How to Choose Canon RF Lenses for the EOS R6 II

For a first general-purpose lens on the Canon EOS R6 Mark II, compare Canon’s two RF 24–105mm kit options: the compact, variable-aperture RF 24-105mm F4-7.1 IS STM and the constant-f/4 RF 24-105mm F4 L IS USM. Choose the STM if portability and everyday flexibility matter most; choose the L lens if you need f/4 available throughout the zoom range. If you already own EF or EF-S lenses, an EF-EOS R adapter may let you keep using compatible lenses instead of replacing them immediately.

Start with what you photograph

Lens choice depends less on the camera body than on the subjects and conditions you shoot. A travel or family photographer may value a manageable everyday zoom; an event photographer may put more weight on aperture in dim rooms; a wildlife or macro photographer may need a particular reach or close-focus capability. The EOS R6 Mark II announcement identifies both RF 24–105mm lenses as kit options, making them sensible starting points for a general-purpose setup, not universal answers for every specialty. Canon’s announcement describes the camera as a full-frame hybrid model intended for a wide range of photography and video needs.

  • Everyday, travel, and family: Begin with the RF 24-105mm F4-7.1 IS STM if a lightweight, compact standard zoom is the priority.
  • Events or changing light: Compare the RF 24-105mm F4 L IS USM if having a constant maximum aperture matters as you zoom.
  • Existing EF or EF-S collection: Check the exact lens and adapter compatibility before buying a replacement.
  • Specialist work: Choose around the focal length, aperture, and focusing needs of the subject rather than assuming a standard zoom will be sufficient.

In its 2022 announcement, Canon U.S.A. quoted Kazuto Ogawa, then Senior Vice President and General Manager of its Imaging Technologies & Communications Group: “The EOS R6 Mark II camera builds upon the strong performance of the EOS R6 camera, offering a variety of features designed to satisfy a wide range of needs for both amateur and professional photographers.” The broad intended audience is one reason the camera can be paired with different kinds of lenses; it does not mean one standard zoom is ideal for every photographer.

Compare the two RF 24–105mm options

Both lenses cover the same stated 24–105mm range, but their aperture behavior and positioning differ. Canon presents the STM version as a compact, lightweight, versatile lens with optical image stabilization and 0.5x Centre Focus Macro. Canon presents the L version as a professional-quality versatile zoom, with a constant f/4 maximum aperture, Nano USM focusing, and five-stop optical image stabilization. Those stabilization figures are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results.

Lens Maximum aperture Stabilization and close focus What it may suit
RF 24-105mm F4-7.1 IS STM Variable f/4–7.1 across the zoom range Canon specifies optical IS and 0.5x Centre Focus Macro. Everyday, travel, and family use where a compact, versatile zoom is attractive.
RF 24-105mm F4 L IS USM Constant f/4 across the zoom range Canon specifies five-stop optical IS and Nano USM focusing. Work where maintaining f/4 while zooming is useful, including some event and indoor situations.

These specifications come from Canon’s product descriptions for the RF 24-105mm F4-7.1 IS STM and RF 24-105mm F4L IS USM in the Canon Europe Store’s UAE catalogue. Availability, naming, and pricing can vary by market; check the listing for your region before purchase.

What the aperture difference changes

The STM lens’s maximum aperture becomes smaller as you zoom toward the long end: it ranges from f/4 to f/7.1. The L lens maintains a maximum aperture of f/4 throughout the range. That consistency can make exposure settings easier to maintain while changing focal length, and a wider available aperture can be useful when less light reaches the camera.

For moving people at an indoor event, aperture can matter because image stabilization does not freeze subject motion. Stabilization helps counter camera shake; it cannot stop a person from moving during the exposure. A constant f/4 is not a guarantee of a sharp action photo, but it offers a different low-light trade-off from a lens whose maximum aperture narrows as you zoom.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Think about how often you actually zoom while photographing. If you tend to stay at one end of the range, the changing maximum aperture may be less central to your decision than it is for someone who reframes frequently. If you move from a wider composition to a tighter one during an event, the L lens’s constant maximum aperture means the aperture limit itself does not narrow as you zoom. This is a specification-based distinction, not a claim that it will always produce a better photograph.

What stabilization does—and does not—tell you

Canon specifies optical stabilization on both lenses and lists five-stop optical IS for the L model. Separately, Canon’s 2022 EOS R6 Mark II announcement reports up to eight stops of in-body image stabilization, CIPA-standards compliant using the RF 24-105mm F4 L IS USM at 105mm. This is a manufacturer-reported figure under that stated condition, not a guarantee for every lens, focal length, or shooting situation. The announcement’s figure should not be added to the lens’s five-stop specification as though the results automatically stack.

Stabilization is most relevant when camera movement is the problem, such as when handholding a static scene. If the subject itself is moving, shutter speed and available light remain important. Consider both the kind of movement you photograph and whether you typically shoot handheld or with support.

For example, a stationary interior or a posed portrait may give stabilization an opportunity to help with camera shake, while a child running through a room creates a subject-motion challenge as well. The same lens feature therefore has different practical value depending on what is in front of the camera. Do not select a lens on the basis of a stabilization-stop number alone.

Close focus and portability

Canon’s STM description specifically calls out 0.5x Centre Focus Macro and describes the lens as lightweight and compact. Those details can make it appealing when you want a general zoom that also handles closer subjects, or when carrying a smaller everyday kit matters. The cited material does not establish a directly comparable close-focus figure for the L lens, nor a consistent head-to-head set of weights and dimensions; do not infer that the lenses are identical in those respects.

The 0.5x Centre Focus Macro description is a stated feature of the STM zoom, not a reason to assume it replaces every dedicated macro lens. If close-up photography is a major purpose, check the exact magnification and focusing specifications against the subjects and working distance you need. For occasional detail shots within a travel or family kit, the listed close-focus feature may be a useful extra.

Choose by shooting scenario

Travel, family, and everyday photographs

Start with the RF 24-105mm F4-7.1 IS STM if you want one lens for a range of ordinary scenes and put a premium on a compact, lightweight option. The 24–105mm range gives you room to frame a broader scene or a tighter view without changing lenses. Its f/4–7.1 aperture range is the compromise to consider: the maximum aperture narrows at longer focal lengths, which can be a disadvantage in dim conditions or when you need to control shutter speed.

Before buying, consider your actual habits. If you often photograph indoors without flash, use the long end of the zoom, or photograph active children, the aperture trade-off may matter more than portability. If most of your photographs are in good light and you value one-lens convenience, the STM lens is the more direct fit among these two options.

For travel, also consider how much equipment you want to carry and whether you usually change lenses in the field. Canon’s product description supports calling the STM model compact and lightweight, but the cited comparison does not establish a precise weight or size advantage over the L model. If bag space or weight will decide the purchase, look up the current regional specifications rather than relying on an unverified numerical comparison.

Events and indoor work

Compare the RF 24-105mm F4 L IS USM when the constant f/4 aperture is important. Unlike the STM zoom, it does not change its maximum aperture as you zoom. That predictability can help when framing changes quickly, although the evidence here does not establish that f/4 alone will be bright enough for every venue or subject. For fast movement or especially dim rooms, decide whether your exposure requirements call for a faster lens or other equipment beyond these two standard zooms.

It is useful to separate two questions: whether the camera can be held steady, and whether the subject can be recorded without motion blur. Optical and in-body stabilization address camera movement; a moving subject still calls for an appropriate shutter speed. A photographer covering a dim event with people in motion may need to weigh the L lens’s constant f/4 against needs that go beyond the evidence available for these two zooms. Do not treat “event lens” as a guarantee that either one suits every venue.

Portraits, wildlife, wide-angle, and macro work

A standard zoom can cover many situations, but a specialist lens may be a better match when the subject calls for a specific focal length, wider aperture, greater reach, or closer focusing. For portraits, consider the framing distance and background appearance you want; for wildlife, consider whether the focal length reaches the subject; for wide-angle work, check whether the lens reaches the field of view you need; and for macro, verify the exact close-focus and magnification specifications. The product details established here are not sufficient to rank specialist RF models as universal winners, so confirm the specifications of the exact lens before choosing it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Rather than buying a specialist lens simply because its category sounds suitable, identify the limitation you have encountered with your current setup. Is the subject too far away, are you unable to frame broadly enough, do you need closer focusing, or is the available aperture limiting your work? Then compare official specifications for lenses that address that particular need. This guide covers the two standard zooms and the adapter option, but it does not establish a model-by-model ranking for portrait, wildlife, wide-angle, or macro lenses.

What to verify before you buy

Use the official listing for the exact lens and your region to confirm the details that affect fit, cost, and everyday use. The product descriptions cited above establish key differences, but they do not provide a consistent basis here for a complete head-to-head comparison of dimensions, weight, weather sealing, filter size, or current price.

  • Current local price and availability: Check a current retailer or Canon listing for your market. The EOS R6 Mark II launch announcement dates to November 2, 2022; its launch pricing is historical, not a current quote.
  • Weight and dimensions: Compare the exact regional product specifications if travel weight or bag space is decisive.
  • Weather sealing and filter size: Verify these on the exact product page rather than assuming they are the same across the two lenses.
  • Close-focus requirements: Confirm the stated working distance or magnification for the specific close-up photographs you want to make.
  • Low-light needs: Think about whether the challenge is camera shake or subject movement; stabilization and aperture address different parts of the problem.

Price is a personal trade-off as well as a market variable. Compare current local prices for the complete setup you would actually use: a native lens on its own, or an adapter together with a lens you already own. No current price for either 24–105mm lens or for a particular regional kit is established in the cited material. Canon’s 2022 announcement included launch-era pricing, but that is historical and should not be presented as today’s cost.

Keep compatible EF and EF-S lenses with an adapter

If you own lenses from Canon’s EF or EF-S system, you may not need to replace the entire collection at once. Canon’s EOS R6 Mark II kit accessory catalogue lists the EF-EOS R mount adapter and describes it as enabling EF/EF-S lens compatibility with EOS R cameras. Check the exact lens and adapter requirements before purchase; compatibility should be confirmed for your specific combination rather than assumed from the mount family alone. Canon’s R6 Mark II accessories listing is a starting point for the adapter option.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compare the practical cost and convenience of adapting lenses you already own with moving to native RF lenses. An adapter adds another item to carry and does not change what focal length or maximum aperture the lens provides. If you have several lenses, check each one individually; do not buy an adapter until you have confirmed that it is the correct accessory for your equipment.

This can be a staged decision rather than an all-at-once system change. You might keep using a compatible EF or EF-S lens while deciding which native RF lens, if any, best fills a gap in your kit. Compare the cost of the adapter and any new lens with the convenience of using what you already own. No current price comparison is established here, so use listings for your market and date rather than assuming adaptation is always cheaper.

A straightforward decision process

  1. Write down your main subjects. Separate everyday, travel, and family use from indoor events, fast action, close-ups, and wildlife. If you have several uses, rank them instead of trying to optimize for every possible photograph.
  2. Decide how much the aperture matters. If you want a constant maximum aperture while zooming, compare the L lens’s f/4. If portability is more important and you can accept the STM lens’s variable f/4–7.1 aperture, consider the STM.
  3. Evaluate stabilization against your subject. For static scenes, stabilization may help with camera shake. For moving subjects, consider whether shutter speed and light are likely to be limiting.
  4. Check close-focus and carrying needs. The STM listing specifies 0.5x Centre Focus Macro and describes a compact, lightweight design. Verify weight, dimensions, and close-focus details for any alternative you are considering.
  5. Account for lenses you already own. If you use EF or EF-S lenses, verify exact adapter compatibility and compare the cost and convenience of adapting them with purchasing native RF glass.
  6. Confirm local specifications and price. Before ordering, check the exact product page or seller listing for your region, including current availability and any details important to your setup.

As a final check, ask whether the lens’s limitation is one you will encounter often. If you mostly shoot in good light and value a compact everyday range, the STM’s variable aperture may be an acceptable compromise. If you frequently need to maintain f/4 while zooming, the L model addresses that specific requirement. If neither description fits because your main subject needs greater reach, a wider field of view, or more specialized close focus, continue comparing specialist lenses instead of forcing the standard-zoom choice.

Common selection mistakes

  • Choosing only by zoom range: Two lenses can share 24–105mm coverage but differ in aperture, focus drive, and stated close-focus features.
  • Treating stabilization as a solution to subject motion: Optical or in-body stabilization helps with camera movement; it does not freeze people or animals.
  • Assuming f/4 means the same exposure at every setting on both lenses: The L lens maintains f/4 across the range, while the STM lens’s maximum aperture varies up to f/7.1.
  • Using old launch prices as current prices: The Canon announcement was published in 2022, and prices and stock change by market and date.
  • Buying an adapter without checking the lens: Confirm the exact EF or EF-S lens and adapter combination before relying on continued use.
  • Assuming a product description is a head-to-head test: Canon’s published specifications explain selected features, but the information cited here does not establish independent image-quality results or complete comparative testing.
  • Overlooking the regional listing: Product names, availability, and pricing can vary by market. Confirm the exact version sold where you plan to buy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are both RF 24–105mm lenses compatible starting points for the EOS R6 Mark II?

Canon’s R6 Mark II kit announcement identifies both the RF 24-105mm F4-7.1 IS STM and RF 24-105mm F4 L IS USM as kit options. They are well-supported general-purpose starting points, though a specialist lens may better suit a specific subject.

Is the RF 24-105mm F4 L IS USM better for indoor events?

It may suit you if you value a constant f/4 maximum aperture while zooming. That does not guarantee f/4 is sufficient for every venue or moving subject. Stabilization helps with camera shake, not subject motion, so consider shutter speed and available light too.

Does the EOS R6 Mark II’s eight-stop stabilization figure mean I get 13 stops with the L lens?

No. Canon’s announcement reports up to eight stops of in-body stabilization under a stated CIPA condition using the RF 24-105mm F4 L IS USM at 105mm, while Canon separately lists five-stop optical IS for the lens. The announcement does not support adding those figures together as a guaranteed result.

Can I use my EF or EF-S lenses on the R6 Mark II?

Canon’s R6 Mark II accessory catalogue lists the EF-EOS R mount adapter and describes it as enabling EF/EF-S lens compatibility with EOS R cameras. Confirm the exact lens and adapter combination before purchasing or relying on it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will the same RF lens work on both an EOS R7 and an EOS R6 Mark II?

A Canon Community discussion includes this exact compatibility question and offers forum guidance, but it is not the official camera manual. Confirm the precise lens and camera combination using Canon’s official compatibility information before buying. Do not assume the framing will be identical across different camera formats.

What are the current prices of the two lenses?

No current prices for the two lenses are established here. Canon’s R6 Mark II announcement is dated November 2, 2022, so any launch-era prices are historical. Check current listings in your market before comparing total cost.

What should I check if I am considering a portrait, wildlife, wide-angle, or macro lens instead?

Start with the need the standard zoom does not meet: focal length, aperture, reach, or close focusing. Then verify the exact specialist lens’s official specifications and compatibility. The information here does not establish a universal winner for those categories.

The Bottom Line

For a straightforward everyday setup, begin by comparing the two Canon-listed RF 24–105mm kit zooms. Choose the RF 24-105mm F4-7.1 IS STM when its compact, lightweight positioning and close-focus feature suit your priorities; choose the RF 24-105mm F4 L IS USM when constant f/4 and its specified Nano USM focusing matter more. If you already own EF or EF-S lenses, check the EF-EOS R adapter and your exact lens before replacing anything. Confirm current local prices and specifications before you buy.
