If you do not know the recipient’s exact shoe size, the lowest-risk gift is a footwear retailer gift card, ideally presented with an offer to shop together. The recipient can choose the size, width, shape and style that actually feel comfortable. If you want to give a physical pair, first learn the person’s usual brand, model, size, width and intended use, then buy from a retailer with a workable exchange policy. A printed size alone is not a reliable comfort guarantee.
Why shoe size is not enough to predict comfort
Shoe labels are only a starting point. Harvard Health Publishing notes that sizes vary among manufacturers, while Kaiser Permanente explains that sizing can change between brands and styles. A person who wears one number in a walking shoe may need another in a dress shoe, boot or athletic model. Even within one brand, the shape of the toe box, the upper and the sole can change how the same labeled size feels.

Width is just as important as length. If a shoe presses across the forefoot, buying a longer size can leave excess space in front without relieving the pressure at the sides. Foot shape, instep height, heel shape and toe shape all interact with the shoe’s construction. That is why a recipient’s known brand and model are more useful than a number remembered in isolation.
Comfort also has to be judged in the actual pair. The useful test is whether both shoes feel acceptable while the wearer is standing and walking, with the socks or inserts they normally use. A pair that pinches, rubs or creates a pressure point should not be kept on the assumption that a painful break-in period will solve the problem. The Skechers fitting guide puts the principle plainly: a promising pair should feel comfortable before leaving the store, not after a hopeful break-in period.

Choose the gift format that matches your certainty
Use this decision table before spending money. It separates the risk created by unknown sizing from the recipient’s control over the final choice.
| Gift format | Size uncertainty | Recipient control | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Footwear retailer gift card | Lowest; the recipient selects the size and fit | High | Retailer availability, gift-card restrictions, expiration or redemption rules, and whether the recipient likes that retailer |
| Shopping together | Lowest after the recipient tries the exact pair | Highest | Store location, stock, fitting availability and time to try both shoes while standing and walking |
| Physical pair based on reliable brand and size information | Moderate; a familiar label still does not guarantee fit | Lower unless exchange is easy | Width, shape, intended use, closure, return window, fees and the condition required for an exchange |
If the recipient would prefer a surprise object rather than a card, wrap the gift card with a note offering to go shopping together. That keeps the presentation personal without forcing a guess about a measurement you do not have.
The safest choice: a footwear gift card
A gift card transfers the final sizing decision to the person who will wear the shoes. It also lets them compare widths, toe shapes, cushioning and closures in person or through the retailer’s normal fitting process. One footwear seller lists $50, $75 and $100 shoe-gift-card denominations, showing that this is an established gift format; denominations and terms differ by retailer.

A current Dansko FAQ, for example, lists gift cards among items that cannot be returned or exchanged. That is a retailer-specific condition, not an industry standard. Verify whether the card can be used online, in stores or both; whether it expires; whether it can be combined with other payment methods; and what happens if the recipient returns a purchase made with it.
Choose a retailer the recipient already uses when possible. If you are unsure, ask a low-key question such as, “Which shoe stores have worked well for you lately?” You can also notice the brand and model they wear without asking for a measurement directly. The aim is to identify a place where they can find suitable widths and styles, not merely the nearest store.
How to gather useful information discreetly
If you want to buy an actual pair, collect more than a single size number. Ask questions in a way that sounds like planning a useful gift rather than inspecting someone’s feet.

Find a known reference pair
- Ask which brand and model of everyday shoe fit best right now.
- Record the labeled size exactly, including half sizes and any width letter or word.
- Confirm whether that size is for the left and right feet as worn; feet can differ, so the remembered label is not a substitute for trying both shoes.
- If possible, look at the inside label of a pair the recipient already praises instead of relying on memory.
Ask about the shoe’s job
Purpose changes the fitting priorities. A pair for daily walking may need a different structure from one for office wear, travel or another activity. Ask where the recipient expects to wear the gift, how much walking or standing is involved, and whether they prefer a flexible or more supportive feel. A shoe selected for the wrong activity can feel unsuitable even when the length is correct.

Ask about width and shape preferences
- Does the person usually need a narrow, standard or wide fit?
- Do pointed toes create pressure, or do they prefer a round or square toe with more depth?
- Do they need extra room over the instep or across the forefoot?
- Do they use orthoses or a particular insole?
These questions are more revealing than asking, “What size are you?” A person may not know a width designation but may know that certain shoes feel tight across the toes or that only adjustable closures stay secure.
Check closure and cushioning preferences
Laces and hook-and-loop closures allow the wearer to adjust how firmly the shoe is held on the foot. Some people prefer that adjustability; others want a slip-on design. Ask whether the recipient likes a firm, cushioned or minimal underfoot feel and whether a removable insole is useful. These features can improve the chance of a good match, but none guarantees comfort without trying the exact pair.
How to buy a physical pair with the least risk
- Start with the known brand and model. Use a pair the recipient already finds comfortable as your reference, and do not assume the same label will fit every style from that brand.
- Record length and width. Include the complete label, such as a half size or width designation, and note whether the reference shoe is a specific men’s, women’s or unisex version.
- Match the intended activity. Select a construction appropriate for the recipient’s normal use rather than choosing by appearance alone.
- Check the retailer’s policy before paying. Read the time limit, exclusions, return shipping or restocking charges, and whether shoes must be unworn or undamaged. Save the receipt and packaging.
- Keep the pair returnable. Ask the recipient to test the shoes indoors on a clean surface first. Do not remove labels or discard the box until the fit is accepted.
- Arrange a prompt fitting. Try the shoes with the socks and inserts the recipient expects to use. The longer the pair sits unused, the greater the chance that a return deadline will pass.
The policy details must be checked with the specific seller. Dansko’s stated terms provide one example: eligible unworn, undamaged online merchandise may be returned or exchanged within 60 days; a $5.95 return fee applies from April 1, 2026, and exchanges are free for full-priced footwear. Those terms should not be generalized to another retailer, product category or purchase channel.
Use this try-on checklist
Try both shoes while standing
Feet are not always identical, so the recipient should put on both shoes. Standing places the foot under normal load and can reveal pressure that is not apparent while seated. Compare the more crowded foot and use it as the limiting fit; a pair that works only for the smaller foot is not a successful fit.

Check toe room without chasing a universal number
There should be enough space for the toes to move without being forced against the front. The Skechers guide describes approximately 3/8 to 1/2 inch of space as a useful starting point, but it presents that measurement as guidance, not a guarantee. Toe shape, shoe shape and the activity all matter. Harvard Health’s advice is to trust the wearer’s comfort rather than the printed size or a product description.

Check width and the widest part of the foot
The upper should not squeeze the forefoot or create a prominent pressure point. Ask the wearer to notice the sides of the foot, the little-toe area and the ball of the foot. If the width is wrong, moving to a longer size may produce too much empty length while leaving the side pressure unchanged. Look for a different width or shape instead.
Check heel hold
The heel should remain secure during ordinary steps without painful rubbing or an oppressive grip. Walk at a normal pace, turn, and take a few longer steps. A heel that slips excessively can make the shoe feel unstable; a heel counter that digs in can create a pressure point that will not be solved by simply wearing the shoes more.
Walk on a clean indoor surface
Have the recipient walk, stop and change direction while the shoes are still returnable. Notice pinching, rubbing, numbness, hot spots, sliding and any sensation that makes the person alter their stride. The test should include the socks or inserts used in daily life. The fit of a bare foot or a thin store sock may not represent the fit of the finished gift.
Judge the shoe for its intended use
A shoe can feel comfortable for a short indoor walk yet be a poor choice for long standing, travel or another demanding activity. Consider cushioning, stability, flexibility and closure in the context in which the recipient will actually wear it. Comfort is not an abstract rating; it is a relationship between the foot, the shoe and the task.
Features that can make fitting more adaptable
The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust’s footwear guide identifies several construction features worth considering:
- Round or square toes with adequate depth: these shapes can provide more usable room than a pointed front, depending on the person’s toes and the shoe’s internal shape.
- Adjustable fastening: laces or hook-and-loop closures let the wearer modify the hold as needed.
- Removable insoles: these may create room for an orthosis or a preferred insert when the shoe is designed to accommodate one.
- Soft uppers: a less rigid upper may reduce rubbing at sensitive areas, but softness does not correct an incorrect length or width.
- Cushioned soles: cushioning can suit some activities and preferences, but the amount and feel are personal.
These are selection criteria, not promises. A shoe with every feature on the list can still be wrong for a particular foot, so the recipient’s try-on remains decisive.

When a medical or fitting concern changes the plan
Do not treat a gift guide as a substitute for personal medical advice. If the recipient has significant foot pain, numbness or a known medical fitting concern, ask how they normally select footwear and follow the advice of a qualified healthcare professional. The Skechers fitting guidance likewise directs people with those concerns toward professional help.
If the recipient uses orthoses, ask whether they need a removable insole, extra depth or a particular closure. Bring the actual orthoses to the fitting rather than checking the shoe with the factory insole alone. A shoe that fits without the device may become too tight once it is inserted.
Common mistakes that turn a thoughtful gift into an uncomfortable one
Guessing from height, gender or an old memory
Body size and a remembered number do not establish the current length or width of either foot. Use a current reference pair or let the recipient choose.
Buying one size larger to create room
Extra length does not automatically create forefoot width. It can leave the heel and toe relationship wrong while the original pressure point remains.
Assuming the same number fits every style
Brand and style variation is the reason a known model is valuable. Treat the label as evidence about that particular shoe, not a universal measurement.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesRemoving the possibility of exchange
Wearing the shoes outdoors, discarding the packaging or missing the return deadline can eliminate the practical safety net. Keep the pair in returnable condition until the recipient approves the fit.
Best Value
Insisting on a painful break-in
Discomfort, rubbing, numbness or pressure is information about the fit. The recipient should not have to tolerate pain to justify the gift.
Choosing appearance over use
A visually attractive shoe that does not match the recipient’s walking, work or travel needs may spend more time in a closet than on their feet. Ask about the activity before choosing the style.
Practical gift scenarios
You know nothing about size or brand
Give a retailer gift card and a note offering to shop together. This is the cleanest solution because the recipient controls length, width, shape and style.
You know the recipient’s favorite model
Confirm the exact model, size and width from the existing pair, then buy from a seller with a clear exchange process. Have the recipient try both shoes indoors with their normal socks and inserts before using them outside.
You know the size but not the width
Do not treat the size as sufficient. Ask whether the person usually buys wide or narrow footwear, or choose a gift card instead. Width and shape can determine comfort even when length is familiar.
The recipient has orthoses or recurring foot discomfort
Make the gift an appointment to shop together, or give a gift card and let the recipient consult their healthcare professional. Bring any orthoses to the fitting and prioritize the recipient’s established guidance.
You want the surprise of a wrapped box
Wrap a gift card, a handwritten note and, if appropriate, a promise to spend time selecting the pair. The surprise is preserved without turning an unknown measurement into a forced purchase.

Final pre-purchase checklist
- Do you know the recipient’s current preferred brand and model, not merely an old size?
- Do you know the width or the fit problem they are trying to avoid?
- Is the shoe intended for daily walking, work, travel or another clearly identified activity?
- Does the design offer the closure, toe shape, depth or removable insole the recipient may need?
- Have you read the retailer’s current return and exchange rules, including fees and exclusions?
- Can the recipient try both shoes with their normal socks and inserts before the pair is worn outside?
- Would a gift card or shopping trip give the recipient better control than your guess?
When reliable information is missing, giving control is the considerate choice. A footwear gift card or a shopping trip avoids an avoidable size gamble; a physical pair becomes sensible only when it is based on a current reference and protected by a realistic exchange plan.
