Choose Bose headphones by starting with where you listen and whether you want isolation or awareness: over-ear QuietComfort models suit focus and travel, sealed earbuds offer a compact fit, and Ultra Open Earbuds keep your ear canals unobstructed. Then check comfort, features, battery life in your preferred mode, and the exact model generation.
Start with fit and your surroundings
Bose frames the choice around over-ear, in-ear, and open-ear designs. The main tradeoff is how much the headphones separate you from the world around you.

Over-ear: coverage and isolation
Over-ear headphones cover the ears. Bose says their physical coverage provides natural noise reduction that combines with active noise cancellation (ANC) for stronger isolation. This makes them a sensible starting point for flights, commuting, or concentrated work when immersion matters. They also avoid putting eartips in the ear canal.

In-ear earbuds are pocketable and reduce external sound by forming a seal in the ear canal. Their comfort and stability depend on finding a suitable eartip, so this design is not a universal fit. Bose says its QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds include multiple tip and stability-band sizes.

- COMFORTABLE HEADPHONES: Plush over-ear cushions softly hug your ears, while a secure and comfortable padded band gently keeps your studio headphones in place for those extra-long listening sessions
- 2 LISTENING MODES: These wireless Bluetooth headphones feature Quiet and Aware Modes that let you toggle between full noise cancelling or full awareness of your surroundings for seamless sound control
- HIGH-FIDELITY AUDIO/EQ CONTROL: Supercharge your favorite tracks with high-fidelity audio and Adjustable EQ that puts you in control of the bass, mid-range, and treble for unmatched bold sound
- ALL DAY BATTERY LIFE: Bose QuietComfort wireless headphones provide up to 24 hours of battery on a single charge, plus a 15-minute charge via USB-C gives you up to 2.5 hours of additional play time
Open-ear: more connection to ambient sound
Open-ear products sit outside the ear canal, leaving it unobstructed and allowing airflow. They suit listeners who want to remain more connected to their surroundings, but they do not provide the same isolation as sealed earbuds or over-ear ANC headphones. At high volume, open-ear designs may also leak sound.
There is no universal comfort winner: consider whether you prefer ear coverage, a seal, or an unobstructed ear canal, and whether isolation or awareness matters more in the places you listen. Bose’s product-fit guide explains the design choices.

Match the design to your routine
| Listening habit | What to consider | Tradeoff or check |
|---|---|---|
| Flights, commuting, or focused work | Start with an over-ear QuietComfort model if cushioned coverage and isolation are priorities. Bose lists the QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) as a premium over-ear option with Quiet, Aware, Immersion, and Cinema modes, ActiveSense, Bluetooth multipoint, and up to 30 hours of battery life. | Compare battery claims for the mode you expect to use; Bose’s mode-specific figures are described below. |
| Long days in changing environments | Look for Quiet and Aware modes so you can switch between greater isolation and hearing ambient sound. Bose describes Aware Mode as letting ambient sound back in. | Maximum isolation is not always the most useful setting when you want to stay aware. |
| Watching video | The QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) add Cinema Mode. Bose describes it as spatialized audio for video, with clearer dialogue and layered sound across video content. | This is Bose’s description of the feature, not an independent assessment. |
| Pocketable listening with external-sound reduction | Consider Bose in-ear earbuds if you want a compact, sealed design. | The ear-canal seal and eartip fit may not suit everyone. |
| Walking while staying aware | Consider Bose Ultra Open Earbuds. Bose lists up to seven hours of playback, or up to four hours with Immersive Audio or Auto Volume, plus a charging case. | These are Bose’s stated figures for the specified listening modes; open-ear listening offers less isolation than sealed or over-ear designs. |
| Moving between a computer and phone | Bose lists multipoint on the QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) and describes it for Ultra Open Earbuds. | Check the exact model’s specifications if multipoint is essential to your setup. |
Compare battery life in the mode you will use
“Up to” battery life is not a single expectation across every feature setting. For the QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen), Bose’s September 10, 2025 announcement gives up to 30 hours, 23 hours with Immersive Audio on, and 45 hours with ANC turned off. These are manufacturer figures, not independent measurements. Choose the number that corresponds to how you expect to listen, rather than comparing only the maximum.

Check the generation before you buy
Bose announced the second-generation QuietComfort Ultra Headphones on September 10, 2025. Bose says this generation adds lossless digital audio over USB-C, Cinema Mode, an updated ActiveSense algorithm, improved on-head detection, and the ability to charge during use. Because listings may use similar QuietComfort Ultra names, confirm “2nd Gen” in the listing title and check the specifications for the features you want.
Bose announced a $449 retail price and October 2, 2025 availability at launch. That is historical launch information, not a current price quote; check the retailer’s current listing before making a price comparison. The Bose announcement provides its launch details.
