How to Choose Checkout Monitoring Tools for an Ecommerce Site

Choose checkout monitoring by matching each check to the failure it can detect: endpoint and API checks reveal service problems, while browser-based synthetic journeys test whether shoppers can move through checkout. For a fuller picture, pair those tests with real-user monitoring and application diagnostics, which help show what customers experienced and why a failure occurred.

What checkout monitoring can—and cannot—prove

A successful HTTP response does not prove a shopper can complete checkout. A basic ping can show that an endpoint responds, but it cannot confirm that the page rendered correctly, that the cart advanced, or that a payment step worked. New Relic sums up the distinction in its monitor-type documentation: “It detects outages, not broken functionality, so treat it as your first signal rather than proof the app works.”

Browser-based synthetic monitoring runs a designed user journey, often in a real browser, and can check page content and interactions across multiple steps. New Relic describes a scripted browser monitor as validating a path “from browser to data layer,” with checkout among its examples. But a synthetic check is still test traffic following a script; it does not represent every shopper, device, browser, or payment outcome.

That distinction suggests a layered approach: use endpoints and APIs for broad service availability, browser journeys for critical user-facing flows, and real-user and application data to understand actual customer impact.

Compare tools on the dimensions that affect checkout

What to compare Questions to ask Why it matters
Journey depth Does it support endpoint checks, API checks, simple browser checks, or scripted multi-step journeys? Pings detect availability; a browser journey can test whether checkout progresses.
Browser realism Does a check execute page JavaScript and load assets, or only request a URL? Rendered behavior and interaction failures can be invisible to a URL-only check.
Payment and dependencies Can it validate a payment-related action safely and monitor external APIs? Checkout depends on both merchant services and third parties; a broken dependency may block completion.
Location and private access Can checks run near important customer regions and reach private or allow-listed systems? Network paths, regional behavior, and access restrictions can affect what the check sees.
Alert behavior What counts as failure? How do retries, check frequency, evaluation windows, and location scope affect alerts? Those settings determine how quickly an alert fires and whether transient or localized problems are detected.
Diagnostic evidence Are screenshots, network timings, traces, logs, replay, or error context available? Evidence can help distinguish a failed test from its likely cause.
Operating effort How much scripting and ongoing maintenance will the team own? What telemetry integrations are needed? Browser journeys can be slower and more resource-intensive than lighter checks, and UI changes can require test updates.
Cost and fit How do monitor count, test frequency, retention, and telemetry volume affect the bill? Comparable current pricing was not established; get current quotes and forecast usage for the configuration you plan to run.

Build a useful monitoring plan

  1. Map the journey and its dependencies. Trace the path from cart through confirmation. Note the APIs and third-party payment services each step depends on. Keep sensitive data and live payment effects out of a test unless your merchant and payment provider have explicitly designed a safe production-check flow.
  2. Cover availability with endpoint and API checks. Start with the key services and dependencies to get an early signal when something stops responding. Treat these checks as an availability layer, not proof that the customer-facing checkout works.
  3. Add a small browser journey for critical steps. Test the revenue-critical path rather than scripting every possible route. Assert meaningful expected content and successful progression between steps. Account for the greater resource use and maintenance of browser checks.
  4. Choose locations that reflect your infrastructure and audience. Check whether the service supports relevant public locations and whether private or allow-listed environments are reachable. New Relic and Datadog document public and private-location options; confirm current availability and access requirements for your own account.
  5. Connect test results to customer and application evidence. Use real-user monitoring, application errors, and traces alongside synthetic checks. That combination helps you determine whether real shoppers were affected and investigate where a failure occurred.
  6. Verify alert and recovery rules. Confirm failure thresholds, evaluation windows, retries, location scope, and recovery behavior in current product documentation. A notification mute may not stop a check or change how uptime is calculated, so verify what the specific product does.
  7. Trial the shortlist on your stack. Validate the journey, integrations, privacy and security controls, retention, regional availability, and expected usage before committing. Feature packaging and prices can vary by plan and change over time.

New Relic Synthetics

New Relic documentation describes scheduled public and private checks ranging from pings to scripted API and browser journeys. Its guidance says scripted browser monitors can validate checkout, while warning that they are slower and more resource-intensive. The documentation also describes three checks before a monitor enters a failed state and 13 months of stored monitor runs; those are New Relic-specific details, not industry-wide defaults. See its monitor-type guide and synthetics documentation for current product details.

Datadog Synthetic Monitoring and Journey Monitoring

Datadog describes browser and API tests, simulated user flows, locations, screenshots, and integrations with APM and RUM. Its journey guidance specifically recommends monitoring the payment action in an ecommerce checkout because a failed payment prevents completion. That guidance does not establish a universally safe way to run a payment check against a live account. Review the Synthetic Monitoring documentation and browser-test guidance for current behavior and configuration.

Sentry as a diagnostic complement

Sentry’s ecommerce materials describe error tracking, third-party payment-script issues, session replay, and tracing as tools for investigating application problems. That makes it a possible complement for diagnosis; the cited materials do not establish it as a direct substitute for synthetic checkout monitoring. See Sentry for ecommerce.

  • Run a trial against the actual checkout stack, including the payment integration and any private-network access the check needs.
  • Confirm whether the selected plan includes the required monitor types, locations, integrations, retention, privacy controls, and security options.
  • Estimate costs from the monitor count and frequency you intend to use, plus any associated telemetry volume. Obtain current pricing from the vendor; no comparable current prices or independent performance benchmarks are established here.
  • Decide who owns script updates, alert tuning, and investigation when an alert fires.
