Start with the style you want
Decide whether you want tight curls, loose waves, a smoother finish, more volume, defined natural curls, or stretched curls. Then factor in length, strand thickness, and texture. Dyson’s hair-type guide, published December 6, 2023, offers different starting recommendations for short/fine, short/coarse, long/fine, long/coarse, and curly/coily hair. These are manufacturer suggestions, not a promise that a tool will create the same result for every person.

Choose by hair length, texture, and desired result

What barrel size and brush type change
Barrels: curl size and hair length
Dyson associates smaller barrel diameters with tighter curls and larger ones with looser curls or waves. Long-barrel versions are intended for longer hair. Diameter is only one part of the result: hair preparation, technique, texture, and how well your hair holds a curl also matter.

Smoothing brushes: soft versus firm bristles
Dyson recommends soft smoothing brushes for fine hair and firm smoothing brushes for coarse or frizz-prone hair. These are useful starting points rather than strict rules; select based on the finish you want and how the brush feels on your hair.
Round brushes: body and volume
A round volumizing brush is the option to consider when your priority is added body and shape. Dyson offers size variations, including a larger round brush for longer hair.

For curly or coily hair, choose between definition and stretch
If you want to retain and shape your natural curl pattern, Dyson’s curly-hair guidance points to a diffuser. If you want a stretched or smoother style, its recommendations include a wide-tooth comb and brush or barrel options for different finishes. The right choice depends on whether preserving curl definition or changing the shape is your goal.

Check compatibility before buying
Dyson states that its re-engineered attachments are compatible with every Dyson Airwrap multi-styler and says they can be purchased individually. That statement applies to the re-engineered attachments covered by its attachment-upgrade support page; do not assume it covers every accessory or model-specific set. Check the product listing and compatibility details for both your machine and the exact attachment. Availability can also vary by region.
Prepare your hair for better results
Use barrels on damp hair
Dyson says barrels work best on damp hair. Its product FAQ also explains the intended use of the Coanda smoothing dryer and its modes; consult the Airwrap FAQ for those product details.

Allow for differences in curl retention
Dyson’s curl-retention guidance says straight, heavy, or fine hair may need additional preparation, and that temperature and airflow should suit your hair type. A barrel size alone cannot guarantee how long a curl will last. Dyson published this guidance in March 2026; it is manufacturer advice, not an independent comparative test.
