What “double outline markers” can mean
The phrase covers two different designs. Self-outlining markers lay down ink that separates into a contrasting outline and center as you write or draw. Dual-ended markers put separate colors or tip styles at opposite ends; they do not create a two-color outline in one stroke.

Self-outlining ink
Crayola says its Signature Metallic Outline Paint Markers “display 2 colors with one stroke.” According to the product description, the ink naturally separates on paper to make a colorful outlining detail. This is a manufacturer description, not a comparative performance test. The set is listed as six markers, item 586701. See Crayola’s product details.

Crayola Double Doodlers have a broad-line dark-color end and a chisel-tip light-color end. They offer two colors and tip styles in one marker, but each color is applied separately, so they are not equivalent to self-outlining ink. See Crayola’s Double Doodlers description.

Which features matter for your project?
For a two-color stroke
Choose a product explicitly described as separating into two colors in one stroke. Crayola describes its Signature Metallic Outline Paint Markers this way and lists them for writing projects, journaling, hand lettering, and art projects. The manufacturer says they work on light and dark surfaces, but notes that the outline effect varies on dark surfaces.
For a metallic center and colored border
Shuttle Art describes its Double Line Outline Markers as producing a metallic texture surrounded by a colored border. Its surfaced 28-color product page showed sold-out status when retrieved; availability can change, so check the page before planning a purchase. See Shuttle Art’s product page.

For separate colors or tip styles
If you want a broad line at one end and a finer or differently shaped tip at the other, dual-ended markers may suit the task. They are useful for switching colors or line styles, but do not provide the same self-outlining effect.
Choose paper and protect the work surface
Crayola recommends heavy-weight paper for its Signature Metallic Outline Paint Markers and warns that they may bleed through some paper. The product page does not give a numeric paper-weight recommendation or guarantee bleed resistance. Test the marker on a scrap of the paper you intend to use, and place a protective sheet beneath the work. On dark surfaces, check the effect in advance because the outline may vary.

Prepare and use paint markers
- Keep the cap on and shake the marker, following Crayola’s preparation instructions.
- On scrap paper, pump the tip until ink flows.
- Make a test stroke on the intended surface before starting the finished piece.
- Recap the marker immediately after use.
- Store it horizontally or tip up. If it needs re-priming after storage, repeat the preparation steps.
What the available product information can—and cannot—tell you
The manufacturer descriptions establish the stated ink effects, intended uses, and handling guidance for the named products. They do not establish which marker is most durable, offers the best value, or produces the most consistent line across different papers. There is no basis here for a tested “best” ranking; select by the effect you want and verify it on your materials.
