workload throughput, latency and metered usage; validate with a trial | Instance availability, data transfer, tenancy, region, software image and billing model | Burst capacity, uncertain demand or pre-purchase validation |
A cloud instance can be more practical than ownership when utilization is intermittent or the required electrical and cooling infrastructure is unavailable. Conversely, a heavily used workload may justify an owned system after you include acquisition, support, electricity and refresh costs. Do not infer cloud energy efficiency from a provider’s instance name; request comparable workload evidence or measure your own run.
Follow a repeatable selection process
- Write acceptance criteria. State model, quality, precision, batch or concurrency, throughput or latency target, maximum completion time and power or noise limit.
- Build a shortlist of complete configurations. Include accelerator count, host CPU, memory, storage, networking, PSU and cooling, not just a card name.
- Filter for fit. Eliminate systems that cannot hold the model and runtime, meet electrical capacity, provide the required interconnect or support the needed drivers and kernels.
- Collect matched benchmark rows. For each result, record benchmark version, model, scenario, quality target, software stack, system configuration, accelerator count, average AC power and elapsed time.
- Normalize the result. Calculate kWh to completion for training or energy per accepted request for inference. Keep throughput, TTFT P95, concurrency and tail latency beside the energy figure.
- Test finalists on representative data. Reproduce the quality target and operating point, including preprocessing, storage, networking and realistic utilization.
- Apply deployment constraints. Check circuit capacity, sustained cooling, chassis and slot clearance, noise, service and support, acquisition cost and operating cost.
- Choose the lowest-risk option. Select the configuration that meets the service and quality requirements with the lowest measured energy and acceptable total cost, rather than the one with the lowest advertised watts.
Validate power and performance at the wall
Use a power meter or analyzer rated for your voltage, current, connector type and continuous load. Place it at the system’s AC input so the reading includes the PSU and the rest of the machine. Follow the instrument’s safety instructions and do not exceed circuit or connector ratings.

- Record the idle baseline after the system reaches its normal operating state.
- Warm up the model and runtime so compilation, caching and frequency transitions do not distort the run.
- Run a fixed workload long enough to capture steady behavior, including data loading and communication.
- Log average and peak AC power, elapsed time, completed work, quality result, throughput, latency and concurrency.
- Repeat under the same software, ambient conditions and power mode, then report the variation rather than only the best run.
For inference, test the concurrency and latency target separately; a high-load run can hide unacceptable interactive latency. For training, report energy to the same checkpoint or quality criterion. If you change precision, batch size, clocks, cooling mode or software, treat it as a new result.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Account for total cost and facility limits
Energy cost is only one part of the decision. A simple operating estimate is measured kWh per useful result multiplied by your electricity price. Add demand charges or facility overhead where they apply. Then combine that figure with acquisition, support, hosting, networking, storage, maintenance and refresh costs.
Electrical capacity and heat removal are hard limits. A system that fits a budget but exceeds the available circuit, rack power or cooling capacity is not an efficient deployment. Check sustained rather than short boost power, PSU headroom, airflow, pump or fan behavior, and ambient-temperature limits. Noise can also determine whether a workstation is usable near people.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Choosing the lowest-wattage card
Problem: the card draws less power but takes much longer, so total energy is higher.
Correction: measure energy to the same completed result and include host and cooling power.
Comparing unlike benchmark rows
Problem: one result uses a different model, precision, batch, quality target or latency scenario.
Correction: compare equivalent operating points and retain all qualifications with the number.
Using accelerator telemetry as system efficiency
Problem: CPU, memory, storage, networking and fans are omitted.

A practical decision rule
Buy or rent the configuration that passes four gates: it fits the model and software; it meets quality and throughput or latency targets; it stays within electrical, thermal, acoustic and physical limits; and its measured energy per useful result is competitive after system and operating costs. If no published result matches your job, treat the data as a hypothesis and run a representative trial before committing.
