Size the loan so your health factor has room for adverse price moves and interest accrual: Aave considers a position eligible for liquidation when its health factor falls below 1.
Reserve settings can differ for the same asset across Aave deployments and can change through governance. The figures you see when you are ready to transact—not a historical article or a remembered parameter—must control your decision.

What collateral does in an Aave loan
Collateral is the asset deposited to secure borrowed assets. Aave values that deposit, applies reserve-specific risk parameters, and lets you borrow against only part of the value. If the account becomes under-collateralized, liquidators can repay debt and receive collateral with a reserve-specific liquidation bonus. Aave describes health factor as a metric indicating “the stability of a borrow position.” Read the protocol explanation at Aave’s Health Factor & Liquidations guide.

A volatile or thinly traded asset may lose value quickly or be difficult to sell during a liquidation. A correlated collateral/debt pair can reduce some relative-price risk, but correlation can break down. A protocol parameter that looks attractive can still leave little room for a market shock.

Start with the reserve’s four core parameters
Every candidate must be evaluated in the reserve where you will supply it. Aave’s reserve documentation explains that these settings are configured per reserve and may vary by market.
| Parameter | What it controls | How to use it when choosing collateral |
|---|---|---|
| Collateral eligibility | Whether the supplied asset can support borrowing at all. | An asset with 0% LTV cannot be enabled as collateral. Treat eligibility as a prerequisite, not a quality score. |
| Loan-to-value (LTV) | The maximum borrowing value allowed against the asset under the reserve’s rules. | A higher LTV permits more debt but leaves less price headroom. It is a borrowing ceiling, not a recommended utilization target. |
| Liquidation threshold | The collateral-value point used in determining when an account can become liquidatable. | It is distinct from LTV. Do not treat the threshold as the amount you should borrow. |
| Liquidation bonus | The incentive paid to liquidators in the form of collateral received for repaying debt. | A larger bonus can make liquidation more costly if your position crosses the threshold. The value is reserve-specific. |
For exact definitions and current values, inspect the reserve configuration in your selected chain and market and consult the official reserve reference. Do not copy an LTV, threshold, bonus, cap or liquidity figure from another network or an earlier date.
Use health factor as your account-level warning
Aave defines health factor as:
Health Factor = (Total Collateral Value × Weighted Average Liquidation Threshold) ÷ Total Borrow Value
The weighted threshold reflects the mix of collateral in the account. A health factor below 1 makes the position eligible for liquidation. Both sides of the equation move: collateral prices can fall, borrowed amounts can rise through interest accrual, and debt-asset prices can change relative to the account’s reporting currency. Aave explains these dynamics in its liquidation documentation.
Aave’s numerical illustration
Aave gives an illustrative calculation using $10,000 of ETH collateral, an 80% liquidation threshold and $6,000 of GHO debt:
($10,000 × 0.80) ÷ $6,000 = 1.333
This is a mathematical example from Aave’s help material, not a current recommendation for ETH, GHO or any particular market. Your own result depends on the live reserve parameters, prices, collateral mix and debt balance.
Why maximum borrowing is not a target
Borrowing up to the displayed maximum leaves little capacity for a falling collateral price or an increasing debt balance. Aave does not define one universal “safe” health factor because acceptable risk depends on the assets, chain, market conditions and your ability to add collateral or repay. Set a personal floor above 1 and choose debt that remains above that floor after a stress scenario, rather than aiming at the protocol’s limit.

A step-by-step collateral selection process
- Name the exact market and chain. Record the Aave deployment, network, collateral asset and debt asset. The same token can have different parameters, caps, liquidity and mode eligibility elsewhere.
- Confirm collateral status. In the reserve details, verify that collateral use is enabled and note whether LTV is greater than zero. If the reserve is not enabled or has 0% LTV, it cannot support your intended loan.
- Write down all live reserve settings. Capture LTV, liquidation threshold, liquidation bonus, supply cap, borrow cap, current supplied and borrowed amounts, and available unborrowed liquidity. These values are the baseline for a comparison.
- Estimate the intended health factor. Use the displayed collateral and debt values with the weighted liquidation threshold. Recalculate for a larger debt balance and a lower collateral price; include likely interest accrual over the period you expect to hold the loan.
- Check withdrawal and borrowing capacity. Aave withdrawals depend on unborrowed liquidity in the reserve. Supply and borrow caps can also prevent additional deposits or loans even when your account’s health factor looks adequate. See the LiquidityPool documentation for the relationship between liquidity, utilization and borrowing.
- Assess the external market. Look at trading depth and likely slippage for the collateral in the venues and time windows relevant to you. Aave identifies fluctuating collateral liquidity as a risk; depth for a particular token and market must be checked separately and is not established by the protocol’s generic documentation.
- Compare price behavior. Examine how the collateral has moved, and could move, against the asset you will borrow. A pair that usually tracks may still diverge during a shock, depeg or market-specific event.
- Review oracle and network dependencies. Identify the price-feed arrangement, possible oracle failure or compromise, chain congestion, and any bridge or cross-network dependency. These are separate failure modes from ordinary market volatility.
- Check special-mode rules. Determine whether both assets qualify for an E-Mode category or whether the collateral is in Isolation Mode. Apply the mode’s debt-asset and ceiling restrictions before calculating how much you can borrow.
- Choose a buffer and monitoring plan. Decide in advance what health-factor level triggers repayment, extra collateral or a reduction in debt. Ensure you can act quickly on the relevant chain and keep funds available for that response.
Liquidity has two different meanings
Reserve liquidity inside Aave
When you withdraw supplied collateral or borrow an asset, the reserve must have enough unborrowed liquidity. High utilization can reduce what is immediately withdrawable and can change borrowing rates. Supply and borrow caps impose additional protocol limits. A reserve can therefore be acceptable from a collateral-ratio perspective while still being inconvenient to exit or expand.
Check the reserve’s available liquidity and utilization at the time of the transaction and continue monitoring them while the loan is open. The Aave LiquidityPool reference describes how supplied liquidity and utilization affect borrowing and withdrawals.
Market liquidity during a sale
Liquidation converts collateral into debt repayment. If the asset’s external market is shallow, a sale can move its price and produce more slippage than its headline price suggests. Thin liquidity can also make it harder for you to repay or rebalance voluntarily. Aave’s risk documentation lists collateral-liquidity fluctuations as a risk category, but it does not provide a universal depth or slippage statistic for every token. Obtain a dated, asset-specific depth estimate before relying on a small-cap or lightly traded collateral.
Volatility and correlation: model the pair, not just the token
Collateral risk is relative to the debt. If collateral falls while debt stays stable, the health factor declines. If the debt asset appreciates against the collateral, the debt’s value rises in the same calculation. Borrowing rates can also change as pool utilization changes, increasing the debt balance over time.
Correlation can help when collateral and debt historically move together, but it is not a guarantee. Stable-value assets can depeg; supposedly related assets can diverge; and a network or oracle event can affect one side first. Aave’s guidance identifies asset volatility and correlation as factors in collateral risk without defining a universally safe threshold. Use several adverse scenarios rather than one historical average:
- Collateral drops while the debt asset is unchanged.
- Collateral is unchanged while the debt asset rises.
- Both move, but collateral underperforms the debt asset.
- Borrowing interest accrues during a prolonged period.
- A liquidity shock widens the sale price or delays an exit.
Use an observation window and data source that you can name and date. The official material provides no market-wide volatility or liquidity statistic that can be applied to every Aave reserve.
Oracle, chain and bridge risks
Aave relies on price information to value collateral and debt. An oracle failure, manipulation or compromise can produce an incorrect valuation even when spot markets appear normal. Network congestion can delay a deposit, repayment or collateral top-up. If an asset depends on a bridge, a bridge outage or failure adds another layer of exposure. Aave groups valuation/oracle and network/bridge issues among its protocol risks; read the categories in the Aave risks documentation.

For each candidate, document which chain you will use, whether the asset is native or bridged, how its price is supplied, and what you would do if transactions are delayed. Do not assume that a familiar ticker has identical oracle or bridge exposure on every deployment.
E-Mode and Isolation Mode change the rules
E-Mode
Efficiency Mode groups eligible correlated assets. When both collateral and debt qualify, E-Mode can provide higher LTV or more efficient borrowing than the standard configuration. The benefit is conditional on category membership and correlation assumptions; it does not remove liquidation risk. Verify that each asset is eligible in the category for the specific market you are using.
Isolation Mode
Isolation Mode designates certain collateral as higher risk and restricts what can be borrowed against it. Borrowable assets may be limited and a debt ceiling applies. A position can be healthy while still being unable to borrow the asset or amount you expected. Confirm the permitted debt assets and remaining ceiling before supplying isolated collateral.
Aave’s V3 overview explains E-Mode and Isolation Mode, while the Pool contract documentation covers collateral toggling and liquidation calls.
Compare candidates in one market
Put every candidate through the same checklist. This avoids selecting an asset solely because its headline LTV is high.

Calculate the health factor using the planned collateral and debt, then repeat the calculation after a material collateral decline, a debt-asset appreciation and several periods of interest accrual. The buffer should reflect how quickly you can supply more collateral or repay on that chain, the liquidity of your collateral, and your tolerance for forced selling.

Write explicit triggers before opening the position. For example, a trigger can require partial repayment when the health factor reaches your chosen floor, or require additional collateral when reserve liquidity or market depth deteriorates. The exact floor is a personal risk limit; Aave does not publish one universal safe value.
How to improve a deteriorating health factor
Common responses are adding eligible collateral, repaying part of the debt, or reducing exposure before the account reaches 1. Confirm that the reserve still has capacity and that your transaction can be executed under current network conditions. Aave’s liquidation help page also points readers to DeFi Simulator for modeling health-factor changes and DeFi Saver for automated repayment. These are third-party tools listed by Aave, not Aave protocol features or endorsements; availability and terms can change.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat happens when liquidation becomes possible
Once the health factor is below 1, the account is eligible for liquidation. A liquidator repays debt and receives collateral plus the reserve’s liquidation bonus. The threshold and bonus are configured per reserve, so the amount of collateral lost depends on the exact market and asset. Liquidation eligibility is not the same thing as an LTV target: LTV governs the borrowing limit, while the liquidation threshold participates in the health-factor calculation.
Because liquidation is triggered by changing values, waiting for a warning after the threshold is crossed can leave fewer options. Keep a repayment or collateral-addition path ready, and do not assume that reserve liquidity, external market depth or network fees will remain unchanged during a broad sell-off.
Monitoring checklist after you borrow
- Check the account health factor and collateral/debt valuations on a schedule appropriate to the assets’ volatility.
- Watch interest-rate changes and the debt balance, not only the collateral price.
- Recheck reserve utilization, available unborrowed liquidity and caps before adding or withdrawing funds.
- Review governance announcements for parameter changes affecting LTV, liquidation threshold, bonus, caps or mode rules.
- Track oracle, chain and bridge incidents that could delay transactions or alter valuations.
- Recalculate relative performance if either the collateral or debt asset undergoes a depeg, upgrade or market-structure change.
Governance can change reserve configuration, and each supported market may have different settings. Treat your recorded parameters as time-stamped information, not permanent protocol guarantees.
Common selection mistakes
Choosing the highest LTV
A high LTV increases capital efficiency but reduces room for a price move. Compare the resulting health-factor path and liquidation cost instead of ranking assets by LTV alone.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Confusing LTV with the liquidation threshold
These controls serve different purposes. LTV sets the borrowing limit; the liquidation threshold helps determine liquidation eligibility. Using the threshold as a borrowing target can create an unnecessarily fragile position.
Best Value
Ignoring caps and reserve liquidity
A healthy account can still be unable to borrow more, withdraw immediately or add collateral if caps or unborrowed liquidity constrain the reserve.
Assuming correlation is permanent
Correlation can fail during depegs, market stress or asset-specific events. Stress the relative pair, not just each asset in isolation.
Using stale parameters
Values from another chain, market or date may be wrong for your transaction. Read the live reserve and account data immediately before borrowing and continue checking it afterward.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Treating a third-party automation tool as protocol protection
Automation can fail because of permissions, liquidity, gas costs or network outages. It should supplement—not replace—a health-factor buffer and a manual recovery plan.
Bottom line
The best Aave collateral is the asset that leaves adequate, tested health-factor headroom after you account for reserve rules, liquidity, relative volatility, interest accrual, oracle and network exposure, and mode restrictions in the exact market you will use. There is no universal safest token. Compare candidates with current reserve data, borrow below the maximum, and keep a practical way to repay or add collateral before the health factor approaches 1.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can an asset with a 0% LTV support an Aave loan?
No. A reserve with 0% LTV cannot be enabled as collateral for borrowing, even if the asset can be supplied.
Does E-Mode eliminate liquidation risk?
No. E-Mode can improve capital efficiency for eligible correlated assets, but a health factor below 1 remains liquidation-eligible and correlation can break down.
